Price a new one cost to change and price that one cost to change.

Really depends on how much money you want to spend/save but I would expect there to be somewhere in the region of a 5k difference in the cost to change.

what are peoples thoughts on a 1.9 diesel octavia, with 170k miles on it as a first car? It's 900 euro and has nct to 15. I'm over 25 so insurance isn't much more than a 1.3 litre ect.

I havn't gone to see it yet but it is likely to be about to fall apart at the mileage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

Depends on the car really. The most reliable car I've ever had was a 01 Tdi Golf, bought it with over 220k and sold it with 250k miles

Get someone to look at the front suspension , incl wishbones, bushings etc as VAG cars from that era suffered bad front suspension wear. (I know, I had a mk4 golf :P )
Timing belt is every 60 k miles, so assuming it has been done at 60+120, it will be due in 10k miles - otherwise due initially. Its an approx €350-400 job to do.
Otherwise great car imo, not much else to go wrong with them (apart from turbos of course but that should be easy to spot), and they run forever.

Hi all, just looking for cars in around the €1000 mark to use as a city run-around with the occasional trip of Cork-Dublin, maybe once a month or so.

Any opinions on this Lanos? It will be my first time buying a car. 51k miles seems suspiciously low for a '00 car?

The milage is ok on it, nowt to worry about there.

    this is what I'd so....

Tell the dealer you are serious about buying the car, only if he puts a better deal together ..make him work for your business/the sale ...
tell him you'll do 9k with your car ......... and stay stum.....say nothing.....let him do all the work to get your money.....see where it goes.

Ask to see the service history and ask him to highlight the frequency of the oil changes. As I said, you need to see at least 6 or 7 documented.

Get your mechanic to check it over, and drive it. Check the tyres are good, and not cheap chineese shyte.

The car is not due a T belt till 125k miles.

Ask about the warranty - haggle for a longer one from them, not a third party for extra money..

Get them to data check the car and provide you with a copy....

Then, to seal the deal, tell them you want a set of mats, and a tank of fuel....:D

    good luck

Thanks for all the advice, I went ahead an bought the 2010 Focus that was in the add. The mechanic that came with me found a few things wrong with it so the garage fixed what needed to be done.
Its my first Diesel so I was under the impression that when I start it I need to wait for the glow plug light to go out before I start it. But when I start it the glow plug doesnt come on at all. It starts no problem, I was just wondering is this normal for this model of car, or maybe the glow plug fuse is broken?

no , some and many modern diesels are intelligent and only warm the plugs if required (under certain temps - cold start for instance)
don't over run on oil services on the 1.6 diesel focus....get the oil changed bang on time, or even earlier.....every 8,000 miles would be my opinion,

    good luck and well wear.

Looking for a bit of advice ... We've had to change our car to the dreaded 7 seater. Was wondering what kind of discount could you get from a dealer when buying outright with cash? Looking at something like:

    http://carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=1003066&r=s.php%3Fm%3D72%26o%3D1133%26r%3D2010%26g%3D0

Not really great at this sort of thing but figured as we are buying with cash, no trade in we could probably get a discount from advertised price.

you will definately get a straight cash price deal. There only one way of finding out......and its best to do this. Go see both cars...(ringing in and asking will not give you the credibility you need - if you want to be viewed as a serious punter, go in )...test drive them, try and deal with the Dealer principal (he makes the decisions), and let him/her hear you making all the right noises and let him/her qualify you....and tell them you are a CASH buyer, NO TRADE in, can buy TODAY - but only for a good substancial discount as you are seeing comparible and same vehicles elsewhere but will buy here if the deal is right - (best price, new nct, mats, diesel, maybe a free 1st service) push- push - push them, and then stay stum........let them come back and work for your money.

Hi hope somone can help here.

Looking at a Toyota Auris at main dealer in cork.
Its 1.3 petrol with 13000 miles and cash @ 12500.

I wondering is this a good price? Or what do they go for . also mileage seems low

Given the list price in places like carzone with main dealers is it usually expected that you would get some form of money off?

why ohhh why do people always come on here looking for CRYSTAL BALL GAZING?

how are we meant to know the margin a dealer has on a particular Auris and what he'll let it out the gate for?

Of course you'll get it cheaper if you've not trade in, and paying cash.

    Go and ask!

