Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ran by there yesterday, seem to be a few trucks around and some machinery, so maybe they started.

Oh yes, meant to take a picture and post yesterday. They've restarted and laid down the red stuff most of the way round. Coach wasn't down yesterday evening but must ask him on Thursday and get a projected finish date.

There is definitely progression, but I asked the guy at reception abs he said that the official line is the end of August!!

Probably closer to spring 2016 by the time it gets done!

Since Chivito is busy on another thread defending the honour of sprinters, here's photographic documentary evidence of progress:

    17444593248_c74d884439_c.jpg

    17444850320_a8d98168a9_c.jpg

The track is now almost completely covered in what looks like the last layer before the top layer goes on. In the first pic, on the bottom right corner you can still see the black layer, but on the opposite side of the track, it looks like the final surface has started being laid.

Yeh I momentarily got excited when I saw the progress yesterday, but that disappeared once the guy told me the end of August is the expected time frame it will be open. Do they need to have it unused for a month to set or something?

There are probably a few factors involved in that ETA:
In the first pic, there is a white substance on the track in the shadowed area ? That looked like an adhesive of some sort and looks like it has not set due to being in shadow. I guess this is what they were talking about when they said they needed to have the weather on their side to get this done and you can see why it was probably impossible to get this done during the winter.
The remainder of the track has to be laid with its next to last layer.
Almost the entire track, plus all of the infield areas need to get the final layer
All areas have to be painted.
The council are managing the job.

The last point is probably the most germane

That seems like a lot of recent progress all the same. Hopefully the Aug date is a worst case.

A couple of months time we will have a track again :)

I hope you are joking with the couple of months. Surely it's only a matter of weeks? Nationals are in 7 weeks. A couple of months is much too late. Season will be over then.

Quote in thread is two weeks per lane - no idea if that was a p1ss take - but its taken what, 18 months to get this far, so I believe anything now :)

The marking is complete. it's pretty much done but everything has to be signed off. G V Ryan meet scheduled for July 11 expected to go ahead.

Haven't been down the club for a while. Is the track back in use again? One of the lads at the club posted this on the Twitter about the quality of the work. Anybody seen it up close or used it? What do ye think?

Just got this e-mail from the Irish Milers Club in the last few minutes

'We have listed the venue as Irishtown Stadium. The track has recently been relaid and is currently awaiting sign off on the completed work. However if we do not have sign off in time for our meet then we will switch to Morton Stadium. PLEASE keep an eye out for all messages emails/facebook and website announcements.'

So sounds like there's a bit of red tape / possible remediary work before the track is open to the public again

Someone needs to lash in an FOI on the tender. How did Dublin City Councill make such a haimes of this when Fingal were able to do a great job on santry for, if i recall, c. €100k.

I'd say you need to add on another zero for the cost of putting a Mondo track into Santry.

We are looking at Mondo track, just multiply it by 3 and u be close

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 558 ✭✭✭clear thinking

Ok say it was €300k - €1.0m for mondo, presumably the ****e effort by the nordies will have to be replaced sooner than a good track. Given the debacle to date you'd have to pay for a mondo anyway.

Track reopened today. Did a session there. Track a bit scruffy I thought but I'm no expert. Nice to have it back all the same.

From what I understand, there is a good few things to fix but they've decided to wait until the start of next summer to avoid a repeat of this whole debacle again. Will definitely be good to have it back. Looking forward to the 3k Time Trial already :D

Considering the IMC was switched from there to santry today, is it consider not fit for competition at the minute?

