From looking at the 39/A timetable it seems that the few buses that will run this modified route will still involve running down Shelerin Road and (presumably) into Hartstown ans Huntstown to the Blanch Centre. It's almost as tortuous as the existing route (with the exception of Clonsilla Village which can get nasty). The whole of Blanch needs a proper local service and until DART comes this way (and as in any normal country the majority of buses are deployed as feeders into the faster train network) the 39 should have some backup in the shape of decent direct bus services from the greater Blanch area to the city. The likes of Ongar should have a bus that runs straight down the new road and north along Blanch Rd South to the town centre but then running straight out to the village (ie, not doubling back to get to the Clonsilla Rd.

Really of course, the priority should be the interconnector to allow these medium/high density developments along the Maynooth and Northern lines (and of course Adamstown!!) to really work and provide a decent quality of life to the poor feckers who work in town but can't afford an apartment there.

Is it possible that DB may have made a mistake. The rás finishes in Skerries and AFAIK does not go through Balbriggan. Perhaps they intended to say that the 33/33A will not serve Skerries?

so, does it go to sandymount then to vincents, ucd and back to donnybrook garage?

if thats the case it's adding a very circuitous extension onto an already very long and slow route.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 364 ✭✭Xylophonic

It all seems a bit too long nwo the route. The journey time was at 70/5 minutes to complete when it operated from Sandymount to Palmerstown. I now suspect it will be near 90 and about 120 in the peak!!

I saw an 18 parked up at St. Johns Church (in Sandymount but not in the village) recently. Was it terminating there for a while?

Yes, look at the link above which still shows the current not the new timetable. It was extended to there in Nov last year.

Can't see a great deal of sense in this extention, although it will mean a big increase in buses from Sydney Parade station to Belfield.

Is it just me or were there more departure on the 18 in the past?

Jesus I'd say that is one hell of a trip to take from Palmerstown to the Garage, I'd want a cup of tea after that!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 629 ✭✭✭enterprise

The main reason for the route extension is that the drivers change over and take their breaks at Donnybrook Depot.

This extension therefore gets rid of dead ety mileage and improves public transport from Sydney Parade to UCD!

If you think Dublin bus would do anything to make the driver's life easier your living on a different planet, the reason it was extended was because the residents of D4 dont like buses terminating outside there houses, it makes the place look untidy.

Running the route all the way to the garage is not for the benefit of the drivers, it means the company do not have to pay fuel duty on the out-of-service runs to/from the terminus.

  • Registered Users Posts: 540 ✭✭✭spareman

Really? Would it be more expensive for the fuel they use to run the bus the extra 2 miles up via belfield or pay the Vat on the fuel they use from sandymount? There are still buses driving to/from Old lucan road out of service.

Finally, a bus straight from my house to UCD.
Even if it does take longer than the 2 bus route, I usually have a 10 minute walk between buses, so overall I'm a happy camper. :)

NEW RAIL SCHEDULE FROM 14TH JANUARY - Please check times before travel by Corporate Communications

NEW RAIL SCHEDULE FROM 14TH JANUARY 2007

Customers advised to check times before travelling

Range of service improvements across network

Iarnród Éireann has advised customers that a new timetable schedule will come into effect on Sunday 14th January 2007.

Customers on all services, Intercity, DART and Commuter, are advised to check their train times before travel, as some departure times have changed, including a number of earlier departure times of existing services.

Full timetable details are available online at our homepage www.irishrail.ie , automated talking timetable at LoCall 1890 778899, or from your local station.

For the fourth year in a row, the record investment programme in our railway, funded by the Irish Government under Transport 21 and the European Union, will deliver direct benefits to commuters on Intercity and Dublin area services. The new schedule begins on 14th January 2007.

    Service improvement highlights include:

Cork-Dublin Intercity services – Hourly service, brand new fleet

A new hourly, clockface timetable service in each direction is being introduced on the Cork-Dublin route. With the new €117 million CAF Intercity fleet, the service will bring customers greater choice, capacity, quality and comfort than ever before.

Services will depart Dublin Heuston every hour on the hour from 07.00hrs to 21.00hrs, and will depart Cork Kent at 5.15hrs, and then every hour at half past the hour from 06.30hrs to 20.30hrs.

Sunday services will also see increased frequency on the Cork-Dublin route.

Limerick-Dublin – Thirteen services each way daily

Limerick Intercity services will also see a significant increase in frequency, from ten services each way daily to thirteen services each way daily, which now includes six direct services to Limerick City.

