Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What's happening on campus?

I thought I should start a new thread for this as there doesn't seem to be one for events hosted by clubs or societies? If I'm wrong and I just missed it, do please point it out :)

Just in case any boardsies are interested, the Communist Party of Ireland (yes, we really have one) will be speaking about their new economic policies on campus tomorrow (Tuesday) @ 6pm. The Politics and Sociology society are hosting it (for our sins!) in the seminar room in Auxilia.

Auxilia is the building next to Student Services, near John Hume. There should be posters up tomorrow, so alternatively follow them. Or ask here for more specific directions, I'll check back sometime early tomorrow.

Please attend! I know it's RAG week and all, but it's unlikely to last more than an hour, and there should be an (admittedly limited) amount of wine for afters :D.

    Student speakers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭CnaG

Yes, probably should have Cian :/

No, not student speakers. I don't think there are students in the communist party on campus? On the socialist end of things there are the Socialist Party (aka the Joe Higgins party), Socialist Workers Party, Workers Solidarity Movement, Free Education for Everyone and the Social Solidarity Network and emm... I think that's it. Maybe a few others. Hopefully a good few of the above will show. Could prove interesting if they do.

And I'm sure contributions from the floor will be most welcome :D

I'll be there, grunting with my edited Ludwig Von Mises :)

OK, kind of important. I just got word that the communists have cancelled on us, and so there will be no talk in Auxilia today after all.

Very sorry, I know everyone was waiting with bated breath. And very sorry if it's caused inconvienience, I just heard myself and am a little annoyed...

Should I change the title of this page to "Communists cancel, and other stuff that's meant to be happening on campus?"

Lol, during canvassing one drunk chap at a bar thought Banquo's T-shirts (which were bright red and had VP COMMS on them) was part of a communist campaign.

    1. Accusation made.
    2. Apostrophe is put in, then:
    3. Just a minute later, Ro suddenly appears online.

    Hmmm.

Anyhow, thanks for inserting the apostrophy whoever did :D

    For those who care;

This week is Politics Week and there's gonna be a load of political things going on around campus. I've not heard a full list yet but to get you started.

Tuesday 9th March: Ruiari Quinn TD, Labour spokesperson on Education will be in the Venue at 11am. Assumingly he is here to make a speech and take questions(Leopoldbloom can probably confirm this). http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=344091304436&ref=nf

Sounds good? It's on in the SU from 20.30 onwards. Should be lovely!

Can we have a sub forum for events?
Also how does the no advertising rule apply for events?
Can we start a new thread for each events or is pimping only aloud in this thread?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,878 ✭✭✭Rozabeez

Events are posted in this thread, otherwise will be considered advertising. Whether or not we have a sub forum isn't up to me, but you can propose it in here if you want: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=461

Hi hi, it'd be great if anyone organising an event in Maynooth for politics week (or of a political/sociological nature in general) could post it on the facebook page of the Politics and Sociology society. There's a very rough schedule up as its status at the moment, but it's lacking, for example, the Ruairi Quinn talk. (edit: it's no longer missing the Ruairi Quinn talk) The page has 114 fans at the moment, so it's not a bad way to publicise to the people most likely to attend...

Shall I post a link? Here's the schedule they have so far:

I saw today that there's an intensive lifeguarding course going on in the pool on the south campus over 3 weekends soon (there's a notice to that effect posted on the wall on the way into the arts block).

Would be well worth doing if you are in any way interested, particularly as they're always looking for people to lifeguard in the pool. You get €10 an hour and it's mind-boggingly dull work (in Maynooth at least) but it would be a good way to get your foot in the door if you'd like a job there.

The next stage after lifeguarding would be water teaching and next year there should be a few teaching slots available (especially water teaching - which is when you're in the water helping learners kick their legs correctly) and then you could progress to full teacher which is a nice, well-paid (if demanding) job. So yes, it would be a good course to do. It's also highly transferable and you can work abroad with it, if you so desire :D

We've a busy week ahead of us in the Politics and Sociology Society.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) Harry Browne of DIT will be giving a talk on how the media missed the story in Haiti. That's at 6.15 in JH6. Should be interesting if you're into media and politics.

On Wednesday, Geraldine Kennedy (editor of the Irish Times) will be speaking about the freedom of the press in the Venue (SU buildings) at 12.30 (not 1 o'clock as was emailed out). If you're on facebook, here's the link with more info and guest list:

On Thursday, we're co-sponsoring a "Gig for Gaza" in the SU with the ISPC. That starts at 7.30 and should be good. This is what the line-up looks like:
