I was thinking of getting my first one (a religious symbolic tattoo). I was just wondering what other peoples opnions of them are?

Seriously considering getting one myself, I was even in at the tattoo place today to talk to the guy about it! I want to get a take on a compass!!

I haven't got any. For 2 reasons. Firstly, i reckon if I got one i'd get sick of it and want rid of it and they're pretty permanent!

But mostly I have none because I really don't think they would suit me. There are a lot of people who have tattoos that you think "Yeah, that's alright. Suits them".

Then there are others and you think "What were you thinking dude? A Liverpool crest on your neck?". or even tattoos on people who they don't suit!

But in general I think it's all about the individual!

If you are getting a tattoo and are serious about it you won't care what people's opinions of them are. They don't change the person despite what many may think.

Have several done, and plan on getting a few more.

Each is "important" to me in a way, and frankly I've never been fussed what others may or may not think of them, which is the way it should be.
I also have mine in places that would not be seen should I need to have a certain, let's say appearance, for a job.

I definitely wouldn't! They look awful.

Even if I did, I would be bored of it after a few weeks and would want to change/remove it!

I have one done, never regretted it but wouldn't get any more either. I think the balls about them is that you don't know what you'll be like when you are older. For instance, I got a little dragon guy on my back 20 years ago and now he has a 'nice' growth of back hair on him...

Does it look bad now because of it? It's obstructed by the hair of course, but I don't see how that would necessarily make it bad.

I've always wanted one. I have come up with ideas that I was really fond of over the years, but I always find a reason to chicken out.

I'm currently designing a half sleeve, starting from the shoulder down.

Probably a more Thorn style motif rather than the standard Maori tribal style.

I've none,always wanted a discreet tattoo but never saw anything I like.

Don't mind most tattoos,but I've a serious dislike for names-it just seems a bit odd to have your wife's,kids' or any other names on public display.

I think they are a great memory from a specific time in your life. If they fade, just get them touched up.

I don't regret mine and I don't understand the age argument. Everyone gets old and wrinkled, what difference will a tattoo make? At least when you start to loose your mind, the tattoos can trigger memories

I've got one, on my forarm, its means a lot to me, to remind me of things i often find my self, forgetting...

I dont really care what people think of it and if some one says I like your tatt it makes it more special

,I'm seriously thinking of getting one to mark my 50th next year. The initials of my wife and 2 kids use the letters ICE. Any suggestions on a design to incorporate these?

Don't have any and would only consider it to commemorate something deeply, deeply personal.

There are some cool tattoos out there but I think the vast majority are kind of dumb and fairly pointless, like people who get tattoos from computer games and animé (e.g. the triforce from zelda as a tattoo). I see that as something so trivial and pointless to get marked on your body. Like who likes a video game that much?

A guy I used to go to school with came home from his leaving cert holiday with loads of cartoon characters tattooed on him and another friend got Carpe Diem tattooed on himself and I found out while talking to him about it that he didn't know what it meant :rolleyes:

That said guys who complete stuff like serious endurance events get a pass in my book to commemorate an event that takes herculean efforts to complete.

I love a good tattoo, they can be so sexy! Just make sure you trust the artist and absolutely love the tattoo that is designed for you and you will love it forever.

No, I personally don't like them. They offend my personal artistic sensibilities. No problem with anyone else getting one, not sure if I'd like them in a partner though, it's never come up.

It's not a terrible statement by that poster. He/she probably should have added "I think" to the sentence, but if you don't like something, you don't like it.

My thoughts on tattoos are that they are not my thing, but each to their own. I wouldn't get one, but I wouldn't rule out a girl just because she had one. Although I would prefer none. But I'd prefer a dark haired girl too and I wouldn't rule out a blonde or a red head. Preferences are not absolute.

I find threads like this have people who over zealously defend or attack tattoos.

Saw one lad on my facebook got one of bloody spiderman, kinda cool at 16/17 not so much when he is older, I think he will regret that.

I can't stand them on women either.

I have two, one i absolutely love and look at all the time and the other I wouldn't get done again if I had the choice. Neither of them are on view, and, while I would get rid of one if I could, I don't hate it or anything - most of the time I forget I have it.

Reminds me: when I got my first one done, there was a queue in the shop. Two lads before me were mates and getting done together. Dude asks them where they want them, they point to their forearm. Asks them which ones they want and they point to a couple on the wall. Dude says "ok, those are £150". Lads say "what can we get for £50". Tattoo dude points at a section of the wall and the lads quickly scan it and 15 seconds later pick their designs. Mental.

Have two, may or may not get more. Got my first one when I was 22 and waited over ten years before getting my second. If I see something that I believe will stand the test of time and suits me as a person then I'm definitely open to getting more.

I don't have any but I quite like tattoos on other people although I prefer smaller ones that don't dominate the arm/back/whatever. I've occasionally though of getting one but I'm too indecisive to make a decision like that. I've been thinking of getting my nose pierced for several years and still haven't made up my mind and I'm in my late 30s now!

I think I have some degree of admiration for people who have endured the pain of a tattoo, because I'm not sure I could do that.

i have seven and i love them.not to everyones taste i must agree but i got them for me not anyone else;).geting my back piece and thats it then. im a year in now geting the design and theme right but should b worth the wait when done.

I love tattoos, and they're seriously hot on the opposite sex - once they're done right. When I was younger I actually hated them, due to the fact that all I'd seen were dodgy looking tats. But over the past few years I've come across some absolutely amazing work and my appreciation for the art form has really grown.

I have one, and I absolutely love it. I got it done for my Graduation and spent nearly 3 hours drawing it up with an amazing artist before he even loaded the ink. I think that's the most important thing; finding someone who can put the picture you have in your mind down on paper, and make it look ten times better in the process! Especially if you're not too skilled at the oul art like me!

I've LOADS more in the works, but my work is restricting me at the moment with regards to placement etc., and also as I'm in Korea I'm unsure about trusting anyone good enough here tbh. Anything I get done here will probably be strictly wording - I don't want to waste the other ideas I have on someone who does an average job.

I've had a rec for an artist here recently though and there's a convention on at the weekend, so watch this space...
