    Thanks again for posting this.

Aldi in Parnell Street still had plenty of these this morning - the cashier laughed at me for buying five bags of Haribo and nothing else...

    I've just emerged from a sugar-induced coma.

    Haribo, you delicious bastards.

Just bought a bottle of Nugan cabernet shiraz in Centra beside the train station in Drumcondra for EU5.99. I've drunk a lot worse before for three times the price.

    Nugan Estate €10.69 – now €7.69
    · Chardonnay
    · Sauvignon Blanc
    · Shiraz
    · Cabernet

Nugan Third Generation €8.99 promo €5.99
    · Shiraz/Cabernet
    · Chardonnay
    · Shiraz
    · Semillon/Chardonnay

Promo runs till Sat 19th Sept

    From the producer's email;

    "Nugan Estate uses:

Casein / Skim Milk Powder for removal of phenolics in Botrytis Semillon *. Milk & Milk Products are not consumed by Vegans (but is/may be consumed by Vegetarians). Casein / Skim Milk is not used in any other products for fining at Nugan Estate.

We do not (nor have ever) use Animal Products (eg: Gelatin, Isinglass, etc) & thus, all wines produced at Nugan Estate are compliant for Vegetarians. "

So it looks like all of the above are suitable for vegans.

*Botrytis Semillon is neither stocked nor on promotion by the above retailers.

I bought a Lemon Sorbet carton in Tesco on Friday - it's clearly labelled as "suitable for vegans" and the price was EUR 1.49
(I hope this qualifies as a special offer! I had never seen vegan lemon sorbet in Tesco before!)

Thanks for the Haribo tip - got 10 packets, then went back a couple of days later and got the last 3. I've sent Aldi a thank you email for that and the Granose veggie pates.

BTW, spotted bags of those Haribo "Funny Mix" sweets in Holland and Barret, Swan Centre, Rathmines for €1.39..for the hard-up. Still no sign of those veggie Haribo "Jelly Beans" in my local SuperQuinn in Ranelagh.

Not much doing, bargain-wise, at the mo but Dunnes are selling Traditional Cheese Co. cheese (veggie rennet) - 400g blocks for €3.

Are those granose pates nice ThouShaltnot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭Thoushaltnot

Yup - I thought so. Especially the Shiitake one. They all have a slight smokey taste going on and not as solid as a Brussels pate. I'm sure they're not to everybody's taste but defo a great standby for a picnic or a buffet. Nice alternative to butter in a sambo. I think all 3 are suitable for vegans but they do contain yeast. For 99c, ye cannae go far wrong.

The 336g bags of frozen Quorn sausages are half price at €1.27 in Tesco Dundrum (and presumably, all the bigger better Tescos). Till the 25th.

Holland & Barrett have a special offer on Body Fortress protein at the minute (any flavour). Half-price, so €20 instead of €40. Might be useful for any vegetarians looking to supplement their protein intake.

Just in case any avid chickpea fans are unaware, Aldi now do a 500g bag of dried chickpeas for 99c. Cheapest you can get them anywhere I'd say. I am pleased :)

I find leaving them soaking once I get up and then cooking them in the hours of darkness to be most effective! Leaving them overnight means you'll be stuck in during the day looking after them and chickpeas can take up to 3 hours too

    I cook too many beans.

There are two ways of fast tracking the dried bean thing -

1.wash beans; place in water in saucepan and bring to rapid boil for 10 minutes; take off heat and leave to soak for one hour; put back on heat and bring to boil, then simmer for 1 hour; done

    2. Get a pressure cooker!

I came across a method somewhere that said you could bring them to the boil and then soak them for four hours. If I can get away with just one hour this is very good news!

Yeah, I was thinking that too. But i wondered if these were some particular variety... Either way, soaking them does no harm and would speed the cooking, but shouldn't be necessary.

Aldi have 55c cans of chickpeas, yay! Don't know if they've had them for long but I only just noticed.

I feel like I post a lot about beans in this thread.

More good Aldi stuff next Thursday, well, if you like baking :P Maple syrup for €3.99! Tis usually about €6 or €7... Some cool looking cake tins too and their cocoa powder is back again which I've missed these past few months. They stopped stocking it and it's the cheapest you can get anywhere (€1.59).

It's all here just scroll down a bit (unless you're looking to do some welding!)

Edit: They're cake tin liners, damn, not as exciting.

Kidney Beans 25c a can in Lidl.

Life is too short to soak beans.

Not when you have to spent time washing the slimy liquidy stuff off the tinned ones, or when the beans are too soft, and then there's the tin to recycle as well:D
