THE THIN AIR & FIFA Records presents:

    The Vincent(s)
    Hope is Noise
    Jonny Rep
    + The Thin Air DJs

    Saturday March 7th
    Crane Lane, Cork
    Free In
    Doors: 8.30pm

The Thin Air Magazine launches in Cork! Global culture, with a local accent.

Founded in May, 2013, The Thin Air is an Irish music and culture website and physical magazine ran by an avid, ever-expanding group of writers, photographers, artists and musicians utterly passionate about the independent music and culture of the island of Ireland and much, much further afield.

Sharing a common desire to deliver, promote and share music, arts and culture news, features, articles, reviews and media content, we are a dedicated, driven and diverse bunch comprised of (only occasionally world-weary) music journalists, photographers based everywhere from New York to Sweden, go-getting film-makers, starry-eyed live reviewers and more.

March issue of The Thin Air magazine - featuring Cork psych-rockers The Altered Hours on the cover, and an Inbound piece on Cork soul crew Shookrah - will be available exclusively on the night.

    THE VINCENT(S)

Although only formed in Aug 2012, The Vincent(s) have toured extensively throughout Ireland and abroad and have a strong fan base at home and further afield, they represent something of a sea change in music that has emerged from the Ireland of recent times.

Raw recordings, noise and psych are the orders of the day. Their roots lie in surf sounds and early 90s US alt-guitar groove, which sit alongside an unmistakable Irish vocal. The band are currently in studio working on their debut long player with an expected early 2015 release.

    HOPE IS NOISE

“Hope is Noise”. From that one offhand, seemingly cryptic musing, came an unlikely spark, one that brought four childhood friends together and give them a singular purpose: music that moves you. Moves you to sing, to dance along, to get angry, to identify with it and get immersed in its world and muses.

Since bringing their body of work under the banner of Hope is Noise in late 2004, the Cork four-piece have built a dedicated following, drawn equally to their ability to construct a winning pop tune with seemingly little effort, and their incendiary, hardcore tendencies; the result is a sound that in places resonates with a more considered take on Husker Du & Foo Fighters' knack for a tune, and burns with a rage comparable to Hot Snakes or At-the Drive In. It's a seemingly odd dichotomy, but over the course of two E.P.s and two critically-acclaimed full-lengths (Applaud Friends... and Under Friendly Fire, available for download from the band's Bandcamp), it's one that has formed the basis of something very special indeed, keeping fans and critics alike, across a wide cross-section of genres, hanging on.

    JONNY REP

Jonny Rep's drummer Niall hits the drums REALLY HARD!!

He's been playing drums for quite a while now and anyone who's seen him play (and quite a few have) will know that there won't be any half-measures. He'll tell you, as will all of Jonny Rep that IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MOMENT!! Nothing else really matters.

Niall was doing this with his first band, The Shanks, even as fellow Cork bands The Sultans and The Franks took their place in the spotlight in the 90s. Around that time, Jonny Rep members Pat (vocals), Derry (bass) and Fergus (guitar) crossed countless paths with Niall as they gigged with Cork alternative popsters LMNO Pelican. Derry and Fergus went on to play in Semi, and Niall also moved on to somewhat noisier things with rockers Rulers of the Planet, where Jonny Rep's other guitarist Dave also played.

Jonny Rep came about purely because the urge to make music would not fade... Pat, Derry and Fergus had started jamming and recording again, and were a little surprised how quickly the songs came together. A band name was required so a name very similar to that of a Dutch footballer from the seventies fitted the bill, a name that was friendly and individual but slightly unfamiliar. Equally, the new music needed to go live and so it was then Niall and Dave were asked to join in the fun.

LUCHADOR GIGS & THE HOBO CONVENTION present:

    Irish beatsmith supreme
    NAIVE TED
launching new LP 'The Inevitable Heel Turn'

    plus SPEKULATIV FIKTION & JUSME + 1TBC

    THE ROUNDY UPSTAIRS
    THURSDAY JULY 23RD - 9PM
    DOOR TAX €5

Naive Ted misses kayfabe. He's mad for tea, wrestling, Wu-Tang and Steve Reich.

