Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Oh hello log! I see you've been abused in my absence while I've been busy doing an honest day's work. I better get the vigilantes out before you're banished to the 'inapproriate for public viewing' forum. I'll catch the culprit in no time, from what I've seen it lives up to it's username! :p

    Monday 10th January
Rest / Strength & Stretching exercises. I had my first encounter with the foam roller that I bought before Christmas :o and dear lord did it hurt! Why oh why…

    Tuesday 11th January
Met up with Menoscemo, Ainman and Mithril on the track in UCD for some intervals – 6 X 800m. I’m a bit of a specialton with the Garmin though and I only discovered the lap button after the first 2 intervals.
    Pace for 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 was something like 7.36 / 7.42 / 7.45 / 7.35 (I think…there are lots of random numbers showing up on the summary because I went to town pressing buttons last night )
All told (including warm up and cool down) I did 5.77 miles (just under the planned 6 – I really should have jogged another lap of the track to finish!)

    + physio homework...ouch ouch ow!!

Hopefully I’ll get out for a few easy miles tonight. Although after legging it out of work yesterday evening I think the boss is gunning for me

Keep working with the foam roller, before you know it, it won't hurt anymore and it will help greatly with keeping IT Band issues and others at bay.

Are you suggesting I use my foam roller as a weapon? I don't think it'll fit in my handbag...Might just stick with the Mace spray.

    Wednesday 12th January
    - 4.47 miles - Av Pace 9.14.
I probably did this a little too fast for me and with Waterford on Saturday. I was shattered after work and it took a push to get me out. Felt good though once I got going. Did the second mile the fastest in 8.53 which is strange because that was the hill...can't complain though I suppose.

Almost had an entertaining collision with some guy at a blind corner - he would have anhiliated me at the speed he was going. Luckily I was taking it easy enough am so aware with amazing reflexes, I was able to side step just in time. I definitely ruined whatever thought process he was enjoying though

Then I called down to a friend 'for a walk' all decked out in my hat and scarf and runners (just to humor her) expecting an evening on the couch with tea and biscuits (because that is what invariably happens when we decide to go 'for a walk') but someone had 'get fit and lose weight in 2011' plans and she walked the legs off me for a good hour!!

Think I'll leave it until Waterford now. Had planned a few easy miles tomorrow but my legs are pretty tired. If I go out, the most I'll do will be two 10min miles to stretch the legs.

No physio exercises tonight. Shame on me :o

I think I'll aim for a very easy 5 on Sunday alright so hangover permitting I'll head over to the park and meet yee. Not that I should have a hangover though seeing as I gave up boozing for January...

Cheers Ruby, not gonna get too worked up about it. The legs are pretty wrecked today so I'll leave them be until Saturday and hopefully there'll be enough in them to get me around. Should be a bit of craic anyway.

God am I really saying a 13.1 mile should be a bit of craic? What's happened to me?!

When the gun goes off and the adrenaline starts pumping and you realise you should in fact have popped to the bathroom that one last time, everything will fall into place. (By 'fall into place' I mean ride up into the unknown on you so that you'll have to have your shorts removed with a tweezers)

    Have a great race! :D

There's nothing lowly about getting out there and running 13.1 miles while everyone else is watching tv in bed.

You're going to love this race, believe me! Just don't tie your shoelaces together and remember - Pain is weakness leaving the body.

    Good Luck.

Woke up in Waterford to hideous weather conditions so I pressed snooze once or twice or ten times hoping that each time I opened my eyes that the winds would have blown the rain clouds away – not a hope!

In short (because I still haven’t got the energy to engage my brain to write a lengthy or interesting report) it wasn’t my day. Physically, I felt ok (not amazing) but alright. Mentally, it just wasn’t there. I probably went out a little fast but I felt great and was enjoying it for the first 4 miles. Miles 5, 6 and 7 were tough and probably the worst terrain and weather of the race. The 2 hour pacers passed me just over the halfway point and I just got this horrible sinking feeling which remained for pretty much the rest of the race. I managed to stick with them for the downhill mile but my brain had given up on me by the time we turned back towards Waterford. For some reason all I could think about was Connemara and how much worse it was going to be and that was really giving my confidence a battering. The 2 hour pacers were savage though –despite me shouting “I’m not in your group, I’m only out for a run!” they came back and insisted I stick with them at that stage. They were offering people gels and water and to carry jackets – really sound guys so big thanks to Maire and Ian. I even got complimented on my running style – apparently it’s very ‘energy efficient’...I expect that’s a very nice way of saying ‘lazy’. I knew that once I got to 10 miles it was mostly flat home so I found a bit of something to get me there. I thought the finish line was going to be at the gates to the RSC so I put the foot down with a belt of energy that. And then I realised I had about 300m more to go...Ugh. I could see the seconds counting down on the clock and rounded the last stretch thinking I still had the 2 hours but the wind hit me like a truck at the turn and I knew it was game over.

