yea appears you dont get far with a 2:2 from DIT so took a year out did a masters last year so tried again last year still nothing so now have a 2:1 master so this is hopefully the lucky time

Im applying for tax. Have a 2.2 corp law degree and a 2.1 llb degree. Also doing part 1 of the cta exams myself so hoping that might balance my 2.2 degree. Fingers crossed anyway!

I did a work placement with them and was offered a position - I didn't have to apply or interview for it.

Thanks! I'm a bit freaked, as I'm applying for tax everywhere.

I think there are less places in tax than, say, audit, so it's more competitive. Am I right?

The work was fine, the long hours were expected - It was more the culture in the place. I don't know how to explain it - It's like you constantly do the best you can but it's never good enough, and over time it just started to wear me down! I'm sure there are plenty of people strong enough for a job like that but I know myself enough to know that maybe a big firm like that isn't for me.

Also I was in a very specific area of audit, which I would be returning to should I go back, and having spoke to others in the firm there is very little room for movement - I would be worried about my career afterwards to be honest after being pigeon-holed so much.

I'm not saying everyone will hate it - I'm just saying I did, and would encourage people to thoroughly research what they're getting in to.
At the end of the day a job is a job and I still want to do accountancy, so if nothing else comes up I will do my training there, because the qualification will be worth it in the end.

think from looking over the thread you are looking at a 2:1 so you should be ok with that.

Yea there is always less places for tax eg BDO limerick took on 7 audit last year and only 1 tax

I have a 2.1 degree and am doing a pg dip in the area at the moment. Plus a good LC, and a B grade in Higher Maths.

I'd be aiming for Dublin, so maybe the competition won't be so fierce.

I've actually heard that the regional offices of the various firms are far more competitive to get into because there are fewer places and a lot of people don't want to live in Dublin.

what's the social side of things like? Did you build any good friendships during your time there?

Social side was great, made a lot of friends, that's the biggest plus side of the big 4 I think... lots of people around your own age to socialise with and who are all going through the same thing as you.

Just my two cents but from what I can gather Tax is a hell of a lot harder to get into (especially with the big 4). From what I can gather they generally look for >500 LC points as a standard but they do make some exemptions in some cases. They view good results from that and your degree as a correlation to being able to pass your Cap/Fae exams.

Nah it's not unfortunately. You've got to remember how many people apply for these positions and the Big 4 will be able to pick and choose who they want so their standards are always going to be high. You will find a few people that don't have the 500 or so points but you will find the majority will have it.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Obviously in a service line with less places, supply and demand will push the standards upwards.

But say two people rock up to interview. Boths with 2.1s, one with 510 points and one with, say, 470.

The 470 candidate does a far better interview, shows more aptitude in testing, and has a deeper understanding in general than the 510 points candidate. Who would you hire?

As for looking for consistency in exam performance. All the service lines require that, tax isn't a special case.

Ah I didn't mean it like that though. Obviously they are going to take on the person that fits the job best.

I meant it as in there are always less positions available in tax that you will find that the average standard is higher than in audit. That's where exam performance does come in. They will interview a lot less people for tax than audit and so the firms "filters" will be set higher. So it's going to be harder to get an interview but if you do get an interview you have every chance of getting the job.

Minimum requirements for LC results can be frustrating and disheartening.. 425 for E&Y, 400 for BDO and Smith&Williamson

I've really worked my butt off since I started college 1:1 1st 2nd and 3rd year and expecting 4th year to be the same.. and have 6 months work exp in a chartered accountancy firm.. know its only 6 months but still

Wasn't expecting my crappy 250 LC points to come back and haunt me now ugh

On a different note:
If an applicant actually had no LC results and got into college through an interview or whatever... How would such an applicant be filtered through the firms' software ?? Would they just go in the "rejected" section straight away like ? How would an applicant get around this issue ?

From talking to all of the big 4 at a graduate fair recently they said that all applications are looked at manually and all will be taken into consideration.

I just got a call for an interview at Grant Thornton. Has anyone any experience with them? Or any idea of the type of questions I might get asked? I'm getting interviewed for the Corporate Audit department.

Not sure about the others but there's no computer screening for EY as that's what they've been saying at their mlikround presentations os all apps are read by the team.

LC points are flexible; doesn't matter if you don't meet them. My friend did their summer internship there and didn't get 425 but they got their grad offer so they're joining next Sept in Audit. There's a box you can fill in if you don't meet it so you can talk about getting good results in college - that's more important

They probably got their grad offer only because they worked there as in intern ? So if they didn't get an internship there and applied normally their LC results might've been a lot more of a factor ??

I'm attempting to complete my EY application which I most definitely didn't submit (and they are not saying it's a completed submission either) but I can't see where to edit. It says "To modify some specific information, click "Edit" next to the relevant section." but nothing is clickable on the page. There isn't even a submit button anywhere!

Its a hard application alright. I had to submit mine yesterday and got my rejection email this morning! Wasn't the nicest thing to wake up to!

They actually rang me today to prompt me to finish my application! I presume they were doing that with anyone who had an unsubmitted, incomplete application? Anyway, they kinda ticked me off there so mleh. It was nearly complete too but there not much I can do if I can't even finish and send the dratted thing! Thought I would try filling it from scratch but you can't seem to start an application now even though the closing date hasn't passed!

you in nuig yeah. me too, I only got to apply to Deloitte cause it was the most straight forward, had great intentions on Sunday morning of applying to all four. the applications are dam time consuming, think I left it a little too late ha. still havnt heard anything from Deloitte anyway.

Anyone know if the big four will be recruiting again this year? for 2014 start..

Got it submitted. I have two to submit next week, and one in Nov, and then I'm done. So glad to have the bulk of them submitted now, it's tiring! I actually hope I *don't* get interviews for them all (I doubt I will

), as that would just be exhausting!

Maybe try a different browser? In my email this morning they said how I didn't match their strengths so obviously they are looking particular answers!

Thats a bit rough, very quick reply saying about your strengths. don't worry about it man, there meant to be the worst of the big four anyway.

didn't meet the leaving cert requirement for maths had a b1 ord level. So maybe they are filtering on that basis?

only got an email from Deloitte saying "currently reviewing all applications"

application was a bit half arsed anyway tbh and it was the only one I got in.. hoping they all do another round in the new year,, I shall be ready

They usually do, I think. Because some people might get offered multiple training contracts and, well, they can only accept one. So spaces become available again!
