Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That's a really nice post, shay. It won't be a big deal when things don't go my way, I'll be embarrassed and kinda sad for a while, then life will go on....
Not looking forward to having to do a second round of exams though. Oh well.

Just wanted to clarify. Does anyone ever find out if they got Schols before Trinity Monday? Wish my Dept. would get on with exemptions so I can step out of limbo. (Not that I couldn't now, it would just make it easier!)

Unofficially yes. Depends on the dept. You don't ask, you'll find out!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

The pharmacy dept in their all knowing wisdom has decided not to tell us abou t exemptions until the 12th of MAY.

    MAY.
The first summer exam begins on the 19th.

I'm going to have to do all the study for the summer exams anyway.

    Damn it. >:(

Some departments were getting pissed off with people with exemptions skipping all the lectures in Trinity Term. This is obviously how they've decided to counteract it. Its a bit bloody stupid methinks, but not a lot anyone can do about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

What, they were worried about 3 people skipping lectures? Out of a whole class? People who'd already proven that they worked hard at the material?

Lectures are mandatory in my course ANYWAY.

Back to the library it is then. >(

*For anyone who sat Maths and Physics Schols*

So I emailed Olivia and she told me that the results are out tomorrow. Any confirms?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

    Who's Olivia now?

By results you mean exemption notices right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 172 ✭✭Zoodlebop

    yes, I suppose I do.

    Olivia = 2S1 lecturer

If you mean exemption thingys (which I assume you do but secretly hope you mean we're actually getting our marks), then yeah, lady in the Science faculty office says the same. "Friday afternoon", to be accurate. Not specific to our course but I think it's the same for all of natural science. Good luck :)

edit - erm, didn't see ApeXaviour's reply for some reason >.>

    Aidan = HoboJesus ?

Yeah. I'm doubting they will post full results. Can't wait to get out of limbo though! Good luck to you too.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,258 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

They won't post full results. You only get them on Trinity Monday irrespective of what course you're doing. It'll just be a list of people who are exempt from summer exams.

  • Registered Users Posts: 136 ✭✭HoboJesus

In the unlikely case that any science students read this before checking the notice board, the exemptions are out!

    Good luck (again).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Aye indeed, or anyone looking to get exemptions/schols for that matter

  • Registered Users Posts: 136 ✭✭HoboJesus

Sorry to drag up a somewhat old thread but though it was better than making a whole new one.

Just wanted to say a huge good luck to anyone eligible to be hearing their name tomorrow. Take lots and lots of deep breaths, and if you don't get what you're hoping for, at least the summer's pretty much here already for you :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Indeed, and seconded. Might see you at the provost's lunch garden party thingy...

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,258 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Indeed, good luck to everyone tomorrow. I shall be in attendance anyway. Its not the nicest way to find out your results, but its certainly a memorable occasion.

Well done to everyone who got them and commiserations to those who didn't. I think there were a few boardsies who got them just can't for the life of me remember their boards names.

I know 11 I think. The only one I could have run over and hug though didn't turn up. You always here of those people but don't expect to know them.

Big congratulations to all those who got them, and commiserations to those who didn't! I actually know more new fellows this year than scholars - I know one scholar, just about.

Congratulations to all the new Scholars and Fellows. I know (of) very few of the new Scholars (I am becoming old after all!). Particular congratulations to Prof Honohan of the Department of Economics on his Professorial Fellowship.

    Congrats to all concerned.

Can't believe there were 7 TP scholars, that's nuts!

ah I recognise a few names on the fellows and scholars list, especially an old friend who was a great help to me in 2nd year biochem, I see she's back in college!

    You're kidding me?

    /goes and looks.

    -Whoa!!

Also, I know very few people on that list, but that's to be expected when I'm not around much (especially not in the library).

Congratulations to all anyway (ya big nerds!).

Yea, I'm flabbergasted by that too! And to appropriately top that, one of them got the toronto schol too. Have to say I'm very impressed.

has that ever gone to anyone outside tp/mathS?

One of my best mates got it! Apparently the Provost was so impressed by his academic results that he got down on his knees and gave him a BJ in front of everyone! It's some mad Trinity tradition dating back to when men were men and the Germans were the "Hun".

Often enough. 2007 it was a Natural Scientist, and 2005 was an Advanced Materials student (interestingly they were both female).

It was a male T.P. in 2003, 2006 and 2008. Can't remember who got it in 2004, but I personally don't recall a maths student getting it ever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 485 ✭✭AlanSparrowhawk

fair enough, but when was it for exams that weren't physics/maths?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

The guy who got it in my year (2006) has transferred into Maths now, and undoubtedly would have gotten it in maths if he had transferred earlier, but I don't think a current Maths student has gotten it recently.

Congrats to everyone who got them.

No pharmacy scholars this year. Odd- there's usually 1 or 2 out of 7/8 that go for it. There were 7 contenders this year, with 3 getting exemptions.

+1 - I've gone up a grade in annual exams before through pointing out mistakes to lecturers...

ive been there. talk to your department. the jump from 69 to 70 is huge so good luck.

It's true. Definitely approach your dept/lecturers and check all your papers, add up the marks first to make sure there weren't any simple calculation errors (it has happened). No harm like. Make sure all your questions were marked, then depending on your disposition, go through it with a fine tooth comb. It's worth that effort and intrusion for the value of the scholarship. And if it turns out they did actually make a mistake, then you do deserve it.

Are you an SF? If so, it'd be well worth trying again next year if it doesn't work out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 176 ✭✭bright

Equally, I really wouldn't get my hopes up too much as assuming you received 69% average then you need 6% in your papers. There is also the fact that in a case that close I'm sure papers are double checked when reviewing the candidate as schol worthy.

Having said all of that, it would be very foolish to not even check if error really was to blame. ;)

With different lecturers marking different questions/papers. And since it can and tends to be done across different departments, with the mark only totalled at the end, you'd be surprised how often this double checking does not occur.