    Garmin Summary: 13.14miles - 2.00.19

Met up for a few drinks with Menoscemo, RK, Ainman, Brianderunner, and jcsmum after – great running out of the lot of them. :) Fair play lads! I had one cup of tea / pint of water too many...the drive home was dreadful!

Obviously not the worst time considering the conditions and the fact that this time last year the New Year’s resolution was to do a HM by the end of 2010 but definitely the most mentally trying run I’ve ever done. There were some serious emotions running through me for most of it! Anyway I only expected to be able to run it as a training run so I won’t complain.

Feel alright today – bit of pain in the lower back so I really need to work on the core strength for the longer runs. Gonna join the group for a very easy 5 miles at 1 and then have a good ole stretch in front of the TV for the evening:D

I was having the same feeling yesterday in the run and then my other main thought was..."forget this I am never getting off my couch again! I was quite happy for 35 years never to run, I can go back to that!!" :D

:D You did GREAT! Well done on the time.

    Claralara,

That was a hellish race due to awful conditions, you said your heart wasn't in it and you pulled a 2 hour race out of it? Stop being so hard on yourself.

Everyone finishes their first half wondering how in the name of Jaysus they'll manage to double the distance but you have 12 weeks (that's 3 months;)) to get there.

You ran a very respectable time in terrible weather, and then went out for 5 miles with us today!
    Well done!

claralara, I woudn't be too hard on yourself to be honest as you said yourself you were going to do the run as a LSR not a race.

The conditions were awful and still as you said yourself you kept with the 2hr pacers, atleast you know now what you need to work on for Connamara and its better you know this now then on the 11th April.

btw I don't think you were the only one who thought the finish was at the gates of the RSC :pac:

well done claralara, great persormance for your first half in those conditions. Being able to dig in and keep going when you dont feel good is one of the hardest lessons we learn. You can use this experience the next time you are feeling bad in a race, just tell yourself you got through Waterford you can get through anything. It's days like Saturday that will stand to you way more than an easy race.

claralara I am so happy for you.

A 2hr half is amazing. And in those conditions! Well done you.

    Keep it up!

Cheers for all those posts guys – I’ve recovered now without resorting to putting my head in an oven which is a good sign. I think getting over the mental challenge is the best achievement for me out of that one. :)

On another note - as much as I’d like to keep stum, I must say that it wasn’t my first Half… it was my third (the first two of which I actually trained for…)! Kildare was my first last May which I did in 2:04:54 on a bandy ankle which subsequently had me off my feet for 6 weeks. Then I did the Adidas Half in September in 1:58:49 – courtesy of Meno and RQ!! Waterford was my first hard run since South America, bad weather and Christmas beat me down; it felt a million times tougher than the other two HM’s put together! I think most of my issues were around the fact that I couldn’t get Conn out of my head and the thoughts of having to run Saturday twice back-to-back! Anyway I think I’m over it now – time to move on and ‘enjoy’ the rollercoaster for the next 12 weeks!!

Dublogic my goal is complete Connemara in one solid physical and emotional piece (hopefully in less than 5 hours!) – a 3.45 wouldn’t be on the cards for me even on a pancake course in the foreseeable future. Are you hoping to do a 3.45? Is it your first? Best of luck with your training - the bad days are the most rewarding...;) From the mouth of experience!

"Are you hoping to do a 3.45? Is it your first?" This will be no. 4 (Dublin, Madrid & Berlin) and training on a 3:45 schedule however I'm not too worried about time. I focus on time in my training as it motivates me (I use the virtual partner on my garmin).

Was looking to do 3:45 for Berlin but enjoyed the crowd and just looking around at Berlin (had never been before) so much I stopped looking at my watch and finished at 3:56 which I was happy with.
