Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Forum Meetup - November 8th - 8:30pm JW Sweetmans

It has been agreed this will take place on Novemver 8th at 8:30pm in JW Sweetmans.

Howdy mes amis. Was just wondering if anyone fancied a forum meetup. I haven't been to one in a while unfortunately and if there was any interest I'm sure we could see something through!

I might be a bit optimistic if there could be one for October (fancy dress anyone? :pac:) but if there's interest like myself I'm game. Or I'll chance my arm, or an early November one either.

Any ideas you can shoot away; twas only an idea really.

Meetups were a bit of a laugh in the past and would hate to see them fade away! Could be a great source for people to meet like-minded people, and also for craic!

I haven't been on a board meet up since the internet was a foetus.

I wholeheartedly approve of the sentiments above. :)

I'm interested but November suits me more.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Sounds good :) Fully agree that they shouldn't fall to the wayside.

Have had good intentions to attend previous meetups, will definitely go to this one whatever, wherever and whenever it transpires to be :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Ash885

Well I'd imagine November would be far more feasible for people at this stage to book ahead and see what their plans are. What are people's thoughts on the 8th/9th or 15th/16th of November? It doesn't bother me a whole pile on the dates!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭Daith

    Prob 8/9th for me

Would be great get to a meet up. 9th would suit me best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

Is there ever a preferred venue for such shenanigans?

  • Registered Users Posts: 39 lucasmaximus

8/9th is good for me too, im easy venue-wise aswell :)

I'd be on for this...November suits me better too although the 8th I have a course during the day but other dates could work!!

Well if someone wants to organise a day-type meetup feel free. I sadly can't because of travel to Dublin. But if it's a nighttime-ish meetup people want, we usually meet around 8.30 onwards at a pub. Anyone and everyone is free to join at whatever time and wherever we are. Whatever suits you, suits us.

Usually people meet somewhat central as it's easiest for everyone. Sweetman's is a good choice if it's not too packed, but if there's another one out there. I don't want to be bossy or anything xD

Sunday nights wouldnt suit me with no Dublin Bus nitelink!!

Given that you're the one who suggested this meetup and night time suits you I'd say just go for nightime beers again!

Sweetmans is fine and nice and central.

Now that you mention it, I'm saying that the dress code will be Country Western :pac:

Well it let's people pop in and out without much of a fuss if that suits. There'll be a small patrol possibly going onwards to another bar/club and if that isn't your scene (terrible pun), you can always head off early. It's as relaxed as that!

I'd reccomend it to those recently saying they don't have many gay friends (boy or girl), or those with similar interests. 'Tis nice to have a few friends who know what it's like! But it's not an agony aunt session either! bit of fun and drinks and all that jazz will be bang tidy.

Can we take it as read that it's gonna be in Sweetmans aka Messrs anyway?

  • Registered Users Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Ash885

I'm for that venue yup. If the mood takes us we can hit a few others and a nightclub if there's interes in the wee hours!

Sound! I guess I have to go now! HA HA!

Meetups have been a great way to expand your friendship and get your head around certain things! Previous threads show it's a great use to people so if you're able to! All ages, genders and hair colours welcome.

Question, is Sweetman's loud? I've been before but think it was early enough and not packed. I literally can't hear people talking in packed noisy bars...

I hate noisy bars too. I think sweetmans can be a bit noisyish cause they have wooden floors and no carpet but I could be wrong.

    It's only a problem if there's a band in.

If people meet early enough it may not be such a problem.

For the last few ones there's little alcoves in Sweetman's which were great for reducing noise and making it an easy meeting point. If it's too busy or not suited we can also just update this thread and motor on somewhere else.

Generator Hostel in Smithfield is decent. I would recommend it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Ash885

Usually Generator in Smithfield asks you to stay more than two nights at the weekend. Shame, it was really a solid place.

Recently I've been using B&Bs to stay up in Dublin. If you google some listings, there should be a good few out. They work out cheaper anyway because of the brekkie included and some of the ones are pretty stellar services!

All you're looking for is a place to rest the head for a few hours, I'd try not to spend too much big bucks on it really.

Try the hostelworld website. Unfortunately there is big demand for Saturday nights in Dublin so try and book well in advance if possible.

I would love to go to this as I very rarely if ever get to interact with fellow people on the LBGT spectrum.
I know a lot of Boards Beers take place at Sweetmans but it's a good spot with a very centralised location and hey, cheap craft beer on tap!
Regarding the noise issues, I've only been in it up to about 10:30pm in the few instances I've been to Beers (I live outside Dublin City Centre and generally am plagued by overly protective parents who insist I come home at a reasonable hour...), the sound level isn't too bad.
I find the alcoves to be quite cosy and grand for intimate chit-chats. I would also recommend the basement level as it seems to be the least noisy but it's entirely up to what prevails as the most requested venue.
    Just my two cents. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Ash885

Will we say the 8th for defo. then so people can get their skates on to book hotels and/or work off?

Venue can always be easily changed but I'd say general acceptance for Sweetmans.

I'm on for this...sounds good! So how many people are going? Any women? Not that it is very important but just wondering if I'll be the token girl ( :! I'm 26 as well incase any o' ye needed to know ( :!

  • Registered Users Posts: 639 ✭✭✭Ash885

Well we'll start a list and sure see how it goes from there.

    1. babysock88
    2. Ash885

Add to the list as needs be. I think all the girls in the past were afraid to be the only token girl, and then none ended up coming. But some brave soul or two came, they'd all be united. We'd all be united. We're all one big old gay family after all. But regardless of it though, come along it should be a laugh and a half :)

Was tempted to go to one of these for old time sake, unfortunately I've plans that day. Maybe those plans will get cancelled between now and then but for now I'll say good luck and I hope it goes ahead. Seems to be a bit of momentum building for this one which is great. I really enjoyed these when I first went almost TWO YEARS AGO now! It was a really big help and I'm genuinely not 100% sure where I would be now in the whole coming out process if I had not went.
