Well I took the plunge on Friday. Must say the procedure was nearly painless...a bit of tugging and a slight pinch for the needle but all in all the anticipation was worse. Took it easy over the weekend and didn't have much pain at all just the feeling that I had been poked and prodded a little. Feet up for 2 days and then a little more activity on Sunday. On Sunday noticed a bruise and swelling started. This got worse over the subsequent days and now I have a small dark purple and red patch on the right above the incision and the boys have swollen to I suppose half their size again up with a dull ache (like a kick in the jewels) and slight pain in the abdomen, also slight sharp pain where my leg is rubbing the stitches. Nothing major but uncomfortable and not great to walk any distance.

Anyone have a similar experience and when will it calm down, was so painless on Friday I had visions of going hiking this weekend.....that's off the cards! Any thoughts appreciated.

It's been three months since the op so I sent off the second sample there last Thursday. Obviously keen to get the all clear, would anyone (who got the job done in donnybrook) be able to suggest how long it took to get the results back??

I had it done in the same places and it only took about a week after the second sample was sent as far as I can remember.

EDIT - Sorry, I just noticed the date on your post. I presume you got the results by now!

Hello my husband is considering the vasectomy. Could you please recommend a good clinic? We are in Carlow but willing to travel within 100 km. Thanks in advance.

I had mine done(at the second attempt) at the molesworth clinic in Dublin. Couldn't recommend it high enough. I had 0 issues after or since (5 months now)

Before any man gets a vasectomy they should google "post vasectomy pain syndrome".

I'd be careful in case you change your mind. It might be completely out of the question for you to have kids right now but people can change a lot as they get older

Quick question re: travelling after the procedure.

I've agreed to moving my snips forward to September 23rd, which is nice. Only realised that I'm flying London to Dublin on the 24th, and back the 25th. I'll be driving Dublin to Drogheda and back on the 25th.

Even assuming I get some of the worse side-effects, I can't see them preventing me flying or driving. Having said that, I can always postpone the snippage for a month or two if I contact them soon.

Anyone think attempting to fly and drive after 24 hours of rest is optimistic?

I'd give yourself some time to be able to chill out on a sofa in a trackie bottoms. Swollen bruised balls and having to walk like John Wayne for a couple of days would be much easier to handle if you're not running around the place.

Whats the point of getting this done? I mean you have to pay, and then no chance of you having kids later if you change your mind. What if you meet a woman of your dreams who absolutely wants children and convinces you?

And wouldnt you be using condoms during sex anyway, because of STD risk?
I dont see much benefits to this surgery for a young or single guy. Maybe if you're well past age of having children, and you're married/in a loving relationship for a long time, then I can see the appeal

For me - married, two children, don't want more and don't want to impose hormonal contraception on Mrs Beans.

I'd agree that it would be less sensible for a young buck who just wants to fukc. I'd guess that the surgical team would do their best to talk someone out of it, if that was their situation.

    Quick Question
How long does it take to get the "all clear"
Posted off my 2nd sample last Friday and haven't heard anything back yet, just wondering how long that takes. Can't remember what the doc told me

    Thinking of getting this done.
The thought of it makes my balls shrivel tho. :-S :-D

I've put vasectomy into Google and there are places and adds popping up everywhere , similar to searching for a sliding wardrobe...lol ...worrying.
Two prices I saw were 450 and 390.
    Vasectomyireland.ie
    And a few others.

I'm in clare, are the places much of a much to each other?
I presume it's like going to the dentist ,
    Only worse.

Are those prices the going rate now?
Or too good to be true.
I don't mind paying a premium for a professional job considering what they will be working on :-)

Done today on the NHS in London.

Minimum discomfort so far, but I'm sure the codeine is accounting for much of that. Having needles stuck in your scrotum is about as uncomfortable as you'd imagine it to be, the rest so far has been fine.

So, I finally had the snip this week, so far so good. Got the no scalpel vasectomy, have to say on small incision, A dull ache. Neurophen will sort out, but felt good themorning after,

The doc is located in Loughrea, Co,Galway, and I would highly recommend, very nice, answered all questions, did not make you feel uncomfortable. Best of luck to anyone going through it.

Every one of my male friends I mentioned it to said resounding no-ways.

I looked hard enough to see the potential downsides, the only one that gave me pause for thought was the possibility of chronic, untreatable pain. Given the % I thought I'd take the risk. But that's a potentially quality-of-life issue right there, so I can understand people not wanting to chance it.

I guess but the percentage is so low - compared to the side effects of female hormonal contraception - for us it's an absolute win-win but yeah, not for everyone I guess

    Hi All,

One thing I would say @Beans is stay off the bike for a few weeks (I'm a cyclist), all the bike forums say at least 3 weeks. You might feel fine but you could rupture some blood vessels that are tender and then bleed which ends up as a Hematoma which I had...not pleasant. Your 1 to 2 week recover turns into 6-8 weeks. I decided to put up a few shelves 3 days after the op, which meant crouching for long periods, next day I developed a Hematoma...of course this could be non- related and it would have developed it anyway.