NEW SUNDAY SERVICES FOR KILDARE LINE COMMUTERS – IMPROVED SUNDAY SERVICES FOR MAYNOOTH LINE COMMUTERS

From 14th January, scheduled Sunday commuter services will be introduced on the Kildare commuter line for the first time, serving all stations on the route.

Services will operate five times each way, at approximately two hour intervals, giving commuters a regular Sunday service between the city centre and the stations of Kildare, Newbridge, Sallins, Hazelhatch, Clondalkin and Cherry Orchard. Dublin Bus and Luas services will provide onward connection at Heuston to the heart of the city centre. A new station at Adamstown will open in April 2007.

In addition, Maynooth commuter line frequencies will improve further, with hourly services operating on the half hour from 09.30hrs to 18.30hrs from Dublin Pearse, and services operating approximately every hour from 10.30hrs to 19.30hrs from Maynooth (departure times vary slightly).

MODERN FLEET PROVIDES NEW, INNOVATIVE LOCAL SERVICE IN MAYO

A new local service will begin operation, linking some of the Mayo’s major towns courtesy of modern railcars operating on the Ballina branch line.

The existing operation of a Ballina to Manulla Junction service connecting into Westport to Dublin trains is being extended to provide a local service.

Modern railcars, which are replacing old locomotive-hauled carriages on the line, will continue to connect into Westport-Dublin services, but will also operate return connections to provide a Ballina-Foxford-Castlebar-Westport service three times each way daily. These railcars will be accessible to mobility-impaired customers.

The new service, among other new links provided, connects two hub towns under the National Spatial Strategy: Ballina and Castlebar.

DUNDALK COMMUTERS – ADDITIONAL PEAK SERVICE EACH WAY

Dundalk commuters receive a boost from 14th January, with an additional peak service in the morning and evening peak.

A 7.03hrs departure will operate from Dundalk to Connolly Station, and the 16.50hrs Connolly to Belfast service will now serve Dundalk for the first time, an express service for commuters bringing them home in a mere 54 minutes.

This gives Dundalk commuters a choice of five services in both the morning and evening peak.

EXTRA SERVICES EACH WAY FOR ENFIELD AND KILCOCK

Commuters in Enfield and Kilcock will benefit from two new services in each direction daily, city bound in the morning (Enfield 6.45hrs, 9.14hrs, Kilcock 6.53hrs, 9.22hrs) and from Connolly in the evening – the 18.00hrs and 19.05hrs from Connolly serving both stations.

EXTRA EVENING PEAK SERVICE FOR SALLINS AND NEWBRIDGE

Sallins and Newbridge commuters will have an extra service in the evening peak from Heuston at 17.25hrs, a key time for commuters on the Kildare line.

KILDARE ROUTE PROJECT WORKS – IMPACT ON SERVICES

In 2007, Iarnród Éireann will commence physical work on the Kildare Route Project, which, through four-tracking the rail line between Cherry Orchard and Hazelhatch, will allow the frequency of commuter services on the line to dramatically increase.

As works will be taking place adjacent to the existing line, speed restrictions have been put in place to allow this work to proceed safely. As a result, these restrictions have been incorporated into journey times on all commuter and Intercity services operating in the Kildare-Dublin area to accommodate these essential improvement works. Some service cancellations will be necessary on some Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings for the duration of the project.

LATER EVENING SERVICE FOR MAYNOOTH LINE

Maynooth line commuters will benefit from the later departure of the final service from the city centre to Maynooth, now leaving Pearse Station at 23.10hrs.

GOREY COMMUTERS – NEW MORNING PEAK SERVICE

A new 06.00hrs Gorey to Dublin service is to operate, in addition to the existing 06.45hrs service. The new service gives an additional choice to commuters from Gorey and the Co Wicklow stations of Arklow, Rathdrum, Wicklow, Kilcoole, Greystones and Bray.

Docklands Station – more services for West Dublin from 12th March

Details were also announced of services for the new Docklands Station, which opens on 12th March 2007, three months ahead of schedule.

Major increases in peak and off-peak frequency will be delivered with the introduction of Clonsilla to Docklands services, to complement the existing services on the Maynooth line to Connolly and other city centre stations.

