‘Saw’ and ‘American Psycho’ TV Series in the Works From Lionsgate

Lionsgate TV is dipping into their film library with the hopes of creating some new series. Both Saw and American Psycho TV shows are in the works, and while details are so slim they might as well be non-existent, horror fans will want to take note. Both of these titles actually have plenty of potential for the TV format – Saw can be turned into an ongoing series full of different traps and mysteries, while the American Psycho source material – Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial novel – is episodic by nature.

The Cobbler: How I Disrupted An Industry, Fell From Grace & Came Back Stronger Than Ever
The rise, fall and subsequent rise of famous shoe designer and entrepreneur Steve Madden will be the subject of a TV series. Michael Rapaport (Atypical) will play Madden in the project, produced by Meryl Poster’s Superb Entertainment.

A college dropout who fell in love with shoes while working in a mom and pop shoe store in his Long Island home town, Madden took his company, which makes his eponymous shoe brand, from the fledgling startup he founded thirty years ago with a mere $1,100 to a global juggernaut.

Madden’s complicated story also includes a criminal conviction and a prison sentence after his financial affairs got entangled with the brokerage house Stratton Oakmont, co-founded by Madden’s childhood friend Danny Porush. That part of Madden’s life and career was depicted in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort and Jonah Hill as Danny Porush. Madden was played in the movie by Jake Hoffman.

Following his release from prison on 2005, Madden returned to his company as Creative and Design Chief and helped rebuild it to its current value of over $3 billion. In his personal life, Madden is an outspoken recovering addict and someone who has learned to navigate ADHD throughout his career. He is also a father to three children whom he shares with his ex-wife.

    The World of Darkness
Oscar-nominated Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, writer-producer Christine Boylan and Hivemind, which produces Netflix’s The Witcher, have teamed with Paradox Interactive to develop a film and TV franchise around the role-playing game World of Darkness.

The World of Darkness universe launched in 1991 with Vampire: The Masquerade. Today IPs under the brand include Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Orpheus and Hunter: The Reckoning which have spawned video games, virtual reality, card and board games, comic books, novels and original tabletop role-playing games. World of Darkness is known for its hybrid of horror, science fiction and fantasy where the protagonists are monsters in complex moral situations.

The World of Darkness story universe is deliberately and unapologetically inclusive and diverse,” says Boylan. “It has always made a point of including equal gendered characters, protagonists and antagonists of every race, and representation of all creeds – bringing a female and diverse audience to gaming like nothing prior. Its games and fandom are a place where women, POC, and the LGBTQI community feel welcome and we are very proud to bring these stories to life.”

Heisserer adds, “The legacy of these stories is way ahead of its time, inviting issues and perspectives other games ignored. This feels like the next step for genre.”

“Eric and Christine are among the most extraordinary creators working today,” says Hivemind president and co-founder Jason Brown, “and they’re also gamers who have played in WOD since it began. It’s a rare opportunity when the connection between storyteller and story runs this deep, and that is the alchemy which has led to many of our favorite and most culturally resonant franchises.”

Finn Wittrock To Headline ‘Green Lantern’ HBO Max Series As Guy Gardner
Written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith, Green Lantern reinvents the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner (Wittrock) and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.

    Our Flag Means Death
Oscar winner Taika Waititi is taking on yet another role in the HBO Max period comedy Our Flag Means Death. Created by Jenkins, who also serves as showrunner, Our Flag Means Death is based loosely on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet (Darby), a pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate.

After two seasons on Epix, DC origin series series Pennyworth is plotting a move to HBO Max for a potential third season.
I hear negotiations between Epix and Pennyworth producer Warner Bros. TV are still ongoing, and they involve hammering out a deal for the existing two seasons of the show, which premiered on Epix, to also be available on HBO Max. Reps for Epix, WBTV and HBO Max declined comment.

