Brewed my first BIAB Saturday night.ended up with 18 litres in my boiler with an o.g of 1.064 and it was supposed to be 1.05 so I probably should have diluted a bit

haha, I've uttered those words before. Got a stuck mash on my first brew of 2015, took about 3 hours altogether before I had the required volume to simply start the boil. Over 9kg's of grain for a 5 gallon batch. Never again.

You can still dilute if you want. Five litres of boiled, cooled water will give you your target gravity.
    (50/64=0.78125 ; 18/0.78125=23 ; 23-18=5L.)

There's a bit of a health warning as you'll be adding extra oxygen, but I've done this a few times and never noticed any problem in the finished beer.

Brewing up a chilli pale ale at the mo

    8lbs light lme
    .5lb crystal 30
    Chinook
    First gold
    Wilamette
And 3 or 4 Fresno chillies with 5 minutes to go

Planning to dry hop with perle hops and maybe add some rawitt chillies at some stage too depends on how it tastes

Went with a relatively simple looking American Pale Ale for my first brew:

    3kg Coppers LME
    227g Crystal malt 70

    14g Nugget (60 mins)
    14g Cascade (30 mins)
    28g Cascade (15 mins)

    White labs California yeast

    OG: 1.050

Have it fermenting now for 12 days and hope to bottle in next 3-5 days. Was thinking about secondary fermenting to dry hop but decided not to over complement it for my first time. Fingers crossed it's worked!

Back to the brewing this weekend.

We got a shiney new brew kettle, so looking forward to using that.

also moving from partial to full boil Extract, hoping to move to All Grain later in the summer.

First up is a Stout, simple recipe that we made on the half boil before, so trrying to replicate and better it in the full boil.

Then we're doing an IPA, again, we'd done it partial boil before, so trying to replicate or better it.

Both will be in the Homebrew Comp in March hopefully.

Bottled the mead yesterday, ran out of glass bottles so a 7up bottle was pressed into service. Forgot to taste the mead though, it's nearly 3 months in the fermenter so should be drinkable.

Edit: It's surprisingly tasty! Better than the last batch was at 6 months, in fact.

I need to start more mead.all my stash is nearly gone.tasty stuff

My first batch of Cooper's IPA is long gone. For my first ever batch with basic dextrose and the can of malt extract it tasted lovely and went down a treat.

I'm midway through my second batch which was Tom Caxton's Lager. Added in 500KG of light spraymalt and 1KG of brew enhancer, both of the Munton's variety.

Took a fair bit for the flavours to settle down (almost two months prior to bottling) but it is really delicious. Might be a bit too malty but is certainly going down a treat lately.

Have a Munton's Old Ale kit which includes 1KG of spraymalt in the bottle and has been conditioning for the last month or so. Will give it another month to see how it progresses.

I bought myself a Munton's APA Craft kit a little while ago so I'll be brewing that today.

You could have brewed 24L and split it, saving yourself the hassle of doing 2 mashes.

God dammit! Where were you 12 hours ago!

I should have as after spending only a slightly shorter amount of time doing the 12 batch I thought the same . On the upside doing a smaller volume biab in the peco was a lot handier.

The closing date for the competition is the 8th of February, the beers wouldn't be ready for the, and they won't take the responsibility for conditioning them before hand.

Racked and dry hopped my chilli pale ale this morning but I forgot to weigh the bag down.it tastes good so far but not spicy enough so I added a few more chillies to it

My Saison should be ready this weekend. This tasted great when i bottled it. Massive difference from the all grain compared to extract

    Of course yeah.

I'll be dropping the bottles this weekend.

Bought some grain of the Mottley Brew a few weekends ago. Haven't had a chance to brew with it yet. Got a veritable mixed bag of Floor malted Pilsner Malt, beechwood smoked malt, some caramunich and some chocolate. I guess it would make sense to make a smoked porter. Smoked malt smells nice but I only got enough to make 10% of the grain bill so any smokiness left will be minor enough I would say.

I uses 20% for a big smoky taste, but 10% will give noticeable "smoke" aroma and flavour.

By they way I have already have take the name "Smoke on the porter" ;)

By the way, I had a dream last night that I made a mead with german wheatbeer yeast. Think that could very well be my next 1 gallon batch

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,116 ✭✭✭✭RasTa

IPA season started back on the 4th of Feb. I'll be sniffing airlocks again soon.
    5.2kg Pale Malt
    226g Carapills
    140g Caramunich 2
    113g wheat

    Hops
    28g Magnum, 12g Apollo FWH

    14g Amarillo - 30mins

    Flameouts
    14g each
    Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial

20min hop stand and mini whirlpool, chill to 20c and whirlpool, leave for another 20mins

Yeast - San Diego Super Strain WLP090

    Dry hop
    20g each
    Centennial, Cascade, Amarillo

    151f mash

Supposed to be 1058 and 23L but ended up with 1053 and 20L as decided to leave about 2L behind that I would usually add from the cold break.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,782 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

Put this on last night, based on the Centennial Blonde recipe popular on the HomeBrewTalk forums - hoping to get something easy drinking with a light hoppiness

    1.3Kg Extra-light spraymalt
    260g Carapils steeped
    9g Centennial @ 50 mins
    9g Centennial @ 20 mins
    9g Cascade @ 10 mins
    9g Cascade @ 0 mins

first time I'd used a wort chiller, worked really well, interesting to see the cold break (previous couple of extracts I'd used ice which was messy and didn't bring the temp down sufficiently).

Ended up with about 12L in the fermenter with an OG of 1.044

I don't think its possible to get 9% abv from that recipe, would have said something closer to 6