    The year and spec?

1.33 and miles suggests its a uk model

As for discounts, there's no set amount. Some dealers price to sell, some build in big margins. Best to compare like with like, figure out realistically what you'd be happy paying and aim for that.

Also, drive as many different cars as you can for perspective.

Currently considering changing our car. We have an 06 Ford Focus petrol, with just under 88k on the clock. (Lower than usual mileage because my wife uses it just a couple of days a week while up to now, at least, I drive another car).We have had the car for six years and it hasn't given us any trouble at all, but looking to change while the car still has a reasonable value. (NCT'd till May 14, taxed till end April 14)

"Focussing" (!) on at an 11 year reg version, which from my initial survey only comes in 1.5 Diesel version. We've never had a diesel car (I know very little about cars generally).

So two questions, really...Firstly, would it be better to sell privately, then buy from a dealer on a cash basis. Secondly, does anyone have an opinion on the merits or otherwise of a 2011 Focus?
Any replies would be much appreciated.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,737 ✭✭✭MidlandsM

Yes, sell private (if possible) and buy straight. However, explore what the dealer will do on a cost to change?

2011 1.6 tdci focus is the car you refer to? they don't come in 1.5 .....they come in 1.6 and 1.8 diesel, and rarely a 2.0 diesel.

see this post i put up advising a chap buying a similar car. He has since bought it.

Carzone will list 1.6 as 1.5. A glitch I pointed out to them in 2004 when all our cars had the wrong size listed...

If you list them as between 1500 and 1599cc they show up as 1.5

Haven't picked any particular car yet...wasn't even aware that there were two different models for that year.
Boards is my first port of call as I brace myself for the arduous task of changing cars, so looking forward to looking back when all is sorted and hopefully happy with the outcome.

The new model was launched in late 2011 but there were still a lot of old models registered in 2011, they will be very similar to your 2006 model. The new model also got a newer 1.6 TDCi engine with a six speed gearbox.

Think they also got 6 speed box around then too.
Warranty is 100,000 miles so plenty left. Needs proper service history.
    I'd aim for a 113hp 1.6d over an 89hp 1.6d

I'm not too pushed on the look tbh, once the car is reliable roomy and good value then I'm happy. Would be nice to have as many extras as possible though.

Motor tax on those 2009 Avensis 1.6 is over €500 a year, just something to note.

That 2010 is dear enough IMO, and there won't be any noticeable discount built into that price either going on past attempted dealings there.

Not a great selection out there for us.

Find a car you like the look of within budget. Drive one locally even if its bonkers money. Figure what you want.
Then find the best one you can wherever it is. Ask all the right questions.
Many dealers will meet you halfway from home if you're serious enough about the car.
If the car is still under manufacturers warranty, it won't make any potential warranty work any more difficult.

No just one. I have a Ford focus 06 LX and we're looking to get a new one. Big reason is because we now have 2 kids so we need more room in the car, looking for one with a big boot and enough room for 2 child carseats and a small adult in the back seat.

just came across here when I started looking for a car lots of great advice.

Can anyone offer ideas on this one. Rang the seller re the gearbox he said that it prob needs changing and has a few other minor problems with it like the carpet mentioned and added it was due service and needed new tyres.

I asked him how stuck on price he was but wouldn't budge on phone, suggested I come look at car and we can talk price then if I want to buy it. Any ideas?

Forget the jazz so. I reckon a skoda superb or a midi MPV like a verso is the way to go.
For a small car with enough space, a honda frv would be a winner.
    2.2 diesel would be entertaining.

Any ideas?
If that's a multitronic I'd walk. In fact I'd walk either way.

Forget the jazz so. I reckon a skoda superb or a midi MPV like a verso is the way to go.
For a small car with enough space, a honda frv would be a winner.
    2.2 diesel would be entertaining.

Octavias! Was thinking of looking at this today....

Had a look at this one yesterday, loved the size of the boot....

Back seat won't be wide enough for what you need.

We had a look at one and we were happy enough with the size. We'd only have a small adult in the back seat very occasionally and the boot is perfect...those double buggy's are big.
Anything I should watch out for. They're going to NCT and service before I see it so I'm hoping its in good condition when I see it.

Have you actually fitted child seats in the back to see?

The boot is bigger than your focus but its not any bigger in the cabin.