The development is not surprising. Pennyworth was sold to MGM-owned Epix months before WBTV parent WarnerMedia announced plans to launch its own streaming service, which became HBO Max. Existing originals on Warner Bros. TV Group’s platform DC Universe, including Harley Quinn and Titans, migrated to HBO Max, which was billed as a premium home for DC programming with an extensive upcoming slate of high-profile series such as Peacemaker, Green Lantern, Untitled Gotham City Police Department project, set in the same world as Pennyworth, and DC Superhero High.

I haven't watched a minute of Kenan but I've watched all of Young Rock, as a show, I think it could work well as a year to year but the format of going through the different stages of his life each week is surprisingly engaging, I forgot about it for a few weeks but caught up very quickly.

I watch the A&E Documentary on Stone Cold earlier and the Rock was on it, that man has gone through a serious amount of body transformation

    On Call
Dick Wolf is continuing to grow his television empire.

The creator of the Law & Order and Chicago franchises is moving into half-hour drama with his latest series set at Amazon’s IMDb TV.

Deadline understands that the free streaming service has ordered On Call. The show follows a pair of police officers on patrol in Long Beach, CA.

Each episode will track the duo as they respond to a new radio call, arriving on the scene to resolve an incident.

The series comes from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television as well as digital studio ATTN:.

It comes hours after Deadline revealed that Wolf, who also co-created CBS’ FBI, was handed a straight-to-series order by NBC for Law & Order: For The Defense. That spinoff will take an unbiased look inside a criminal defense firm and will be showrun by Carol Mendelsohn.

    Scarface And The Untouchable
The epic, years-long battle between Al Capone and Eliot Ness, who clashed on the biggest stage in the world on their way to becoming ultimate American enemies, is the subject of a new TV series in early development at Showtime, from Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, run by Heather Kadin, and CBS Studios where the company is based.

Written by Ben Jacoby (Newsflash, Flash Boys), the project is based on Max Allen Collins and A. Brad Schwartz’s nonfiction book Scarface and the Untouchable: Al Capone, Eliot Ness and the Battle for Chicago.

A Chicago Public Library Best Book of the Year, Scarface and the Untouchable, published in 2018 and optioned by Secret Hideout, chronicles the lives of gangster Al Capone and his lawman nemesis, Eliot Ness in Prohibition-era Chicago. Described by publisher HarperCollins as “the new definitive history of gangster-era Chicago,” the book “draws upon decades of primary source research—including the personal papers of Ness and his associates, newly released federal files, and long-forgotten crime magazines containing interviews with the gangsters and G-men themselves.”

    Billy the Kid
Premium network Epix has greenlighted Billy the Kid, an hourlong series about the famous American outlaw, written by Vikings and The Tudors creator Michael Hirst.

Otto Bathurst is set to direct the first two episodes of the eight-episode first season, executive produced by Hirst, Donald De Line of De Line Pictures, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin Television, and Bathurst and Toby Leslie via One Big Picture.

The series is described as an epic romantic adventure based on the life of Billy the Kid, also known as William H. Bonney — from his humble Irish roots, to his early days as a cowboy and gunslinger in the American frontier, to his pivotal role in the Lincoln County War and beyond.

“Billy the Kid has always been a hero of mine since I was – well, a kid! I grew up in the North of England but it made no difference! Billy was a special kind of outlaw,” Hirst said. “For a start he was so young – and for another thing, he wasn’t a psychopath who enjoyed killing, nor a criminal who robbed for material gain. He was an outlaw most of his life, but he never wanted to be. Born into a poor Irish family of immigrants, he always wanted to go straight, to be a ‘new American’. But he was never allowed to.

“Billy’s story is much more than a fantastic drama about a charismatic cowboy – although it is that! It’s also the story of the immigrant, and the story of the creation of the new America from the lawless, violent chaos of the mid-West and its many nations. So in the end it’s not just a story at all – it’s an American myth!”

Billy the Kid is a co-production between Epix Studios and MGM International Television Productions, in association with Nordic Entertainment Groups streaming service Viaplay. Casting is already underway. Production is slated to begin this June in Calgary, AB, with an eye towards a 2022 premiere on MGM-owned Epix.
