Lighter/faster bike for comute

At the min I do just under 7km on a mountain bike with road tires (ortwhat ever you can those in-between with a smooth center patch) and I find I run out of gear more than I would like to. To some extent. But on my 20kg bike I can cycle faster (and more safely) than on my 30kg bike. I'm looking longingly at 9kg bikes… Same engine, but much easier to cycle.