The new Clonsilla to Docklands services will mean the busiest and fastest growing communities on the route – Clonsilla, Coolmine, Castleknock and Ashtown - will have one of the best commuter services in the Greater Dublin area. Peak services to and from Clonsilla will operate as follows:
AM PEAK – FROM CLONSILLA	PM PEAK – TO CLONSILLA

    6.35HRS (C)	8.13HRS (P)*	15.59HRS (P)*	17.37HRS (P)*
    7.00HRS (D)	8.20HRS (D)	16.20HRS (D)	18.05HRS (C)
    7.15HRS (P)	8.32HRS (P)	16.34HRS (P)*	18.08HRS (P)*
    7.37HRS (C)	8.45HRS (D)	17.10HRS (D)	18.30HRS (P)
    7.45HRS (D)	8.55HRS (C)	17.15HRS (C)	18.45HRS (D)
    7.52HRS (P)	9.17HRS (P)	17.28HRS (C)	19.00HRS (P)
    8.05HRS (C)	9.25HRS (C)	17.38HRS (D)	19.20HRS (D)

Bold= new services from 12th March.
AM Peak times denote departure time from Clonsilla.
PM peak times denote departure time from city centre.
    (P)= service operates to/from Pearse.
    (C)= service operates to/from Connolly.
    (D)= service operates to/from Docklands.
*= service operates to/from stations south of Pearse.

While directly serving stations from Clonsilla in, the new services will also free up capacity on existing Maynooth line services.

Iarnród Éireann is already Europe’s fastest growing railway, with 14% growth in 2006. These new service improvements will ensure the company will expand still further.

In 2008, there will be more progress, as the introduction of the new Intercity railcar fleet is completed; the Cork-Midleton line is opened; and Phase 1 of the Western Rail Corridor from Ennis to Athenry is opened. With the support of the Government under Transport 21, the rail network will play the fullest possible role in meeting the transport needs of the country and its communities.

NOTICE TO DUNDALK CUSTOMERS RE: 16.50 CONNOLLY TO BELFAST SERVICE by Service Planning, Northern and Eastern
    11th January 2007

Information for Dundalk customers re: 1650hrs Connolly to Belfast service.

From 15th January coming, our 16.50hrs Connolly to Belfast Enterprise service will stop additionally at Dundalk, at 17.43hrs.

We have been able to introduce this enhancement for Dundalk, following discussions with Translink with whom we jointly operate Enterprise services. Whilst the service will now call at Dundalk, we have had to introduce demand management measures to overcome concerns that the service may become oversubscribed, thus disadvantaging longer distance cross-border customers.

The system we have chosen to manage demand is to issue boarding passes, on application, to regular customers.

With that in mind, in December last we posted information in Dundalk station advising customers of the plan to introduce the Dundalk stop in the service, and invited applications for boarding passes. Having received more applications than available accommodation, we have now issued the boarding passes in favour of annual ticket holders. Indeed, all annual ticket holders who applied for such passes have now been issued with them.

Once the new service comes into operation on Monday next we will be assessing the utilisation of the boarding passes and if sufficient accommodation on the train is available to enable us to issue further passes, we will be pleased to do so.

Customers who wish to apply for boarding passes can complete application forms at Dundalk or Connolly Stations.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation with these arrangements.

Westport/Ballina to Athlone - resignalling project - services affected April 16th to May 4th 2007 by Corporate Communications

A major re-signalling project on the Westport / Ballina route will be commissioned on 5th May 2007.

The project involves the replacement of the current mechanical signalling system by a state of the art computerised signalling system on the Roscommon to Westport and Ballina section of the track.

This work is part funded by the Irish Government under Transport 21 and the European Regional Development Fund.

To complete this commissioning, trains between Westport / Ballina and Athlone will be suspended during the period - 16th April to 4th May 2007.

Alternative Bus transport will be provided between these Stations.

Normal services will operate between Athlone and Dublin. The following are the delays and alterations to Timetables.

    WESTPORT / BALLINA – DUBLIN

Departure times are advanced at all Stations between Westport / Ballina and Athlone by 30 MINUTES. A Bus connection is provided to Athlone Station to connect with onward train to Dublin. (Please note times are advanced at all stations Monday to Sunday included.) Substitute Buses will operate for all services between Westport / Ballina and Athlone until from April 16th to May 4th 2007.

    DUBLIN – WESTPORT / BALLINA

Passengers will be transferred from Athlone to their destination by Bus. This will result in a delayed arrival of approximately 20/30 minutes.

A revised timetable is available from all Iarnród Eireann Stations on the Route, or by phoning 1850 366222 or log on to www.irishrail.ie

This work represents a total investment of €30 million on the Westport / Ballina – Dublin Route.

    Mobility Impaired Customers

Intending passengers who have mobility impairment or who have special needs should contact their local Station Manager in advance.

We wish to apologise for delays and inconvenience caused by this essential work.
