For motor tax purposes is a hearse only a hearse if owned by an undertaker? Or is it a large car if owned by a regular joe?

The Japanese have some fairly mad looking hearses:

(Well, this thread gone completely off on a mad tangent! :D)

Back on topic a little bit, anyone who said a hearse needs a 3 litre engine for the "torque" is talking nosense. The torque needed to roll along at walking pace, no matter how heavy the car, is next to zero. The whole cheap-automatic-large-engine-luxury-ghia argument is certainly relevant, though. The only considerable technical reason I could see is that it wouldn't have to downshift to climb an incline. It might not be in the procession's best interest to march along to "putt-putt-putt" then suddenly have it change to "brrrrrrm".

Well,as has been said it might be because of the ghia spec, but the last hearse i had a hand in scrapping, this one..

...had crappy base model seats and it definatly wasnt ghia spec, though it was built by woodhall nichloson, which seemed to be an upmarket coachbuilding company.
