Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not even in production, it's just a student science project. But I'd love to see one first hand to see if it lives up to the hype.

I'll take some convincing that you don't burn more calories making those logs than you actually get back from burning them :D

It was just adding waste paper, sawdust from saw and dung to a drum n leaving it to form a mushy mulch. Then 5 minutes made me 10 logs.

A neighbor makes the paper bricks and spends ages moving them about and turning them to get them to dry out. Then seems to have to use extra coal to get them to burn

they must'nt be dry enough then, which is a complete waste of time and bad for the chimney also

Over the years I have seen a lot of attempts to make paper logs and the main problem seems to be that paper alone isn't a great material for making logs out of. Even when bone dry I've not seen a convincing fire made up from just recycled paper logs. Using the paper pulp to hold sawdust and wood shavings together as a brick is a much better idea.

Paper burns too quick... Dubg and sawdust is readily available to me so im using all three. The dung acts as a glue as far as i can see... If they dont pack together well enough im going to add wallpaper paste

Got a load of real good quality pine pallets with 9 huge heavy blocks on the bottom of each so spent the afternoon cutting them all and splitting the pieces. Now have enough wood for whats left of the cold weather

What do you cut them up with? I find an old Jigsaw really handy.

We have two stoves and its a pain to burn wood with nails in it in one of them as the riddler gets jammed up so I sort all the pallet wood so blocks with nails only go in the wood burner (no riddler).

This sounds like an interesting project, something I'd like to see more of.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/science/emily-duffy-15-designs-clever-sleeping-bag-to-help-the-homeless-1.2057762

I'd like to see how it's sealed at the base, as it appears to be just a tube?

Also interesting to see how light, durable and packable it would be.

More about it on the Journal, looks more an emergency survival type sleeping bag.

Not really worthy of posting but I got an aitor. German army knife and a British army dpm camo respirator bag in the post this morning from pioneer army surplus in Ennis, delighted with them and my cheap prepping bits! The bag is just the right size for edc and I'll be putting the knife somewhere safe and I use my Leatherman as my daily :-)

Alls i'm saying is you're going ahead with this crazy notion of mixing up horsehiite, paper and water and hoping to use it as fuel...its not a good idea and it wont work.

Why dont you try listening instead of ranting?

Been researching Aquaponics systems and have ordered equipment for a mini one to grow herbs and lettuce in my home. (Technically this was yesterday).

Stocking up on Antibiotics for my goldfish and have bought a couple for myself. Unfortunately the Missus is allergic so if the SHTF we'll have to amputate. :-D

Had some money in my wallet and as it was very cold out with a slight potential to get worse I stocked up on a few things. Not much we don't have but got 20l of petrol now the price has dropped a bit (will get used up in the lawn mower before it ever goes stale), got a couple of weeks of dog and cat food (will last in store at least a year) an extra 24l of bottled water and two 1l bottles of thin bleach for SHTF water sterilisation.

In the last couple of weeks I also got some store stuff from Amazon.co.uk that I can't find easily over here, foil wrapped tea bags and foil wrapped coffee bags. Luxury items, but morale is half the battle :)

Presumably they are either vacuumed or nitrogen filled to stop the contents going bad

It's not true. She chewed off her right leg and survived.

Totally, but I like the Lyons coffee bags which are foil wrapped and I've had the the foil packed Tetley Tea bags before and found them handy. About 9 cents each for tea bags is a bit expensive but I know they'll still be good if I don't use them for another 12-18 months.

Always used to use Marvel, but I don't like the paper "cans" it comes in now. If you take a lot of sugar in tea then tins of Condensed Milk are perfect.

I keep 6 liters of uht milk if you can keep it cold it's fine for cereal also

I don't have much milk but my girlfriend can't have tea without. So I habitually have no milk when I'm on my own for a few days.

To get around this I recently bought both uht and powdered milk. Using the powdered first as an experiment. Looks weird going in but tastes just fine according to her. I've had uht in coffee plenty before moving to black coffee, its ok. Not great straight but not too noticeable in coffee

Oh and on general topic, this week I rebuilt my fireplace, lined the chimney and installed a stove.
It was a testicle load of work but should hopefully pay off

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,764 ✭✭✭my3cents

Nothing as strenuous as mawk and something I was doing anyway and then realised it had an S&SS application.

Bought a second hand net-book for use in the car and on trips to see relatives in the UK, I just wanted something cheap and small I could show the rest of the family photos on. Once I had it all set up leaving space for photos I still have 200GB of space spare for survival manuals and technical info. To make it even more useful I bought a car charger and will get a couple of spare batteries. The net-book is hardly used with a good battery that does over 4 hours on a charge (reading at low screen illumination) but still think at least one extra battery would be handy.

Nothing fancy in the the Net-book its an Acer Aspire D255 €100 S/H, I know everyone else is buying touch screen devices but this does exactly what I want.
