Haha, oh my, that actually looks like it might be decent :D It also seems like there's a fair bit of interaction between the cast - perhaps the news that they wouldn't crossover with each other that much was exaggerated?

If I have one quibble? The gag at the start is obviously riffing on the Cornballer joke, so I hope the new series doesn't constantly nod & retread the old jokes.

I hope for the opposite, it has to refer to old jokes...as well as introduce new old references :D

Ah don't get me wrong, I loved the callbacks to old jokes in the first 3 series, I just hope the 4th doesn't overstuff itself with references for the sake of it. But like I said, a minor quibble - officially excited now :D

I think its self-acknowledged status as a major cult phenomenon will probably hurt it. It'll be a self-referential fan-**** I fear.

I'm just worried it'll be just a load of throwbacks to what made the first 3 seasons great rather than a really great season in itself. So far it doesn't 'feel' like a season 4 but there's no way to know without watching I suppose.

I thought it was just riffing on the fact that Phoenix is freaking hot. I've burned my hands on my steering wheel before.

The callbacks to old/running jokes was half the fun of the first 3 seasons. Just keep doing that and they have a winner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,983 ✭✭✭mystic86

So these episodes will be available at 8am on sunday 26th... I presume people will still be able to post them on torrents etc? As in people can record stuff from Netflix, if they can record TV shows from TV normally anyway - right?

They did that with House of Cards.

So in case anyone was wondering just how many injokes & callbacks there were in the original run of the series, the internet shall provide:

I would say the Simpsons is about the worst thing on television as the moment.

You've never seen Honey Boo Boo I take it?

Apparently in the new season for quite a few scenes characters are just superimposed with each other. I'm worried how stilted it will feel.

    http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/sources-claim-arrested-development-used-green-screens-to-edit-the-actors-into-scenes-due-to-scheduling-conflicts

Rivals Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter) and Lucille Austero (Liza Minnelli) share the screen in at least one scene in the new season, but the characters, who are shown interacting in a restaurant, were not in the same room together, according to one source.

For that scene, the source described Hurwitz reading, off camera, Walter’s parts while Minnelli filmed her lines. The footage was later combined with footage Walter filmed alone. The result, says this source, is a mixed bag.

“It does look kind of like the Austin Powers stuff — you can tell that it was green screened,” said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Knowing Arrested Development they'll have written in gags making fun of the way it was filmed.

"Oh Lucille, it's so good to see you."
    - "I know, it feels like we haven't sat down together for ages."
"It still feels like that for some reason."

yada yada (imagine a funnier version of the above for proper effect to be achieved)

Hmm, I reserve scepticism for anything reported from 'a source'; It could work, but it depends on how well they can fake the chemistry & reactions to the zingers

That said I could well believe it; it was reported ages back that they couldn't get all the cast together at the same time, but I had just presumed they would keep everyone separated.

Watched a couple of episodes (going to try and space them out a little) and it definitely has some funny moments. Not sure about the flashbacks with Seth Rogan / Kirsten Wiig as George & Lucille though.

Oh and there are a couple of greenscreen moments, where actors clearly weren't sharing the screen; its not too distracting, as otherwise absent characters are kept in the background as body doubles (turned away from the camera)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

I'm not enjoying it. It's clever but not particularly funny. The episodes are too long. I like the character-centric intro titles, but that's it.

    Episode 5
And they let Tobias in on the joke!!!!:mad::mad:

Watched the first four episodes and enjoying 'em. First episode was probably the funniest, TBH, the mothball joke was fantastic. Like the meta-plot that begins developing in the fourth episode, really makes me hope that film gets made to see all the self-aware shenanigans that it would involve. So far anyway they're managing the line between self-referential and new content well, and very much appreciating the range of supporting cast members / cameos they've lined up (
    John Slattery!
). Not enough Gob yet though!

The only time I've really noticed the greenscreen bits were during the George Sr. and Oscar scenes, but that's a given ;)

The 3rd episode isnt great but picks up significantly after it. Giving Michael a
    google street view car
    was a stroke of genius

Taking a break from binging. Gob's episode is probably the best so far but Ron Howard's incessant narration is making this very difficult to watch. It's not like the new structure even needs the constant recaps.

Ok so basically I wasn't enjoying it too much until I got to episode 7. Now I realise that I wasn't enjoying it too much because there was not enough GOB!. Episode 7 is really, really funny. I also am disappointed with Lucille this season. She hasn't been given enough one liners at all.

Was finishing rewatching the original 3 seasons so just got to watch episode one now. Quite happy with it so far, loved the cameo from the entire Workaholics cast :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,557 ✭✭✭KeithM89

Episode 7 (GOBs) is priceless, one of the funniest of the entire series.
    Not enough buster yet though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,435 ✭✭✭wandatowell

Jebus, I forgot I didn't have to wait a week to see the next episode SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

I just finished the fourth episode - enough for one day I think, binges of any kind are bad! - and to me the meta jokes are the weakest & most misjudged material so far. It was all a bit too on the nose, if not plain smug; I even found the episode dragged quite a bit, as if they hadn't enough footage to fill the episode length. That said, Isla Fisher in a corset top did help. Oh yes indeed.

Overall I'm enjoying it - the series that is, not the corset top (that's a given) - it's still as cleverly written as it was back in the original run, even if the laughs aren't as hearty and regular as before. Oh and to be honest, it's already leaps and bounds beyond the fairly horrendous "Mr. F" portion of series 3.
The only time I've really noticed the greenscreen bits were during the George Sr. and Oscar scenes, but that's a given ;)

So far the most obvious instance of it was in the first episode,
when Barry, dressed in the comedy naval uniform, was speaking to Lucille and George Sr; it was extremely obvious he wasn't sharing the screen with them - he wasn't even looking at the same spot Lucille was supposed to be standing in!
