Anyone here go to this? - one of the few stages easily accessible from Ireland in a day, sorry I didn't think of this a few weeks ago when flights would have been cheap, would have made a nice day out!

yes, it was good fun. I'd imagine as a spectator it won't get much better than the prologue (even though it makes terrible viewing on telly) - its basically a 5 hour spectacle as opposed to a handful of groups going by, then gone.

Those Belgians REALLY like Philip Gilbert. The cheer when he went around was amazing. You could hear it coming, then when it passed it followed him down the road and around the corner. Great stuff.

Eurosport you motherfcuker where are the highlights of le Tour! It was meant to start 10 minutes ago. I can accept losing out to grand slam tennis, but show jumping!! Grrrrrrrrr!

I managed to get a seat on a fence overlooking the 50m-to-go line. Saw Dan Martin, Rojas, Cav, Voigt, Chavanel and Gilbert come in. Liege is Gilbert's hometown, so everyone was going mental as he came up the line - it looked like he might just beat Chavanel (who was leading at that point).

Also, I assumed that the spectators would be strictly segregated from the riders, but this wasn't really the case. Before the race, I was leaning over a barrier, trying to spot someone I recognised, when someone came up behind me and said 'excuse me' - Cadel Evans, carrying his bike back into the enclosure. I wished him luck, and he kind of mumbled thanks - I was going to give him a clap on the back, but decided that he might not appreciate it.

There were riders warming up where the spectators were milling around - I saw Van Den Broeck and Roche cycling past me (gave Roche a cheer, but I doubt he heard me with his headphones in).

Fantastic day, Liege is a lovely town, too.

Eurosport can be a bit all over the place when it comes to schedules and times. Many a time i set to record but if another live event over runs then the whole schedule is out of sync.

Are itv4 showing the stage live today? Only channel that I have that seems to be showing it. Or are tg4 showing it or just highlights ?

Is TG4 gonna show any live TDF on the telly after the tennis?

The sooner the tennis is over the better.

    Betting without Big 2

Big 2 = Bradley Wiggins & Cadel Evans
    D Menchov 7/2
    P Rolland 22/1
    S Kruijswijk 100/1

    V Nibali 4/1
    M Scarponi 66/1
    D Martin 100/1

    R Gesink 7/1
    P Velits 66/1
    I Basso 100/1

    R Hesjedal 8/1
    M Rogers 66/1
    C Vandevelde 150/1

    J Van Den Broeck 8/1
    C Horner 66/1
    L Westra 150/1

    F Schleck 12/1
    N Roche 80/1
    J C Peraud 150/1

    C Froome 14/1
    T Van Garderen 80/1
    J J Cobo 250/1

    S Sanchez 14/1
    J Coppel 80/1
    T Danielson 250/1

    A Kloden 18/1
    R Taaramae 80/1
    T Martin 400/1

    L Leipheimer 18/1
    R Costa 80/1
    R Porte 400/1

    J Brajkovic 18/1
    B Mollema 100/1
    T Voeckler 500/1

    A Valverde 18/1
Anyone think Menchov isn't a bad bet in this market at 7/2?

Question for everyone. I may have missed this so here goes. Helmets. In the tour down under we saw someone (can't remember name) get banned for wearing the hardshell cover on the helmet. Then Cavendish wore it and he didn't get banned, presumably because he is Mark Cavendish. In this tour we now have Wiggins and Cavendish both sporting them. So whats the stance, are they banned, legal, illegal or does it depend on how big your name is?

I think (very much open to correction!!!) the rules now allow the use of equipment/accessories that are available for sale to the general public, which these helmet covers apparently are.

covers are illegal, if its part of the helmet as in these aero helmets the its ok , as far as i understand (apparently helmet vents cause a lot of turbulence)

Presumably all the manufacturers are required to provide yellow ones - the yellow helmet Cav is wearing is identical to the one he would normally wear (except for the colour)

So I just learnt a little something new about this years TDF, that the leading team have to wear the aero yellow helmets. I can understand the yellow as the leading team. But why unvented barr the vents at the back?
Is TG4 gonna show any live TDF on the telly after the tennis?

The sooner the tennis is over the better.

Live on their website everyday and in english.

Edit. Just seen ednwireland post re the hemlets. So is it a rule or a design feature for the Sky team?

they dont have to wear unvented helmets, they are choosing to do so for the aero benefits but yes they have to wear yellow helmets as the lead team (or maybe team sky just dont have enough yellow vented helmets for everyone ;) )

much simpler when it was just the number background colour yellow

The big news of the 2012 Tour de France was a change in dress code that was obvious thanks to the prominence of the Team Sky riders who wore yellow helmets as part of an innovation created for the 2012 race.

Gives something of an inside view on how the team are reacting to the LA furore and the six-month ban allegations.

Didn't want to put this in a stage-specific thread. With Wiggins now in yellow, and being the favourite, is the rest of the Tour going to be boring as hell? (Assuming he puts a chunk of time into Evans today.)

Are we going to see Sky controlling everything, or will they tire themselves out quickly, and things will open up again? Is it just going to a race for second place? Or will the mountains be a battlefield, with Evans and Nibali attacking Wiggins constantly?

How do people see it panning out?

I sincerely hope so. I honestly don't think Wiggins can compete on the biggest climbs so I suppose it will be about what the climbers can take out of him on the big mountains versus what he can do elsewhere.

i hope its not boring!... Its going to be hard for anyone to attack if Sky keep setting the pace like this. hopefully by the pyrenees they'll be tired and evans can have a go. im sure BMC have singled out a stage for the big attack.

on a different topic. just looked at ten Dams strava from yesterday. its frightening
    http://app.strava.com/rides/12848369

    my favourite segment is
    0.5km 134m 53.6km/h 594W 14167VAM 150bpm 00:00:34

14,167 VAM!!!!.. i know its only short but still didnt think that would be possible

I don't see Evans and Nibali (Evans especially) giving up without a big fight. Cadel will definitely try to throw every spanner in the works and break up the Sky machine.

Yikes, that's some outburst, I don't think the 'mighty' Lance even got that animated !!

    Quoted from the article above:
“I say they’re just f***ing w**kers, I cannot be doing with people like that,” said Wiggins, who holds a 10-second lead over defending champion Cadel Evans. ”It justifies their own bone-idleness because they can’t ever imagine applying themselves to do anything in their lives.
“It’s easy for them to sit under a pseudonym on Twitter and write that sort of ****, rather than get off their arses in their own lives and apply themselves and work hard at something and achieve something.
“And that’s ultimately it – c****,” he added.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

I admire Wiggo. But when I see an outburst like that from anyone in any walk of life I automatically assume they are trying to hide something.
Bankers, regulators and politicians here and elsewhere were guilty of similar reaction leading up to 2007/08. Generations of cyclists and other athletes implicated in doping historically have answered the same question in a similar angry fashion.

I believed that cycling had changed in terms of omertà - I will now reevaluate that belief.

Shane Stokes on twitter has been asking some very sensible and polite questions of Jonathan Vaughters and has been getting the run around IMHO.

This sport is not getting to grips with any of it's historical problems if recent reactions are anything to go by.

I'm not a time trial champion yet, but I think the word that I'd use is that I'm now competitive

holy **** I only just realised Wiggins is a 'mod' , explains his ridiculous side-burns
ffs I cant be hoping he wins the tour, im ex ska rude-boy
cmon Froome send that mod back to Brighton. :)

any rockers or psycho-billys out there, lets put our musical differences aside and make sure the mod doesnt win the tour else we will have Paul Weller doing a set on the Champs dElysse. :)

    Anyway, back on topic ...

I think Cadel will beat Bradley in the mountains. Last year he beat Andy and Albert which IMO are better climbers than Bradley. Cadel will have to make a move though cos Sky are very very strong and I'm not sure BMC have the required support for Cadel.

    Exciting racing ahead.

"Cambre used to be a chef for touring rock bands and musicians, including Bruce Springsteen. Twelve hours later, he was firing up the grill and cooking Swiss sausages for a team staff barbecue."

I bet the riders love that. "Sure Cadel, I'll do your massage after I've polished off this enormous plate of tasty sausages. How's the pasta and weak lemon squash?"
