Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Raw Mushrooms

This is an odd question but Google gives mixed answers and I would like to get an opinion from Boards on this. Is eating raw mushrooms bad for you or is it actually beneficial to your health? I would have assumed that considering the fact that they are fungi it would be difficult to digest though recently I have seen people saying they are eating them raw with their meals. Also, I'm talking in regards to the regular mushrooms that are available in supermarkets such as white button, portobello etc.

    Any help appreciated :)

Mild to severe hallucinations are to be expected.

No idea if it is good for you or bad for you, but I often eat raw mushrooms - I luv 'em in a salad!

I often eat them raw too. They taste nice.

My mother nearly had a heart attack that I'd poison myself.

    But I'm grand

Lightly grilled mushrooms are a delight.

Interesting to see that people eat them raw so I'll take it that it's not harmful, I might have a try and see for myself if I feel any different.

They have a sort of brittle texture that is sort of intriguing, when raw.

Not poisonous, but the taste, smell and texture of mushrooms changes quite a lot when cooked.

They're lovely, fresh picked button mushrooms. I do like them, but you'd want to be careful where you buy them, they're best on the first day on the shelf. Chopped and straight into a salad, with a dressing and yum!

Ate a load of them in a field last September...forgot where I parked my Eskimo though I so had to skip home!!

Turns out I don't live in Portobello!

Some mushrooms contain enzymes (or something like that) that makes you feel like vomiting, AKA emetics. If they have these some of them can be "killed off" or neutralised by cooking.
Mild to severe hallucinations are to be expected.
Many people will get sick from eating magic mushrooms and they usually put it down to them being from dirty fields, covered in manure, or picking wrong ones by mistake or the actual drug taking effect. But mainly its supposed to be these enzymes. They will get sick eating ones grown in sterile labs too which rules out the previous suspects. Some will not cook as they believe it will degrade the active ingredients.