He is half of one man skratch duo Deviant & Naive Ted, and is at least partly responsible for an extensive back catalogue of surrealist hip-hop music. Notable releases include the trad folk skratch mess that is 'Send in the Hounds', the eponymous Vince Mack Mahon LP and the cult rap classic 'Orson Welles' with rhyme partner Sebi C.

Until relatively recently, Ted has been the silent partner in this relationship, content with his name on the credits and the occasional mention on twitter.

It was not until Community Skratch Games 2014 that Ted finally came out from the shadows to perform in public. His unique performances have since gained much notoriety in Irish music circles. In the last 12 months he has toured extensively with Rusangano Family to great acclaim, headlined at the Quarter Block Party in Cork and caused genuine mass hysteria upon his return to Community Skratch Games earlier this year.

As a wrestling fan, Naive Ted's biggest personal success to date occurred when he was commissioned to create the theme music for New Japan Pro Wrestling's Bullet Club faction. In January 2014, 35,000 people in Tokyo Dome witnessed the Bullet Club win the prestigious IWGP tag team titles accompanied by Deviant & Naive Ted's song 'Last Chance Saloon'.

He also provided several productions for MurLi's critically acclaimed 'Surface Tension' EP earlier this year - "a strong debut, built upon infectious beats" (TheLastMixedTape, Jan. 2015)

Naive Ted's debut LP, 'The Inevitable Heel Turn' has long gestated. Originally scheduled for release earlier in the year, Ted's ambition was not sated and the initial masters were scrapped and whole songs ripped up.

It emerges now as a different beast altogether, a dense kaleidoscope of muted technicolour where shy aggression sits alongside paranoid bliss. A caress in a choke hold. A nice cuppa tea in the Gaza strip.

    It's not for everybody.

"...the uniqueness in style on here makes pretty damn certain there shan’t be much in the way of imitators. Nothing out there sounds like the Flying Buttresses and in a time when rap oriented hip-hop is becoming more and more narrowly defined, such straying from the norm should get the praise it deserves."
    (State.ie, Oct. 2012)

"There's an integrity to every angle of his game"
    (mynameisjOhn on whatyouregoingtosee.com, Jan. 2015)

"...a gravestone-heavy set of boom-bap beats and live scratching...backs up his status as one of Ireland’s hip-hop heavyweights. No presumptions or ****ing around here, just some great samples from all over pop-culture, dextrous turntablism, and a command of crowd control from behind the decks comparable to the luchadors he patterns himself after."
    (Thin Air Magazine, Feb. 2015)

    LUCHADOR GIGS PRESENTS:

    Liverpool math-rockers
    ALPHA MALE TEA PARTY

    plus Cork post-metallers
    EALADHA

    Wednesday July 29th - 9pm

    Fred Zeppelin's, Parliament St - €5

    Website: http://www.alphamaleteaparty.com/

    'Droids' album stream: http://superstardestroyer.co.uk/album/droids

Alpha Male Tea Party are a band from Liverpool, but spiritually, they're a band from just outside of Liverpool. Playing hard-hitting math-inflected hyphenated-genre experimental rock, they take themselves exactly as seriously as they deserve, and they've been musically compared variously to bands like Brontide and And So I Watch You From Afar.

Since self-releasing their debut album AMTP in 2012 they've played with most of their heroes, toured the UK with the likes of Axes, Cleft and Vasquez and released the "additive-induced technicolour rampage" (Metal Hammer) Real Ale and Model Rail: The Lonely Man's Guide to Not Committing Suicide EP on Superstar Destroyer Records. Their second album, Droids is out now.

"tear-jerkingly beautiful... furious, and all in all, it's pure, 18-carat fun. Fun is never a bad thing, right?" - 8/10: Rocksound

"Describing Alpha Male Tea Party is something of a challenge, so let's settle on 'predominantly instrumental, utterly exhilarating heavy rock.'" - Total Guitar

"For all the techy terms there’s nothing clinical about their sound – they’re belting hell out of their instruments" - Metal Hammer

"their rewardingly complex racket jumps from awe-inspiring metallic proficiency to jagged post-punk gnarl; from brain-crushing heaviosity to wordless, jaw-to-the-floor anthems." - 4/5: The Skinny

"Here's a band that would surely never join any party that would have them as members... A scouse Mars Volta? Why, we wouldn't dare try to categorize them in such simplistic terms." - Prog Magazine

"it doesn’t get any better than this." - Musical Mathematics

"Sounding like At The Drive-In during a sugar rush, AMTP’s songs all hold a sense of delirious joy in the chaos being created... The jerky math-rock riffs are enjoyable, but it’s the combination of this chaos with moments of sheer bliss that bring depth and richness to the mix." - Now Then

"This is an easy recommendation to make; you need Alpha Male Tea Party’s Droids in your life. This a wonderfully unique and riff-laden record that is loaded with catchy melodies." - 9/10: UKScumScene

"The band specialize in frantic, complex tunes that change more times than is healthy and keep you guessing what is coming next." - 7/10: Powerplay Magazine

"‘Droids’ is one gut-busting plat de resistance; a near-perfect, and balanced, serving of the post-rock food pyramid." - 4.5/5: Already Heard

"upbeat and life affirming... the riffs are superb; you can feel the emotion and passion that goes into each one." - 9/10: Alt Dialogue

"Bang! Hark! There’s hammering, second degree burns and confetti, lots of confetti! Is this the rapture before me?! Probably!" - Fecking Bahamas

"darker elements represent the frustration of being a ‘droid’ and being part of mundane everyday activities. But overall it's a really powerful and uplifting record, going against that idea and celebrating ambition and wanting to be apart of something bigger." - 4.5/5: No Brainer

"odd yet impossibly catchy... this is a beast of an album. The interaction of the three members is a joy to behold." - Monster Sound Collective

"Blazing through their new album Droids, Alpha Male Tea Party prove themselves a tri-force of prog-riffing bastards." - One Beat

"I just love these guys. I love them. They make everything better. Whatever ails you, you can guarantee they'll blast it out of your head at twelvety bajillion miles an hour." - The General

"Packed with riffs, hooks and a degree of fun which is rarely expressed so sincerely, Droids hits hard and leaves a smile on your face." - 4/5: Bearded Gentlemen

"With Droids Alpha Male Tea Party have combined lightning quick, bone crunching riffs, exhilarating outro’s and atmospheric chords. After each listen there is another layer to discover" - Sloucher

"I was lucky enough to get my hands on said-album a couple of weeks back, and every moment I’ve spent since then listening to anything else has felt like a genuine waste of my dwindling capacity to hear." - Already Heard, 5 Must Hear in June

THE THIRD AND FINAL MIDWEEK MIXER
    featuring

    Tralee rapper
    YOUNG PHANTOM

    Cork alt-rock/blues/stoner five-piece
    CLEARFELL

    Cork indie power trio
    PRIAPIC PRIMATES

    Crane Lane Theatre, Phoenix Street
    Thursday July 30th - 9pm - FREE

    YOUNG PHANTOM
Mark Mavambu, one part of nascent Cork/Tralee hip-hop collective ApocalypsE, has struck out solo with a sweet new EP, available now over Bandcamp, YouTube, etc. His debut solo record comes fresh off his day job's victorious rampage through the Irish gig & festival circuit, including appearances at Body & Soul.

    CLEARFELL
Five-piece Clearfell have a weight to their work that few acts of their ilk possess, wielding a sharp QOTSA/Kyuss/Desert Sessions edge that underpins their strong traditional blues chops. Hefty and muscular, yet tipping the nod to their range of influences.

