Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not meaning to go off topic, but is this the kind of system that in Winter, along with a decent cold easterly already in place, would bring blizzard like snow to much of the country? Just curious...

Still only light rain in Wicklow Town. New tags on thread title are good - but the colour needs to be changed to something darker, that yellow is hard to read.

Hard to believe there are no lighting strikes in that heavy area on the Wexford/Wicklow border and further out to sea.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭TheMilkyPirate

Escaping the strong stuff down here in south Wexford so far, still not a very nice day at all. wicklow Wexford border should be a fun place to be.

It seems to have calmed down significantly here in Cork City.
It was quite strongly blustery earlier on but, without any significant rain.
The wind is much calmer now.

Has it missed us? Or, is there more to come?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,550 ✭✭✭Min

Met Eireann giving sleet for high ground, what I always say is, you can can sleet then you can get snow.
Rain here now, started as hail. 5.2C and a Dew point of 1.3C....

I was expecting a bit more oomph out of this storm but so far, all we've had is some wind here and no rain that I've noticed.

    I'm very disappointed.

Lashing rain here, +3.0c, must be serious snow on the mountain tops.

rain really just kicked off here now.

Was just light drizzle stuff until now.

Radar not really working too well today.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 4,467 Mod ✭✭✭✭mickger844posts

Moderate rain here with a total of only 2.6mm so far. Temp 5.8c and feeling like Winter. Winds have eased off in the last few hours but a max gust of 82km/h was recorded at Waterford Airport earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,585 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

That burst of heavier radar echoes over the Irish Sea may have indicated a period of ice pellet returns more than a ramping up of rainfall rates, and this was then observed to decrease when the ice pellet component changed more to sleet or snow due to orographic uplift. Still, there is some moderate to heavy precip in the oncoming mass, although I feel the system trend is likely to be slowly weakening next 6-12 hours.

Would not expect this to be a uniform event across the south, rainshadow effects are likely to be noticeable downwind (to WSW) of various higher terrain. Could be some instances of topographic channelling in Waterford, Cork and Kerry later.

Very interesting storm evolution, we shall not see its like again. Until Tuesday anyway.

I think it is interesting that the strongest winds being reported on the 5pm met.ie reports are generally in the areas where it is the sunniest. No doubt in part being enhanced a little due to surface heating (what little there is) in these areas mixing up the air in all sorts of funny ways. Very edge of that frontal cloud passing overhead just now giving some nice displays of altocumulus statiformis when set against clear blue sky to the west.

Rain seems to be fragmenting now.
In fairness the gfs predictor never really forecast anything too very heavy.
You cant blame Met Eireann for the warnings as it did look severe earlier on