For field events anyway it's definitely not ready. The in field is completely overgrown and I also heard rumours that the long jump boards were layed in the wrong position and will need to be re-done. It's so ridiculous that it's almost funny but it's not funny because it affects me :(

There's also a notable depression in Lane 1 halfway around the second bend. Wouldn't call it a pothole exactly but it seemed to have been topped up with loose grains of whatever you call that rubber compound bound into the top layer. :(

Was anybody at the track the last few days? There's a red cone in lane 7 about 20m from the finish line. Underneath it is a huge rip in the track. Incredible. Say goodbye to any track meets taking place there!

little bird mentioned that the new pothole wasn't due to the gang who put in the track. the flood lights had to have bulbs replaced the boys brought in a high lift with extendable arms to make it stable, but they didn't bother putting down a pad to spread the pressure across the track, hence the pothole. but the new light really shows up the hole nicely

I've been trying not to get riled up about stuff on t'internet but I can't. What level of retard drives a lorry onto a track and digs it up. I wonder who in Dublin city council is accountable for this debacle and if they are suing the developer for the delay and the light installer for digging up the track.

    Jokeshop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭dekbhoy

absolute disgraceful carry on. anything the city council are involved in seems a joke...... no accountability. cru should consider their options.

Which options are you referring to? You mean abandoning the stadium?

    Options? What options?

    Santry? Miles away
ALSAA? Worst track in the Western World
Tallaght? Limited access for other clubs
Donore? 300m, and no access for other clubs
Greystones? A disaster to get to
    Leixlip? Miles away
UCD? Dug up 4 years ago

    There's the options right there!

AFAIK there's a plan for completing the snag list after the recent resurfacing. Can't provide any details though.

There are no plans for a DSD track. It's the Marlay track which is the one in the pipeline, and DSD will merely be primary tenants of it, like Crusaders are with Irishtown. I haven't heard of any developments with regards it though. I'll believe it when I see it!

I was thinking of the info from this thread. Just had a vague memory of there being mention of a track.

edit: are there still plans for a track in Marlay btw? Any info on that online? All I can find is the link below which suggests this should have been completed in 2014

How come DSD have no track, I thought they were doing very well as club. Don't they run the mini marathon?

If someone drove a lorry onto a gaa pitch to install lights do you think the council would get away without the gaa club in situ running amok, or if it was a gaa club do you think the lorry would have even got out.

How many tracks do you think u would have in Dublin without the council?

Yes they did something wrong, but we would not be better off without their help.

The reason we pay tax is to get public services and facilities. The Gaa just got €100m in cork, is it too much to ask for a €100k running track to be done properly? Is it ok to waste taxpayers money on making a haims of things for years?

It didn't read that it was a lorry that done the damage, was it not a mobile high lift type of thing or was it an actual full size lorry of the type used to fix street lights?

It's not to do with the gaa

Someone said the council should not be involved in these things, but who else will do it?

And remember the gaa gives a lot more back to the economy in what it generates for businesses etc

If they are amateur and don't pay people how do they contribute to the economy? Maybe it's all the under the table payments that the gaa doesn't pay tax on that you are referring to?

All sports contribute to the economy and if there was no gaa people would be doing another sport instead which would equally well contribute to the economy.

I know for a fact, having witessed it, that culchies rocking up to croker sit on the kerbs drinking home made tea or cans of harp so they don't have to spend a red cent up in the big schmoke.

Here is how it generates the money :

    1) 80,000 x 2 for all Ireland finals
    2) 40,000 x 4 for Munster hurling matches
    3) pubs, hotels and shops make a fortune on these days, it goes back to the tax man
    4) 3 sell out concerts in croke park, more money in hotels, shops and pubs
    5) Amount of money spent on transport by the fans and teams, goes to the taxman,
    6) All the other senior matches, bringing money into towns etc
    7) Jersey sales
    8) leasing out of the croke park for conventions and Xmas parties

Everyone takes under the table money, athletics is no different.

Anyhow ur derailing this thread, as nothing to do with gaa.

So back to my original question, who else will lookafter the tracks and do the maintenance oif not the council?

Yep, us culchies do that in Dublin but we also do that in all towns and places throughout the country all year long at many events like the ploughing, local county shows and oh, GAA matches.

I bet the businesses like shops and pubs, petrol stations, B&Bs, hotels, vendors, parking meters, car parks and lock hards wouldn't miss the culchies who don't spend money one bit if they sold Croke Park and the council built a running track there instead.

And by the way, I lived near Croke Park for 10 years and never saw an ounce of trouble from my country brothers and sisters.
