It's undoubtedly an age thing, but there's a lot of stuff being mentioned on here that I need to check out, but equally a lot of things that are, in my opinion, very average.

Try Titus Andronicus if you haven't already. Their album 'The Monitor' is an epic concept album that just begs to be listened to continually from start to finish, well in my humble opinion.

Two Gallants maybe? Similar enough to The Gaslight Anthem's gentler stuff.

Have you listened to The Hold Steady - their sound has a lot in common with The Gaslight Anthem, "Separation Sunday" or "Almost Killed Me" are their best albums IMO.

Yeah I've heard The Hold Steady before, quite like their stuff, bit lighter than Gaslight Anthem I find but decent enough all the same.

+1 on KeanSeenan's point though, from the kind of music you seem to be into, there's LOADS of great stuff from all those decades you've left out. You like Give 'Em Enough Rope, what about London Calling, Sandinista! and Combat Rock? You like REM, what about Monster? You like Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde?? And Paul Weller is the only artist of the last ten years you think is worth a mention?

Alot of Gaslight fans seem to like Frank Turner, Lucero, Social Distortion, The Bouncing Souls, Fake Problems and Hot Water Music.

They don't necessarily all sound like TGA, but like I say, they seem to appeal to their fanbase.

Ifyou haven't heard of Lucero or Fake PRoblems I highly recommend them.

I've been listening to Fennesz's Endless Summer a lot lately, it's really great stuff.

I don't know much other stuff that sounds like it. The kind of music you can just stick on and enjoy the kind of sound it makes, rather than thinking of a song and where it's going and what it means... I enjoy it the same way I enjoy things like Ligeti's Atmospheres;

A big piece of sound that you can just lose yourself in. Though I probably find Fennesz a bit more interesting, as it's mostly coming from an electric guitar being processed, and the tonality is easier to relate too, it's a bit less unsettling.

This is the kind of approach to music that I wish was taken more - music to enjoy the sound of. It doesn't have to be a great song or mean anything or make you feel a particular way - it just makes you feel.

I'm not entirely sure this is the appropriate forum for this thread given what I'll say will likely be interpreted as mainstream... but anyway if you'll allow me to plead ignorance: I'm looking to throw a few songs into the iPod and to be quite honest I haven't a clue where to start, which is where I'm hoping you good folks can help me.

They Might Be Giants' album Flood has some awesome catchy tunes ('Birdhouse In Your Soul', 'Istanbul (Not Constantinople)'), but some of the lyrics are possibly a bit off the wall for kids...or they may just appreciate them all the more...
They also have some albums specifically for younger kids...

Could i recommend the eels? Daisies of the galaxy is full of of catchy kid friendly tunes. you might want to make sure you get the kid friendly version which features the song it's a monster trucker (rather than it's a motherf**ker) , any kid would love the song I like birds. I think beautiful freak would also be a good call, it's got the song my beloved monster on it used in the movie shrek 2.

Three very good albums there...
Considering we probably have similar taste, check out The Dodo's new album, No Color...up there with (but not quite as good as) Visiter...and it has backing vocals from the lovely Neko Case...
For more downbeat folk, Pope Killdragon by Strand of Oaks from last year was brilliant in my opinion...
Any return recs from yourself while we're at it?

Not so hot on Iron @ Wine's new one Kiss Each Other Clean, keep going back to their EP with Calexico from a few years back (In The Reins). Are you a Wilco fan? This is awesome and the album You are Not Alone is beautiful.

That's the first I've heard of that Mavis Staples/Jeff Tweedy collaboration...I'm on it...

Saw both Decemberists and Iron and Wine this year...did you catch them.
The King is Dead is good: the Decemberists are a crazily consistent band...I can't listen to too much of their stuff in quick succession though...It's like eating all your easter eggs in one go...

Don't have In The Reins (yet)...I can understand why someone would be a bit disappointed in the new album...the acoustic stuff is great, but I do like the louder full band sound too...it reminds me of '70's songs and the old Elton John tapes my Ma used to play...I'm going to be kicked off this forum now...

Speaking of Wilco, have you listened to any Jim O'Rourke stuff? He has a patchy back catalogue because he's into some fairly leftfield stuff, but I heartily recommend Insignificance and Halfway to a Threeway...

@Twocandan Missed both of those gigs unfortunately. Yeah, I do like Insignificance, don't think I've heard much else by him though. Final recommendation for you any anyone else here who likes Low, never sure if they're that well know, but Retribution Gospel Choir is one of Alan Sparhawks side projects that kind of explores the rockier side of Low. More guitars, more noise but still those beautiful melodies.

Gulag Orkestar, definitely I think. It's the most accessible, IMHO. Lots of big rousing, shouty choruses. It's the Balkan gypsy-ish sound Beirut are most associated with, too, and it comes along with the Lon Gisland EP, which has a few alternate takes that are worth hearing, the version of Scenic World is better than the one on the record, for instance, and Elephant Gun is just one of my favourite songs of the last decade.

Flying Club Cup takes a while longer to get into, it's got more of a French flavour and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy & Arcade Fire) has a lot of stringsy influence on it. It's probably a better album overall but it took me a while longer to recognise it.

March of the Zapotec has it's moments, but is the weakest, IMHO.

Can't really help but In the Fishtank is a brilliant EP they did with Low, definitely recommended. And White Lunar is a double album collection of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis songs, mostly off soundtracks like The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James .. bits of it seem to keep on cropping up on the tele in various guises.
