Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    What car is it?
You already have a thread in Motors, so you can use either to answer..

The reason I'm asking is that wing mirrors sometimes are easy to install yourself with just a screwdriver.
Secondly, any mechanic in town will be able to do it for you. Have a read of this thread and choose the mechanic closest to you.

So I've purchased a mirror which needs to be replaced and now it needs to be installed.

Anyone recommend any competitive Garages that they know of for installing stuff? City or Oranmore (Sorry Mods, mentionned Oranmore here as didn't want to multi-Thread in County Forum.) area. Would like to get it done in the next couple of days if at all possible, :/ (even though I know there's loads of other cars besides mine but I'd like to get it done soon if I can at all.)

tried to send a pm but you're over your quota. try Brendan Dowling in Shantalla http://www.mechanicingalway.com/ very sound fella, very reasonable rates

Any mechanic will be able to install the mirror, and plenty of non mechanics too as it's a relatively easy job. Should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

    Hey there,
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about Dave Madden...he's a mechanic in Wooduay in Galway. I got a recommendation from a friend but got messed around the last time I got one so just wondering if anyone knows anything about him...It's just for a basic car service. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

I don't know him, but any mech can do a basic car service (engine oil, oil filter and air filter).
Farrell's Garage on Brendans Ave are good, get a quote from them.

About a year ago I lived not too far away from him and mailed/tried ringing, and even called to his workshop a few times.
No responses and never anyone at shop.
Is he even in business since these last few years?

He is, but you won't catch him every day. He can be quite difficult to contact. You pretty much have to go by and get him while he's there.

He's around a bit more often in the last few months, I think.

    Hi all,

I know probably this question has been asked before , but since i did not find any recent post I thought I'd give it a try.

I am in a search for a good/honest mechanic in Galway city.

My front left suspension spring has broken and the car is tilting to left.

Any input on this is appreciated.

    Thanks :)

I use Ballybrit exhaust and tyre centre a few times for tyres and wheel alignment. Always been very honest and reasonable. Where about in the city are you roughly?

I recommend getting the springs on both sides done together. Also check it didn't damage the inside wall of the tyre.

    I live near NUIG.

Anybody got an idea/estimation about the cost ?

Advance Pit stop ,Sasha Auto on tuam rd,

He asked for a good/honest place, and you've recommended the exact opposite?!

Most people on here wouldn't trust advance with a wheelbarrow. As for sasha : http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0207/312023-nct/

Thanks, i would not go to Sasha's/Advance anyway. Tried that.
Did not know this details though. Interesting.

So let me rephrase the question.

    Any mechanic besides Sashas/Advance ?

Does it have to be in the city ?

Mechanic i use is halfway between tuam and galway and is very good, if you want his number pm me

However as has been said it's a fairly small job really

I'd be assuming its so he can walk off and actually do stuff in galway rather than being 'stranded' while waiting for the car.

Was thinking the same myself though, mechanic I've used a few times not far outside galway on the tuam road.

Kilduff's Garage is around the corner from NUIG in Nun's Island. Farrell's garage out past the diving tower beside the golf course. Loads of little garages on the Moycullen road would be handy for NUIG too.

There is a member on here called Row who is a mechanic and based in Galway, not sure whereabouts in Galway he is but might be worth dropping him a private message.

Just got some work done by 'rescu u' on the headford road. Can't speak highly enough of them now. €240 for some work that the Volvo Main Dealer quoted €500-700 for.

Does anybody please have their phone number? It's a new garage and I cannot find the flyer they left weeks ago.
I cannot find it on the Golden Pages or in Google in general.

    Thanks.

Can't find a recent thread so hope its ok to start a new one. Anyway looking for recommendations on Mechanics around the city area that can fix my boot as it no longer opens via the Key fob. Car is a VW Golf and I can still open manually so reckon its an electronic fault.

I contacted the main dealers but they want €90 just to 'diagnose' the issue so can't imagine how much more they'll then charge to fix!!

Where are you based? I have VCDS and could do a scan for you, however if you go to a dealer they will insist on doing their own scan also therefore i'm not sure if my offer will be all that helpful

Is it just the pads or discs as well? Most mechanics won't like someone supplying the parts as they make margin from supplying the parts themselves. Brakes are a simple enough job that plenty of DIYers can do so any mechanic will be able to do this easily and quickly.

Hi all thinking of buying a car but want it to get checked by a mechanic in the next day or so
    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

When/where will you look at the car? There plenty of mechs in the city and you can probably (with owner consent) drive it straight to a close garage for inspection.

Hi, some piece of plastic is broken off behind my front bumper and dragging against the wheel.

Stupi annoying problem - anyone know someone who can fix something like this please PM me with address or google maps link?

    Ford Mondeo 1.8 petrol`2005

Need 4 new tyres and a full service
Where would best place to go i around town
Also in around how much would people reckon ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

For tyres, start with Francis in Clonboo.
Full service, any garage can do that - look for deals in local paper or consider DIY.

Piece of plastic, duct tape it for now and google "auto body repairs galway".

The Engine Management light is on in my 2005 Ford Focus and it's jerking when accelerating. Wonder if anyone can recommend me someone decent to have a look at it... trying to stay away from the Ford garage and hopefully save a few bob!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

You need car fault codes read using a special tool.
Most indies can do that so check with local mechs if you know any, otherwise scan this thread for some suggestions close to you.
Once you have the code it will tell you what is wrong and you can get a quote from a few locals on fixes.