Long and short of it, give a bit of recovery time now even if you feel ok and it will stand to you

Had the no scalpel version done about 8 weeks ago on a Tuesday. Doctor had to cut a blood vessel and put in a few stitches to stop the bleeding in the left testicle. Gave me a couple of days of antibiotics to take home. By Friday night left testicle was a bit swollen and Saturday night it was about two - three times the size of the right one. Rang the doctor on Monday and he prescribed antibiotics and inflammatories, arranged to meet him on Friday, he increased the antibiotics and changed the inflammatory as he thought it would take up to 4 weeks of more treatment. He said it appeared to have been a reaction due to the stitches.

Went to see him on the following Friday, by this stage it was gigantic and rock hard with a very unhealthy dusky black colour over part of it. He was very concerned that the drugs were not working and it was a hematoma. He rang the head of urology at the local hospital and got them to agree to see me immediately. I went to A&E and was fast tracked into see the on call Urology specialist. She agreed with the GP that it was probably a hematoma and scheduled a ultrasound for Monday morning to see if I needed surgery with me staying in hospital over the weekend to keep an eye on it.

Late Friday night the head of Urology examined me and had me put on the list for emergency surgery. Saturday evening I got taken up to theater and they operated on me, It was supposed to be a 30 minute procedure but it was about 3 hours later before I woke up due to the extent of the damage. The hematoma had caused a scrotal abscess which was full of pus and necrotic tissue, it all had to be drained and scraped out and the hematoma removed as well. They installed a temporary drain for a couple of days so as to stop another one occurring.

Got out of hospital on the Wednesday evening so only 5 nights. Three weeks later and it is quite tender still, some blood is seeping out of the stitches or the hole where the drain was so I am changing dressings daily.

They had to cut my testicle open pretty much from top to bottom so the whole no scaring from the no scalpel procedure was pointless . I will have a large scar on the outside along with permanent hardness and swelling on the inside. Have to go for a follow up in a few weeks to make sure all is well. I have to avoid the gym for at least a month and any strenuous activities.

The Urology team were fantastic throughout really tried to reassure me and explained everything, the first thing I remember waking up was the surgeon holding up two fingers to let me know they were both still there.

TL:dr scrotal abscess, hematoma, needed surgery due to possible reaction to stitches or failed stitches, I am the 1 in 1000 of cases that they warn you about in the small print of the form that you never read fully before signing.

I got mine done back in April. I sent off my samples in the last month.

I eventually got a call after a few weeks. One of my samples still had sperm in it so I am going to have to forward on more samples again.

Apparently it can take a while for a full clear out but I am hoping I will eventually get the all clear.
Thank goodness the other half is still using contraception as though the chances are very small with little sperm remaining you don't want a surprise!

Do everything they tell you to do.

It doesnt work out like that for everyone unfortunately.

I had it done about 10 years ago. I dont regret it now but whatever happened during the procedure a vein or something was clipped and I bled and continued to bleed as the sack is stretchable & no pressure put on the vein to stop bleeding. I ended up with a very stretched & sore testical, very uncomfortable & a significant coagulation of blood. I was out of work for about 2 week. Got it done after work on a friday and had fully expected to be at work on the Monday but I was in bad shape on that monday.

I would still get it done if going back in time but maybe not the same place.

Can anyone tell me how this effected the sex life after. Is there any noticable changes to sensations, ability to get erect, etc. associated with the op? Thinking of having it done early in new year. going for pre-check Thursday.

Not at all. In fact quite the opposite. Once you get the all-clear a few months after the operation the great thing is that you and the missus can do it whenever you like with zero consequences and no fiddling around with contraception to spoil the mood.

I experienced absolutely no change in sensation, desire or performance at all.

At what stage should it be done?

I'm 35, wife is 36, we have a toddler and another baby due in April. We don't want any after the second tike arrives. So I'm thinking of having a vasectomy.

On the other hand, one never knows what life will deal, so is it best to wait?

Its best done when yourself and your wife are 100% sure ye don't want anymore kids.
We both agreed we'd like 2 and waited till the 2nd one was a year old in case either of us might change our minds. We didn't and I was done a week after she turned 1.

It's best to have as many kids as possible because in 30 years time there simply won't be a pension system.

Your kids are the only people who will look after you in old age.

As .red. has written, after two kids, we waited a year (just in case of a cot death, to be honest about it) before having it done.

It's probably worth adding that there's a period of about four to six weeks after the procedure before you get the 'all clear' from the fertility clinic that the tadpoles are all gone and you're now firing blanks. So you need to be careful - or maybe not, if you're both willing to gamble a bit!
