My very first insurance was 3,500 IRL punts, for 3rd party fire and theft, the cheapest I could get. The highest quote I got was 5,700 IRL punts from Quinn direct.

I was driving a 1.3 petrol bog standard Daihatsu Charade that cost me IRL 1,000.

I remember some people saying to me their mortgage payments were cheaper than my monthly insurance payments. 400 pounds per month it cost me.

That's around €4,444. But, what year was it? How old were you? What county was it? Provisional, or Full license? Main, or named driver?

Yeah but that reputation would be for someone who was in nappies when you first became interested in women

Why is it that everyone In Dublin got really fúcked for insurance during the 1998~2001. Especially the young in my time. I remember one lad in my job paying IRL 6,000 for TPFT, on a Toyota starlet. Bog standard no bells or whistles, no turbos nothing. Sean Quinn was on to a winner back then.

****box + No NCT + No need for PL licence holders to be accompanied + no penalty points system = high claims

Sean Quinn was never really "winning" because his profits were wrongly calculated. It there was money to be made in young driver insurance, even at a few grand, more insurers would have done it.

Toyota starlet was a good car back in those years, reliable and fuel efficient, so 6k is unreasonable IMO. NCT wasn't enforced back then either.

Insurers couldn't give a toss about good, reliable, efficient cars.

I will put it another way. Hardly any insurer thought they could turn a profit at ANY PREMIUM LEVEL, so the few that did offer quotes could charge what they liked. Time proved that the majority were correct to walk away
