Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So what you won't be able to walk into the station and stuff without a ticket ?

You won't be able to board the train or leave the train when it arrives without a ticket.

Like in Heuston and Connolly you wont get from the main concourse where the booking office shop and toilets are without passing through a ticket barrier for which you will need a valid ticket.

But why ? What is the point of that ? I enjoyed going for a walk around the station at times. Are they trying to stop people from going near the station ?

Only those with tickets will be allowed to enter onto the platforms and Queuing area, this will cut down on those without tickets stealing from IE by travelling free.

you'll still be able to walk the length of platform 4, down to the other entrance door at the tunnel end of the platform. like this!

this is opposite the other entrance by the tunnel end of platform 4, presumably to allow for a swift exit from the station.

the new conduits I was talking about - looks like they come in the roof, drop down the wall by the ticket machines near platform 1 and head towards the new works on 4.

Are there not ticket barrier machines going in on the ticket office side of the current platform doors? Those gaps in the new barriers are for glass gates operated by code as seen in Heuston and Connolly and Pearse to allow for staff access.

No the only barrier before was the one that ran the length of the platform in the main train shed. There are gates that were always open to platforms 1&2 and a sign that said something along the lines of no access beyond this point without permission. And someone would be there nearer to the time of train departures.

What I'm thinking will be is that barrier has been replaced with a lower glass and steel barrier same as Heuston and Connolly and the gates will be replaced with glass gates operated electrically using a keypad like the gates here

Then I expect a bank of ticket machines to be placed inside the station in front of the doors to the platforms where the trunking and blue plastic barrier in the picture posted above in post #56 is.

I think you're right about that. it makes sense with the layout - only one new entrance to 4 and 5, both through a new ticket barrier thing.

Unfortunately it will mean no access for enthusiasts/spotters/photographers onto platforms unless they purchase a ticket or have a free travel pass.

I'm wondering how do these work with people going on railtours.

Do groups like IRRS/RPSI provide IE style tickets which let you go through the barriers or must you try get somebody to let you through.

I'll find out in July anyway on the IRRS Railtour to Cork.

Well considering all the posters in stations showing "no ticket no travel" I'd assume that every passenger must have a valid ticket.

There is normally somebody from the RPSI at the barrier to allow persons with valid tickets for that train through.

The new ticket barriers will be going in a slanted line just past the TMV's to allow a queuing system at the ticket office.

not what I expected at all:

looks like a grand bottleneck. Should mean a large increase in revenue from Cobh/Midleton though.

It's Ireland always catching up on the rest of the world..

I think you're confusing local authorities with 'Ireland'

    ...

Those barriers look a bit excessively complicated as a layout. Shame they kind of spoil the look of the concourse a bit by cluttering it up.

In addition to the new entrance by CIÉ/IÉ, it seems the council are proposing alterations to the Lower Glanmire Road.

What is that carbuncle between the train shed and the goods store?

Looks like something that fell off a passing aircraft.

    The proposed entrance building.

The Council have granted permission for the new entrance.

the ticket barriers are now live:

exit barriers now operational by Brian Clayton, on Flickr

It looks like they're still testing the system.
When I went through this evening they had two active to go to the platforms, and the others active to exit. The guy on duty didn't realise my smart card would work, so opened a gate specially for me :) I asked about the smart card and we tried it out, sure enough it works. Let's see how it goes in the morning with a bit of a crowd around.

Update: work has started in Kent in the past few weeks on the new south entrance however IR have fairly drastically changed the original plans from my post above to a much more slimmed down (presumably cheaper) option.

Originally the plan called for a 3,500 sqft mini concourse complete with lift, escalator, stairs, waiting area, TVMs, retail outlet and ticket barriers. The revised planning is for 2 small buildings totalling just 500 sqft with stairs, a lift and a single TVM.....and that's it. No ticket barriers. Instead the interior of the main station is going to be realigned.

There will be new ticket barriers at the top of the ramp on platform 5. And the ramp on platform 4, which is currently only accessible by going through the ticket barriers in the main concourse with a valid ticket, will now be outside the ticketing area.

Proper work on the new entrance looks set to begin in the next week or two. Right now a compound being built just south of the station. Piling work was done over the winter to prepare the site, but the site's been idle since.

Here's a report from the Evening Echo with a few nice photographs...
    http://www.eveningecho.ie/cork-news/work-on-new-look-kent-station-to-begin-in-july/

In other Kent Station news, the points for the turnout leading to the 'runaround' are to be replaced. There's a set of tracks and sleepers assembled off to the side, waiting to go in some night soon...

I think this refers to the collapse of a platform canopy in last year's tornado. As there were two island platforms on the Cobh / Midleton facing side of the station, I suspect that IR would be happy to lose one.
