First car in Ireland in 2007 - Cinquecento 0.9litre.
I could use my 5 years NCB earned in Poland, but even with this I still had to pay €700 for comprehensive cover with Aviva (then Hibernian). I was 25 then.

God . I remember getting insurance when living in the uk mid90's. What a shower over there. Got insurance but they wanted to increase it as my( I kid u not) Irish full international licence was not valid in the uk. They also said Ireland was not part of the eu. 1600 stag they wanted. My policy was cancelled.

Wouldn't happen nowadays. They would be on twitter. Forums.facebook and any forum site. Thank god for the internet.

I unfortunately had to start off with zero NCB even though I would have been driving around on my fathers policy in a 1998 Toyota Starlet for ~2 years beforehand. He took me off it when I went to the UK for a year, and I couldn't get the insurance companies to honor that experience as a named driver the fact there was a gap where I wasn't insured to drive at all.

Plus the stereotypical boy racer image of the Civic didn't help either.

It's a bit tricky for me; When I was still in Italy, I had the insurance under my dad's name as it was perfectly legal; System there is/was different with the policy covering the car regardless of the driver; Insurance is taken under the name of an "owner" or "main driver" who then has 100% responsibility about who drives the vehicle.

It is a practice that's even encouraged at some level, as insurance costs down there are beyond massive (most of my friends, mid 30s with what would equate to 10-12 years NCB in Ireland, pay in the region of 1100-1200 for TP only on things like a Corsa 1.4), so the only way to make families keep more than one car (and subsequently subscribe more than one policy) is to allow this trick.

When I moved here, I lost by NCB (would have been 11 years!!!) as I didn't own a car for over three years. So had to start from scratch:
