Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How low carb can I go? (bad kidney)

I've just been to the doctor today for pain in my left kidney, this has been going on for donkeys years but my doctor told me the dangers of a high protein diet to my kidney (possibly because it's already a damaged kidney, maybe it's not so dangerous to normal functioning kidneys)

I've been successfully eating low carb for a long time now and I feel a little lost and scared as to what to do now? I know you're not doctors and that's fine, my doc basically just said anything except a high protein diet sooo I'm thinking maybe still low carb, moderate protein and loads of veg?

I know this is a really really broad question but I'm basically just wondering where to go from here really? I was looking into other things as I'm afraid of ruining all my low carby work but everything seems to go by the food pyramid and I just don't believe in that myself?

No one believes in the food pyramid. You don't really need to worry about eating a greater proportion of carbs if you're eating reasonably healthily. I understand that you're a bit concerned about potential negatives of adding more carbs to your diet after being low carb for quite some time but there doesn't have to be negatives.

Post up what a typical day's diet looked like and it gives people a better idea of what carbs to add in and so on.

Just eat a regular diet. No need to go low carb just to lose weight. You can lose weight just as easily with a regular amount of carbs it's the total of everything that will matter.

How much protein has he suggested to eat?

What is your understanding of a high protein diet - how many grams/day?
    How many carbs per day?

Why no mention of fat - how many grams of fats do you take in an average day?

OP you need to go back to a doctor or a specialist and ask what you can eat. People with impaired kidney function need to eat a special diet, low in potassium in certain instances.

The Irish Kidney Association have information on the renal diet on their website:

If you have a bad kidney then get off the high protein diet . High protein diets are very taxing on the kidneys (healhty ones) and if you have a damaged one then its not good. Go back to a normal balanced diet

Thanks I really appreciate all replies.

Can I just ask, because I'm struggling a bit. Is it reeeally that bad for kidneys? Or maybe just this one doctors opinion?

Scratch that actually, I'm just being foolish and trying to find my feet with this new information.

^ Yeah I know I think I'm just looking for any excuse not to have to retrain myself. Feeling very lost now, I've just been adding grapefruits to my usual diet but have days I've gone a bit off the rails with sugar and carbs too.

I think I'll just use myfitnesspal now and try to be sensible.
