Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Might've missed the train on earphone discussion but anyone got recommendations for on-ear ones that are fairly cheap? Tried a pair before that weren't great on the lower stuff. Mainly DnB and Metal I listen to so that kinda spoiled it. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

what do you mean by on ear? Like the big cup ones?

I have a pair of Sony DJ headphones. Lush sound out of them and of course they block out external noise but you look like a bit of a tit wearing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭Cravez

Usually prefer the in-ear canal headphones, noise isolation preferably as I like to listen to my music loudish (but so that anyone around can hear :o). Tried a few of the backband and headband type headphones but always find them uncomfortable for some reason

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

The ones that go deep into your ear are good alright but I can't help feeling a bit violated when I insert them....

The little bud ones always fall out of my ears. I have weird ears I think.

Noise cancelling ones are the shizz.

Got to be really careful with them though; if you accidentally blast your ears at 100% volume off a laptop (as Windows 7 makes easy, defaulting everything to 100%) or some other source with a lot of output, you can get permanent hearing damage with in-ear earphones.

My dad found out the hard way there, and is partially deaf in one ear.

yeah them's the ones i'm saying wont fit in my ears. feckin yokes

You usually get various ear buds in different sizes with your in-ear headphones that you can then switch and make them fit in your ear easier. I think you can buy even bigger ones in shops

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Yeah I don't usually have it at max volume anyway. Usually have it at normal levels then adjust every time I think I want it louder.

yeah. I've seen people JOGGING with them like! HOW?

When i put them in I have to hold my head perfectly horizontal and still and I usually end up exhibiting a kind of gormless facial expression as a result.

closed headphones are the best from my experience. i've had to use a lot of different types.

technics budget headphones for about 50 are decent enough.

most ive spent on a set was 200 and i'd only use them if i got a gig or a session to work at.

Yeah the cup ones. My freakishly small ears aren't a big enough recepticle for buds. :pac:

Just finished watching The Bourne Identity! The DVD decided to play in my laptop for the first time in 3 months. Now I want to watch the other two films.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Music Moderators, Politics Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 22,360 CMod ✭✭✭✭Dravokivich

been meaning to watch them again lately meself. but got stuck in the middle of watching clint eastwood / sly stallone / steven seagal and jean cluade van damme movies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

First time seeing it! I've been trying to see this film for about a year!

The first time I went to watch it, house was quiet, had the popcorn and coke at the ready, open the dvd case, not in the friggin box!

Then, found it one day so decided I'd watch it on my laptop. Hasn't worked for ages. (it does this with some movies).

Tonight I had my laptop idle coz I was doing some study. I go back to it after an hour and there was the film waiting to start?!? Strange.Good reason to stop studying! :D

Only like the Dirty Harry films. Not really into westerns. The others, ah, they're alright. I have only seen the latest Rocky film. :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

I dunno what the limit is at the moment. Must check that out. Sometimes its a pain though as I tend to find the movies with frickin subtitles attached.

    Not in English either.. :o

Just need to know what to look for :pac: I switched from Eircom once they started enforcing their caps. Of course just after I switched they raised their cap above what I have now. Still, 170GB a month is enough, I've hit somewhat of a wall in trying to fill another hard drive after filling the first 2 1.5TB ones. With Linux ISOs obviously.

Oh yeah. Totally. Yep. Yeah. Linux you say. yep.

    :o

Ah, I know what you mean. Just not the Linux bit. don't worry about it. :pac:

Oh, I watched the Inbetweeners the other day. I stupidly got hyped up about it so I wasn't that impressed with it. And it just kinda ended.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Well I dunno what else people could download 300GB a month of :pac:

I've never really watched The Inbetweeners, saw ads, heard about it and it just seemed like something I'd hate. Saw a coupla minutes of an episode once and told my mate I was going home if he didn't put it off. :pac: Fcukin ages since I saw a new film or TV show I was interested in. That's a lie actually, Archer is fcukin awesome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

I only discovered it this February. Needed something to unwind with after Schol. Laughed my ass off. I guess some things people hype up just don't interest you. Like the Simpsons. I don't get it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Early Simpsons yeah, long time since I laughed at it though. Archer is well worth watching. A mate recommended it who is very hit-and-miss with his opinions (:pac:) and I was put-off by the animation style but it's really hilarious.

I wonder should I really start studying for my repeats though. Had a quick "ZOMG I'm fcuked!" moment this morning but I'm annoyingly calm and collected about it again. :pac:

Yea we've been with Eircom for about a decade here, and I don't think there's a single month we haven't gone way over our download cap; they don't seem to enforce it here I don't think, which is confusing as I've read about it being enforced properly many times by other people.

The Game by Neil Strauss - it's about Pick up artists - and before people jump on me for that - got it because one of my mates read it and said it was a good story and some of the psychological points made in it are very good, which is fairly true from what I've listened to so far.

It's not bad so far but the guy reading the book has an annoying/cringey accent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

yeah i know what you mean, you can pick up on very good psychological analyses in many places, doesn't mean you have to agree with it.

that's the thing about audio books, i'd have to know what the voice was like before buying, couldn't be listening to some annoying accent.

Can't imagine listening to a straight-forward novel as an audiobook tbh. Listened to The Bro Code and I am America and So Can You which are both comedic stuff.

I bought that book a few weeks ago and still haven't gotten round to reading it. That'll be my task for Tuesday and Wednesday.

In other news, working a late shift on a Saturday night is no craic. It's the anti-craic in fact.

*Edit: Just realised all ye feckers are on the beer! Hope ye're having fun!

I listened to Of Mice and Men before and loved it - was done by Gary Sinise who you think would be a boring guy to listen to but overall loved it.

From listening to it I'm not sure it's something I'd actually read - I'm a slow reader tbf but from listening to it I'd imagine it's something I wouldn't have committed to were I reading it....if that makes sense

Man at this hour in my bleary eyed state practically anything would make sense!:D

I do understand though. Had that problem recently with "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", just found most of the book tough going and had to summon motivation to go back to reading it.

I got The Fry Chronicles by Stephen Fry for Christmas and I've yet to finish it - S.F. is one of my favourite people, the book is all about him and yet I can't seem to find the time to sit down and read it...

It's not that it's boring or anything but my time is limited and I'm going to try to learn stuff via audio in the car - I finished The Game this morning while enjoying a bit of a lie in - so I absorbed the book in 3 sittings basically - Friday evening driving home until Sunday morning....were it the book I'd spend a good few weeks reading it and that's if I found it interesting!

I'm just finished reading the Fry Chronicles. I found it a very good read, that man has an amazing grasp of the English language. It's something you need time to read though as it takes a bit if concentration.

Anyone got any other suggestions for books? Like real life, factual ones or autobiographical books..

    What a freaking awesome night.

Met a group of 5 U.S. students. 2 of them had to be carried home after bragging the Yanks can out-drink the Irish. Foolish people!

Got home with 3 girls phone-numbers, fantastic music all night and now I get to spend my Sunday afternoon watching Dr Who :D

And I may still be a wee bit drunk :pac:

Doing alright man. Didn't think it was that cold meself.

Was a bit odd on the way to the trainstation earlier, noticed parents were driving their kids to a pick up point for a school bus. Blocking up most of the bloody road so they were.
