Has Sawa done anything in the last 10 years? I remember he was in Final Destination and Idle Hands, and then once the shine wore off he seemed to just disappear. (On the other hand, AFAIK the shine was only there because he had name/face recognition from the Mickey Mouse Club or some such nonsense...)

If I recollect correctly Wright isn't using Pym as the primary focus, moreso as a kind of a mentor for a protege. I'm guessing JGL and Rudd would be playing the protege.

As an aside, I'd prefer Rudd as I'm just so damn curious to see how he'd get on in the Marvel Universe.

That being said, I'm pretty sure JGL was linked with Doctor Strange recently, so it's not impossible that both men will have roles in Phase 3.

Interesting quote in the /Film piece.

Going back many years, to when Wright was putting together Scott Pilgrim, there’s a comment from the director about how he then planned to incorporate both Pym and Lang into the story.

…what we want to do, the idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both. Is to have a film that basically is about Henry Pym and Scott Lang, so you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60′s, in sort of “Tales to Astonish” mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang’s story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him. So it’s like an interesting thing, like the “Marvel Premiere” one that I read which is Scott Lang’s origin, it’s very brief like a lot of those origin comics are, and in a way, the details that are skipped through in the panels and the kind of thing we’d spend half an hour on.

Disappointed for Wright, he's been attached to the project since '06 and I had high hopes as his style really suits comic books

That's really disappointing. I mean, Wright was pretty much the driving force behind getting an Ant-Man movie even greenlit. He spent 8 years working on this!

Credible but it says nothing beyond educated guessing.

If things are starting to crumble at Marvel it really is their own fault. They have curtailed and dismissed so many talented people over the years.

What's interesting about this is that to me, it always sounded like Marvel and Wright were at odds over this project. Wright was adamant that the film would revolve around Scott Lang, while Marvel were still treating Hank Pym prominently in other media.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's one or two other dramatic occurences here.

Can't say this news allays my fears that Marvel are reluctant or unwilling to allow directors to take creative risks. To push their films to the level they need to be at (quality wise, anyway) they need to trust distinctive writers and directors to do something new and fresh with the material, not endlessly churn out solid but safe fare (although sadly I think box office receipts favour solid but safe fare). I suppose there's even more weight on GotG now to see if James Gunn really has managed to craft something that hasn't been crippled by corporate interference and conservatism.

Late to this news, and while the thread shows I was never a supporter of the project, I'm disappointed to see an obviously creative talent such as Wright depart; I'm a fan of the guys work, and seemed like the kind of director tailor-made for comic adaptations. I echo Johnny_ultimate's sentiments that this all seems to be a knock-on effect of Marvel's increasing stranglehold over its own creative direction. I remember being quite excited around the time of Thor 1 about the prospect of a shared universe; now it seems like a curse, a guarantee of creative bankruptcy. (if this is a reason for Wright's departure mind you, but you'd imagine it is)

Marvel aren't interested in directors who bring anything unique to the fold. What they want are inexperienced, easy to manipulate directors who don't have the clout to be able to do their own thing. Marvel want puppets and its becoming increasingly obvious that the Marvel universe is not one that welcomes creativity

Anyone think Marvel's fear of directorial creativity may have sprung from the backlash to Iron Man 3. Shane Black took a huge leap with the Mandarin reveal and it really divided audiences.

Impossible to say until someone on the inside comes out and spills the beans, but given Kevin Feige came out and said there were Marvel films planned up until 2028, from the very outset that sounds like an environment where creative types simply won't be needed / wanted. You could be right though: perhaps Black's interpretation of the Mandarin went against the great Marvel Plan, and given they've already retconned Ben Kingsley's character, looks like the worst aspects of comicbook storytelling is already finding its way to the cinematic universe.

I still can't get my head around the 2028 comments, that more than anything is the indicator of where Marvel's headspace is.

IM 3 is the 6th highest grossing film of all time. I'd say Marvel would have him canonised if they could.

Yeh but that just mean people paid to see it. A lot of fans came out of it really pissed off with the Mandarin and voiced that opinion vehemently. That sort of reaction is going to go over Marvel heads regardless of how much money it made.

Getting people to see one movie isn't enough, Marvel have to get them to see the next movie and pissing off the fan base by allowing directors to tinker isn't their best interests.

I'm not saying it is the reason, just that it could be a factor
