    Still down to the Capt. In most countries, the Pilots liability is is extremely limited anyway, irrespective of them being found at fault. Iirc, it's only a few hundred euro in Ireland, and similar in the UK

    Ro-Ro / cargo vessel Parida carrying radioactive concrete from Scotland to Belgium had a fire in her funnel and is currently adrift in the Moray Firth. The Beatrice platform was evacuated as a precaution. I know Aberdeen is only around the corner with plenty of tugs ready to go, but once again the lack of the proper CG towing vessels leaves the UK vulnerable.

    Hapag-Lloyd’s vessel – the Kiel Express – broke free from its mooring in Port Botany as winds reached 126km/h, causing a trail of destruction.

    The Hapag-Lloyd ship cut the mooring of the OOCL Hong Kong, sending it free. The stern of the Kiel Express then collided with a stationary Safmarine vessel, the Makutu. The Kiel Express then swung around to collide side-by-side.

    The current very low price for crude oil will probably hamper any projects in the medium term, there's talk of the North Sea becoming uneconomical if it continues for any prolonged period.

    Yeah there are quite a few drill ships stopping work. I believe a few companies are laying off people and some contracts being stopped.
    Luckily the ROV ship I work on is booked up for jobs next year that have to be done....

    Ireland gets it's first privatised port
    Burke Shipping acquires Greenore Port in Co Louth


    First major port to be 100% privately owned in State

    Greenore is strategically located next to the Dublin-Belfast economic corridor, so it is capable of servicing both cities

    Burke Shipping Group, the principal operating subsidiary of the family-owned Doyle Group, has acquired Greenore Port in Co Louth. The port was previously jointly owned by One51 and the state-owned Dublin Port Company.

    The price Burke Shipping paid for the port is not known but it is thought to be in the region of €5 million. Burke did not respond to requests for comment.

    The company, which employs 300 people and has offices in all major Irish ports, is understood to plan to invest a substantial sum in improving Greenore. It will be the first significant port to be entirely privately owned in the Republic.

    Burke Shipping plans to target the container and bulk shipping market and compete with the Dublin Port Company and other ports for this business. Greenore is strategically located next to the Dublin-Belfast economic corridor, so it is capable of servicing both cities.

    Burke Shipping is owned by Connor and Frank Doyle, whose grandfather founded the original company DF Doyle Stevedoring in 1886. The company is led by Brian McCarthy who has worked with the company since 1980, and been chief executive since 2006.

    Greenore port’s potential has been recognised by An Bord Pleanála, which has described it one of Ireland’s “critical infrastructure assets.” The Port was owned equally by One51 and the Dublin Port Company via a company called Renore Ltd. This was set up to buy the operations of the port in April 2002. The sale was handled by IBI Corporate Finance.

    In November Burke Shipping announced that it was investing further in its container terminal in Dublin Port by investing in a new rubber tyred gantry (RTG) crane used to move containers, bringing to seven its total RTGs in Dublin. In total it said it had invested €30 million in Dublin Port.

    The Doyle family was previously involved in a consortium with One51, then led by businessman Philip Lynch, which unsuccessfully tried to buy Irish Continental Group, the owner of Irish Ferries.

    Apparently the grounding was deliberate - she had developed a bad list and was put aground to avoid a capsize:-

    A car carrier stranded next to a busy shipping lane was grounded deliberately to prevent it from capsizing, its owners have said.
    The 51,000 tonne Hoegh Osaka became stricken on the Bramble Bank between Southampton and the Isle of Wight last night after it sailed from the Hampshire port with its cargo of 1,400 cars.
    The incident prompted a major rescue operation with the 24 crew members and a pilot having to be taken to safety by Coastguard helicopter and RNLI lifeboats. Two people suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.
    The 180-metre Singapore-registered ship is currently listing at 52 degrees and the salvage operation is expected to take days, possibly weeks.
    A 200 metre exclusion zone has been set up around the ship to prevent small vessels interfering with the tugs and other shipping.
    Ingar Skiaker, CEO of Hoegh Autoliners which owns the vessel, said that no oil had leaked from the vessel and preventing any environmental impact was his key priority.
    He said: "Our vessel Hoegh Osaka is currently grounded at Bramble Bank in the Solent outside the port of Southampton. All crew plus one pilot, in total 25 people were evacuated from the vessel and all are safe and accounted for.

    I understand the engine room was pumping fuel between tanks and put too much into a wing tank and this problem was compounded by her large turn to port at the same time, she kept listing over and without many options, the pilot and captain agreed to run her ashore rather than allow her to capsize in a deep water & busy channel.

    Lots of great comments online about the ugliness of the ship and therefore inherent instability of the design...

    First ship I sailed on was registered in Majuro, MI. It's the American tanker flag of convenience. All officers aboard were British & Irish. The "home port" has no bearing on nationality of crew these days.

    The coast guard is monitoring a huge 292m container ship which has broken down and is drifting off Fastnet lighthouse off the Cork coast.

    The stricken Atlantic Companion vessel was on route from Liverpool to Halifax when it experienced engine problems earlier today.

    The ship's captain hopes to restart the engines within the next hour and make for shelter to carry out urgent repairs.

    Coast guard officers at Valentia are in regular contact with the vessel's captain and is monitoring its location.

    There is no immediate danger to shipping in the area.

    Five crew members from an Aran island fishing vessel were rescued after the twin-rig trawler began taking water and sank off the Scottish coast.


    The 23m Iuda Naofa owned by Mairtín “20” Ó Conghaíle of Inis Mór signalled that it was in distress on Tuesday morning after it began taking water about 48 miles north of the Butt of Lewis.

    Aesthetically disagreeable to the average eye perhaps, but mixing Ro-Ro (1000 unit capacity) with containers (3,100 TEU) makes for an interesting cargo mix and probably a decent run ashore for her crew.

    What caused the prop to start turning just before she went under, would a short in electrics do it or something else?
