Pardon my ignorance here, but how exactly did early childhood studies not turn out the way you expected?

In any case, and no offense, but I wouldn't judge the academic ability of U.C.C. on the basis of early childhood studies.

Heloo!!! I hope you don't write your essays like that!!! Oh the excitement!!! I love exclamation marks!!!

    Only joking...

Kier, I'm sorry to hear that you're not enjoying your course. We all have good days and bad days. If you're about to enter second year then it's likely that you'll have more options and that you can choose aspects of the course more to your liking. You should definitely consider calling to see one of your lecturers. Have you ever done this before? Tell them how you're feeling and seek their advice. It's not true for all lecturers, but many really are interested in their students' well-being.

    furet...thanks lol
i havent talked to any one up there to be honest the only reason i am statyin untill next year is because im hopin the course does open up to more options specifically special needs!!!!
and every course in ucc is hard and i accept that but some people have it up their hole how E.C.S isnt as challangin as any other course them people have not heard any thing bout the course just cause its not medicine or anythin borin!!! i like wat i want to do after the course teaching special needs children in my opinion will be more rewarding than any lawyers job tearing families apart in the divorce court!!!!

From what I know of ECS, there's a lot of philosophy, psychology, paediatrics - and theory - involved. And these things are tough, no doubt. People who make snide comments about university courses often don't really know what they're talking about. Look, I'd definitely make it your business to speak to one of the lecturers even if it's only to ask them for the name of some other lecturer specialising in special needs. Then I'd arrange a meeting with that person (all teaching staff have office hours where you can call in for a chat) and have an informal discussion with them about what modules within ECS you should take etc., and this will (hopefully!!!! ;)) lead you down the right career path from taking the best options available.
I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it: UCC students do not make enough use of lecturers by having one-on-one meetings to discuss aspects of the course.
Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Don't expect much from the special needs lectures in 2nd year, assuming hell be the same guy that I had for last year, all he tends to talk about is the impact it has on parents lives, how to deal with families of children with special needs etc. there is little emphasis on any particular type of special needs. I ended up missing the majority of his lectures, only going to the guest ones on hearing impairments etc. As well be prepared for more of the family/social aspect and they are probably going to hone in on budget cuts etc. God I miss my Monday morning History lecture with Maura Cunneen, gas women, cant wait to have her again this year.

All I can say is work youre ass off in the first few months as your exams start the day you get back from the christmas break, followed by a few days of workshops and then youre out the gap from the end of January for placement.

And don't get me started on how people think E.C.S isnt a real course! While on placement in a primary school a teacher informed me that my course was a p*ss take, she said: "I remember when I was in U.C.C and had friend that did that course they were out drinking all the time!" I found it strange she studied in U.C.C and was now a primary school teacher, questioned what course she did her response, Oh I did Arts, English and History......supposedly that makes her more qualified to teach children than me!

As a person who's been to both UCD and LIT, I can honestly say that UCC is miles better than either of them. I love the campus, its quaint, its tightly knit too so navigating it is easy. The population are pretty sound, there's always something going on, be its gigs, debates or talks. Lecture halls are reasonably big and most of the staff are very approachable. Its so convenient in that the university is located only a ten minute walk from the city centre. And it has 2 bars, sure what else would you need! You sometimes have long queues for printers but what college doesn't! The only downside to UCC (and its a small complaint) is that the food in the Main is of a very poor quality. The stuff they serve in the Student Centre is ok but could be better.

Hearing a college is 'quaint' usually means its boring.

I meant the 'layout' of the campus, rather than the actual atmosphere within it.

Don't get me wrong, I amn't here for the med bashing, some of my good friends are doing medicine, they're the mental ones that seem to be in every year though, so they ain't all bad!

Can't blame being harsh about the medheads tbh, I've worked in a student accomodation and some (not all) of the medheads are dead fussy re: noise, and room-mates etc.

Not only med students but also psychology , and physio too as they are just as important to the well being of society and will end up working in a hospital too
Theses types of students are the most valued today

And your other thread was a joke man, get over it.

EDIT: My apologies, turns out it was Noffles that bore the burnt of the Rock in the other thread for questioning how a 117kg bench would grow your arms.

Nurses are really, really important. And many arts students will be teachers. Education's very important, too.

Scientists will make important discoveries, many of which will save lives.

I don't think you can measure someone's importance in society based on their college course. All degrees have the potential to lead somewhere important.

sorry I left out Nurses thanks physiologyRocks
