Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I love going to the classic shows and seeing all sorts of cars that would have been everywhere when I was a nipper. I even love looking at old photos and seeing what would have been run of the mill stuff, avengers, escorts, cortinas, old fiats, cherrys, bluebirds etc etc

I'd love to get my hands on a clean Datsun 120Y actually

I enjoy seeing all the cars you mentioned above for the same reason, i.e. because they were around when I was a kid and it's nostalgic. Then you see other stuff you never even heard of coz you weren't around, etc which is interesting too. What I don't find interesting at classic shows is cars that were on the road everyday not 15 years back, but hey, that's just me. ;)

ND do not waste your time polishing or "paint correcting" that car.

it will be a waste of time.

Been there, done that, bought the t shirt.

I'm not talking about bringing it to car shows now....or any time in the near future. It will be a lot older then that before it reappears on the road.

I'm not criticising in any way. It just wouldn't appeal to me at all. We're all different and the world would be an awful boring place if we all had the same tastes. ;)

We do have the same taste;) Maybe I'm just a little more varied.

I love seeing any standard older car still going in good condition and well kept for years.

Cars like these regular visitors to work...

    Why do you say that?

i'd imagine its a bad pun at fading red paint and the neverending battle :pac:

must admit i like your idea ND. if i had the room its certainly something i'd consider and i could really see in 20 odd years time the cinq being a classic. i'd also asume your doing it for the love of the car and not finantial gain, which i feel some poeple have missed the point of here.

the steering wheel looks like a seicento wheel, the cinq had a much weedier 2 spoke wheel. unless you got the fatter wheel if you specified an airbag?

Its a late model cinq I got(98) and its got an airbag so I presume that's the reason. Don't know if they were standard by then or an option.

I doubt its been changed as you can tell from the paint work(as faded as it is) and the panel fit etc that she's never had a tip. It was in the same family from new until now too, its got the owners manual/service book etc all with it.

See that's the difference, generally most people would look at the sunny and say they where rubbish when new etc etc....and they'd be right. But I look(at that one) and see a one owner car from new, with less then 70k miles, an underside and body that looks like it could still sit in a showroom, central locking/electric windows f+r which are very rare for an original Irish car and I have a huge appreciation for how well its has survived and been looked after and I think it would be shame to see a car in that condition go to a scrap yard just because its old and not a sports car or whatever.

The sentra was a barn find with only 50k on it.

I've already destroyed one immaculate old car by modifying it, by which I mean that its now almost impossible to find an example in the condition that mine was before I turned it into a track car. I'm very much into tuning/modifying...but I'd rather do it to a tattier example.

That's the reason it has that wheel. Standard on the last cars, optional till about 97ish :)

I'd agree, t cutting might not work, full respray is the way foreward :) the laquer coat doesn't look the best in places...

Looking foreward to seeing how this turns out, I just about remember sitting in a few when they were new!

Pretty sure that's not an airbag, you can just pull that centre bit off usually.

On a Seicento, yes. They had the same wheel for airbag and no airbag. Conveniently, I have one here...

You could put an Alfa wheel in there if you went down that route ;)

Almost there....mirrors and most the spoiler done today! Hard to get pics of the spoiler with the sunlight and all that but it was as bad as anywhere else on the car!

    Drivers Side Mirror:

Hard to get in at the attachment that joins the mirror to the car but I'll have a look at that when I'm installing the folding mirrors.

I done the middle bit I lost out to the rain a while back...it wasnt too bad anyway but gave it a once over.

    img1255large.jpg

Moss or some organic built up was jammed in tight so I moved the the adjustable spoiler just enough to clean it.

    img1249large.jpg

    img1250large.jpg

    img1251large.jpg

The Pivot bolt had a small bit of rust on it so i got treated with some kurust.

Hard to take Pics but this was the general condition.

I'm off at the mo, so I said I'd have a go at refurbing my alloys. Had a look at Owen's guide and have done a bit of spraying before.

Cruiser looks odd up on blocks& stands

    526cec9d.jpg

    1. Sample of the wheels - blistering and peeling abound!

    53b7231c.jpg

    56215d4f.jpg

    2. Centre caps had also faded badly since '03

    7c8977db.jpg

    3. Wheels prepped

    81106557.jpg

Centre cap primed and finished in Toyota Silver

    d4558449.jpg

    4. Wheel with one layer of grey primer... Will have to finish them tomorrow.

Not a professional job by any means, but will be better than before

Should have done it last week. I was up your side of the country and the weather was lovely compared to here.

    OH
    As already said
Get back out again and spend more time at it. I spent close on 60 hours on the Toledo so far :P

@Trailerbob - did you clear the alloyes as well?

I used sanding wheels in a drill to take the old paint off, and finished prep with 2 grades of wet/dry sandpaper by hand. Only the first step is shown in the masked picture. Took a while to prep them.
They'll get another rub down in the morning with 1000g paper, then two more coats of primer, two colour coats, and a lacquer... That's the plan anyhow!

Don't I know it's slow haha At least when you're finished you can look at the car and say "I did that" :D

Trailer bob - That's a fantastic job you've done on the wheels. Good prep is always reflected in a good finish ;)

dgt, I was thinking of turning that Polo into a convertable next time I was up! Sure feck it, it was taking up your space in your yard. :P

Can't wait to see you finished with your 406 though! Such a difference it will make for your long haul journeys. :D

Edit: The only thing I can see that pipe doing is a interesting way of connecting 2 cylinders together. Will it kill an engine or do something silly to it? I think it could increase pressure, but that's can't put it into words.
