Hey I was just wondering what is the cheapest first year accomodation ???
would it be on-campus or off campus... I would be looking for less then 2500 p/a is that a long shot ???
Also are there many student jobs available .,.. and would they pay enough to buy weeklyh groceries etc ??

Most accommodation is around 4500 - 5000 a year.. Private houses/flats are much cheaper.

Not many jobs around too I'm afraid :o

Even off campus a fairly decent house will still be ~300 a month so you'll be lucky not to hit 3000 a year.

If you had experience you might get some bar work but loads of people always apply. Clubs hire promotional staff to hand out stamps and stickers, they're usually advertising at the beginning of the semester.

How much does that promo work pay? I can't imagine it being much at all, especially as you're basically going to be working the nights you'd want to be out spending the money.

An NUIG student shouldn't even consider it. It's miles too far from NUIG. Check it out on Google Maps. Look at getting a cheap room in a shared house on the west side of the city.

Promo work will be reduced since Cuba/903 died last night. Awful shame.

Other venues wont have the same level of competition so promo jobs might be down a fair bit.

how long of a walk ???

Gleann Na Ri is the Dublin side of GMIT and would be about 3.5 miles from NUIG. It's over 2.5 miles from most of the part-time jobs you might pick up too. An hour on foot each way every day is a non-runner. So unless you fancy long cycles in the rain and wind every day and pricey taxis home after nights out I'd steer well clear.

My advice to any 1st year who's isn't determined to go for 'official' student accommodation is to share a house with some students on the the west side of the city near NUIG.

    Unless you run.

Trouble with that is, if you're by yourself, you're probably gonna be staying with a group of people who are already friends, or some erasmus students who can be really hit and miss when it comes to socialising...

I'd tend to agree with a lot of people, but I am not in contact with anyone I met in Lisdonagh in my first year. Friends are in my class and societies.

It's not hard to make friends in college, it's hard to keep all groups happy though!

Decent degree, social-life, sleep - pick two.

Change sleep to 'regular sleep', unless you tend to leave parties at 11pm so you get up the next day ;)

Last year i lived over in ballybrit (about the same distance) and it took about a hour maybe a hour and 20 mins to walk

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 jonesy93

Did you walk everymorning to the casmpus ??
Did you find that the lower cost made the walk bearable??
Did you "fit-in" with your roommates ?
    thanks..

It rains a lot in Galway.
Thats WAAY to far to be walking to college every morning.. Especially hungover! ;)

All student accommodation is a rip off! All the NUIG accommodations are all around the 4500 - 5000 mark.

Only way to get it cheaper is to go with a twin room

So I just booked corrib village, I'm delighted I got the room I wanted, double ensuite, but I'm heading to Galway away from all my friends so I thought corrib village would be the best place to book to make friends and the likes. where have others going into first year in September 2011 booked? :)
I'm hoping to get Psychology but if not, Arts and continue psychology for the 3/4 years :)
if anyone else is heading to NUIG or staying in Corrib Village next year pm me :) Im kinda feeling a bit worried about going so far away knowing no one like :/ oh well :) it'll be great fun :D

If you're wanting to get into 2nd year psych then Corrib is def a bad place to live..Basically constant noise and hassle. And it a hole in general.

It's a kip and you'll do your liver permanent damage, but christ the stories i've heard are unreal :D I know people who lived there in 1st year and they're still best friends with their neighbours years later
