    From my earlier post in this thread;

The change from 13dB loss to 22dB loss is massive. Every 3dB (or 6 depending on whats being calculated) is double the loss. That's 3x the loss for cheaper wire, bloody massive.

True, suppose my point isn't to use the default cable dB loss to calc cable distance

My point is that the cable can't be that bad.

Just got Eircom's efibre installed (up to 50 Meg option). About 400 metres from the cabinet.

So this is what I am getting on an Eircom E-Fibre Wired Connection? How does this fair? Should I be getting more. I had some problems initially but it seems to have settled down, though wifi connections is up and down and somwhere around the low 20s it seems

You should be getting about 48Mb/s on the Speedtest result. You're pretty close to the cabinet judging from your attainable net data rate.

Are you subscribed to Eircom's eVision?

    Hi,
    No not subscribed to evision.
I did approx 10 speedtests one after the other last night (wired) and got varying download speeds from 23mb to 48mb. Would there be any reason for the wild fluctuations?

    Hello all,

I thought it would be benificial for us to build a database of VDSL line stats and speeds we are obtaining.

I think it could help some people establish if their lines are of poor quality and try and get something done about it.

Its also a bit of fun if you are into that kind of thing.

For the sake of keeping things tidy I propose we could set out the data as follows. I will use a real site I look after as an example and will be adding more when I get time.

    7ugkiZv.jpg
    2775469701.png2775473005.png2775476037.png

    Approximate distance to Cabinet = 700 - 800 Meters
Connection to the Modem = 50cm Cat6 (single pair used) from line point of entry into building to NTU.

Using http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php as a rough guide my line stats suggest I am 1484 Meters away from the cabinet......

I think there is something wrong with the line somewhere.

its not line of sight distance to cab the cables run along roads. 1484 m from cable would suggest best speeds are 12mb/1mb to 15mb/3mb

if your are getting 23mb/6mb your profile is set at 25mb/7mb (800m is about right for 25mb/7mb)

tests done over wifi are invalid tests because the wifi speed varies during the test and distorts the test result. also wireless g devices will slow down over all wifi speeds to at best 25mb. wireless n devices rarely get better than 45mb.

Could be due to a number of factors, if the dB is shifting it could be due to water ingress into the cabling between you and the cab. If the upload/download speeds are adjusting it could just be down to Eircom's service, congestion on their network, congestion on the server you selecting for the speed test.

Anyone else's line attenuation increase all of a sudden?!
Mine went from 13.8 to 20.2!

Still getting my usual speed of 47 Meg down but my attainable line speed went from 95 to 63!

Anyone know what might of caused this?

Could be more people connecting to the cabinets as the companies sign up more people in your area to VDSL.

Or water/rain getting into the cabling from cab<->house

A CAT 6 cable is just an ethernet cable. An ethernet cable is what you use to connect your computer to the modem. Another type of cable is used to connect the modem to the wall socket which i presume is already in place.

I think you can. I think they put you on the 50Mb package like they did with this guy because you both have similar stats.