    PRIAPIC PRIMATES
Cork indie youngfellas Priapic Primates are a largely unknown quantity, but weld together indie, alt-rock and pop influences with a certain energy and bombast that can only come from youth. Well worth tipping in a little early to witness.

A blistering, high-speed concoction of math-rock, punk, hardcore, and metallic riffing, 100 Onces have more than paid their dues, doing 6 DIY US West Coast tours, two US south-east tours, two tours of the UK, and two performances at ArcTanGent (www.arctangent.co.uk); the world's largest math-rock music festival.

They have released three studio albums; '100 Once Is', '100 Once Says' and '100 Onces'

    ORDER OF THE MESS

Order of the Mess is a stoner/power Duo born in Cork, Ireland in the summer of 2013. Coming from different musical experiences, they started to play together, looking for other band mates to create a new band. They tried and played with many people, but the real fun was when they were on their own. Pure energy, heavy riffing, loop station and killing drums. There was no need to find other band mates. The band was already there.

After writing their first songs, Order of the Mess started to spread the voice within the Cork scene and on May 1st 2014, they were invited to open the show for well-known Corkonians Hope is Noise at the Pav.

After their first show, they started to get involved in the Cork music scene and, gig by gig, the energy of their live shows has intensified, creating a unique experience for them and for their audience. They're now working on their first album release, and performing new live shows in the meantime.

    STUCK ON REPEAT

Loop-pedal, multi-tracking and musical meanderings from Cork Ireland. Recently featured on the Irish Examiner's website and a growing presence on Cork's live scene.

    CAMDEN LIVE presents

CAMDEN PALACE HOTEL HALLOWEEN BALL 2015

    THE GRUNTS (Cork garage rock)
    UNDERBITE (Cork desert rock)
    BONE CHINA (Cork alternative)
    with DJ set by MK2

Camden Palace Hotel Community Arts Centre, Camden Quay
Saturday October 31st, 8.30pm til the witching hour - FANCY DRESS
    €5 in, €4 with Room101 Gigaholic card/flyer

Devilish delights, savage young screamers, rambunctious rock and mutant music await those daring enough to enter the haunted house on the quays for the Camden Hallowe'en Ball! Don your costumes and get set to go to the Twilight Zone with ghoulish garage-rockers The Grunts, demented desert-rockers Underbite, bone-chillers Bone China, and tremendous tunes from delirious disc-jocks MK2 to take you through to the midnight hour!

    THE GRUNTS:

The Grunts are a three piece indie band from Cork Ireland, their sound evokes the raw earthy innocence of early REM, Echo and the Bunnymen. 'Party Weirdo' is punk done medium rare, and there's punch and pungency in 'Crawl Right Back' and 'New York Smile'. 'Every Strange Trip' has jangly echoes of The Byrds, a floating psychedelic subtlety pervades 'Cruelest Touch', especially Liam O'Shea's vocals, and the Echo-like 'Summer Must Break' coasts along with a modest swagger.

    UNDERBITE:

Underbite began in early/mid 2014 under the moniker of Tu Me Manques. Alas, growing tired of that name, they decided to instead reform the band, refining their sound and changing the name to Underbite

Underbite was initially started by drummer, Joe Clarke, and vocalist, Matt Corrigan, later picking up Neil O' Sullivan Greene on guitar. The trio now sport a bass, a guitar and drums, and strive to attempt the biggest, broadest possible sound with so few members.

    BONE CHINA:

Alternative rock band from Cork, Ireland, featuring a blend of rock/jazz/metal and most other genres you can think of. FFO: Coheed & Cambria, letlive., Mastodon, Prize Fighter Inferno, Deftones.

    BETUNIZER:
    https://betunizer.bandcamp.com/

Having toured extensively in France, Italy, Germany and Spain, the last weekend in November marks the first visit of Betunizer to Irish shores. They will be showcasing their unique brand of discordant yet bouncey noise rock around the Island with fellow Noise hoors; Hands Up Who Wants to Die.

"Those fans of contemporary modern sounds will feel at home, just as a caveman would if he mistakenly time-travelled to one of their concerts. Betunizer sound black and white at the same time. Modern and ancestral. Enjoyment, rhythms, whipping and lashing, art." - Brit Es Magazine

HANDS UP WHO WANTS TO DIE:
    https://handsupwhowantstodie.bandcamp.com/

Hands Up Who Wants to Die are four furious messers who got together in late 2008 to make music that would capture the zeitgeist and inner city pressures of the crumbling society that surrounded them in the Dublin, Ireland. Their songs have been described as “off-kilter noise rock”, and as “socially aware slab punk with constant discordant meanderings”.

Hands Up have played many corners of the world touring Belarus, Lithuana, Ukraine, Holland, Germany & England. They have shared the stage with The Redneck Manifesto, Adebisi Shank, BATS, Don Vito, Marvin, Warlords Of Pez and many more.

    EL BASTARDO:
    http://elbastardo.bandcamp.com/album/versus-you

"After not so much a peep from the band since late 2010, the one and only EL BASTARDO, fronted by Cork stalwart Noel Lynch (KAWTICS and way too many others to list…), have just announced their return to the local gigging scene.

After earlier recordings which included a demo and split 7″ with the mighty SLOMATICS back in 2005, EL BASTARDO began recording their first album “Versus You” which after many delays and hiccups eventually found it’s way online in 2010. As to what guise the band will take shape in for this reunion/reformation, is anyone’s guess at the moment. But the band went from originally forming as a three-piece to becoming a nine (might have been ten, at one point…) headed hydra before they slipped away nearly five years ago.

Whatever the current line-up may be, it’s f**king great to hear that EL BASTARDO will be making noise again!" - Irish Metal Archive

    Luchador Gigs presents:

    UNYIELDING LOVE (Antrim grind/noise)
    KNIFEDOUTOFEXISTENCE (UK one-man noise)
    THE MAGNAPINNA (Cork hardcore/sludge)

    FRED ZEPPELIN'S, PARLIAMENT ST.
    SUNDAY NOVEMBER 22ND @ 8.30 - EARLY(ISH) SHOW
€5 at the door, €4 with flyer/Gigaholic card

    UNYIELDING LOVE:
    http://unyieldinglove.bandcamp.com

Grind/Noisecore outfit from Belfast featuring members of ABBOTOIR, STEADY DECLINE and KATABOLISIS.

Formed last autumn, Belfast newcomers Unyielding Love have certainly made people sit up and pay attention. From playing gigs with noise outfits like Wet Nurse and Knifedoutofexistence, right down to getting on the bill for the Siege of Limerick and the Dark Arts Festival in Galway. Reviewing their first gig in the Warzone Centre, Metal Ireland concluded that they “could be the most exciting band to come out of Belfast since Nomadic Rituals.”

    KNIFEDOUTOFEXISTENCE:
One-man audio terrorist Knifedoutofexistence will probably be a familiar face to anyone with an interest in the UK’s current grind scene. You might have seen him at this year’s Chimpyfest, for instance, or plying his noisy wares with Water Torture on their recent UK tour. Despite only being active for around two years, Knifedoutofexistence has already built up an impressive discography, including a number of splits with both noise and hardcore bands alike. His latest album, ‘Immaturity Of Movement’, is undoubtedly his most cohesive work yet, weaving together lengthy, hypnotic feedback loops, punishing swathes of distortion and tortured vocals to create a bleak atmosphere that manages to somehow sound simultaneously introspective and aggressive.

    THE MAGNAPINNA:
Hardcore/noise/sludge/altrock FFO: Neurosis, Kyuss. New arrivals on the Cork scene.

Hey. Does anyone have any interest in going to a table quiz in aid of Cycle against Suicide next Thursday night? It's on at 8 pm in Costigans, and I'm pretty sure it's 20 quid per table of 4! It's being held by Cork City Macra, and I've been to a few of their nights before. They normally are mighty craic!
