Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't know what to do. I love the snow, I want it, but I also want to be better prepared for it....and you know what that means.

So the question is, do I prepare this time and buy crampons and snow socks for the car and snow shovels etc and be virtually guaranteed no snow or do I get them in advance only to have them gather dust for the next half decade?

    Decisions Decisions! :D

Get some salt for out side your house. Look at pipes now and figure on extra insulation/combating the cold. I wouldn't give snow shoes for cars the time of day, I am told they don't last long at all. Better to get a spare set of snow wheels for the car. I think it was said in Motoring how some guy imports partially used snow wheels from Germany for reasonable prices.

Yeah, as johngalway says, think about the things that you were missing last year and go out now and buy them while they're cheap. Driveway salt (or even dishwasher salt), spades, shovels, etc.

Snow socks are fantastic inventions, but they're for emergency use - to get your car through a few hundred metres of impassable snow or up a steep hill. If you drive on them where the thickness of the compacted snow on the road is less than 30mm, they will be ruined. They're good for me because the entrance/exit to my estate is a hill, and the roads around my area have consistently gotten blocked by people struggling up slight inclines, so I was able to use the snow socks to get up Stocking Lane (which had been effectively abandoned) and bypass the chaos.

Snow Tyres/Wheels are all well and good, but I can't justify the expense nor do I have anywhere to store them.

I'm noticing lately that there seems to be a bit of an urban myth emerging in conversations I'm having when I'm out and about, that people are saying that they heard (nobody knows from who though, just "someone in the know" lol!!!), that this coming winter is going to be by far, the most harsh, coldest and severe to date, taking into special account, the last two extremely cold winters...

The thing is, there doesn't seem to be any actual forecaster or specialist that is behind this, but yet apparently people are hearing about a slow down in the appearance of sun spots/solar activity, and as human's are prone to do, a lot of folks are then making a huge leap of assumption on the back of that statement on solar activity, and are assuming that the next winter is going to be like something out of Siberia!

Is anyone else finding this weird yet welcome logic emerging in social conversations?!?:cool::cool:

Sure you can almost hear it on this thead lol!

It would be funny though if it is indeed gonna be worse than last 2 years... ( BETTER :D ) ... ANd the only way to get about is by skis ! ha :D

Oh and it the solar scientist/meteorological people that are hinting at the worse winter this year :)....

Plus , the naturists seeing all the birds and flowers and what not doing things that hint at a possible colder winter this year... :)

Like heres one from last year http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/oct/19/uk-weather-cold-winter-swans ... i wonder how soon they get back THIS year :):):)

I recall Joe Bastardi saying some time ago he thought the the winters of 2011/12 and 2012/13 would be when this current cycle of cold weather would peak. If solar activity is increasing, albeit slightly, then there could be a latency period of a year or two before its effect would be felt.

IF it IS solar activity that is the prime driver of weather, the jury is out, but it's looking more and more likely that it is, then the winters of 2020 and later will be real chillers as they after the next minimum.

Yes:D. If only we could fast forward to winter time:D

we'll truly know it's an epic winter, if civil war starts to breaks out on this forum! it wasn't until I started posting here that I realised just how instrumental my wishes were in the type of weather we have

There is an article (full page) in the Farmers Journal about the link between solar activity and cold winters.
Nothing that hasn't been discussed on this forum. The article says the 2C warmer winters which is the current advice given should be revised to include solar activity.

Well now that's a bit harsh in my opinion sponge bob, yes there was some nonsense posts but it is a public forum, and come on! when there's extreme weather people are going to look for somewhere they can get information and interact with others. It's not like this forum is an exclusive club for certain people.

I do understand where you're coming from but there's no need to get abusive.

I remember you saying you can be down in the town, where it's raining heavily, then as you make your way back home you can see the transition from rain to sleet, before finally it turns to snow as you reach home. I've never actually experienced something like that. I don't think i'd tire of snow if I was getting it as frequently as you. You must be not right in the head:pac:

The south and west rarely get much snow, plenty in Donegal most winters but still always a nice change from the usual dark and miserable weather we get.

We nearly got stuck in the hills back in December 09 after being caught out by snow, it was heavy rain/sleet in Letterkenny but the further into the hills towards Fintown we went it turned progressively to snow before eventually turning to blizzard like conditions. Heard on the radio about half an hour later that the road was closed and cars stranded!

With one of the coldest Julys on record what does that say about the coming winter?!

Low sun spot activity will mean a long cold winter ahead for N. Europe and it seems this will be the trend for at least the next three decades.

Or as is often the case in this country, the exact opposite of what is expected will happen! As much as it hurts me to say this, I think we are in for an exceptionally mild and boring winter. Park your hopes right here for a hat trick says I!!!

Cold so far, by the end of the month, temps should be near average.

A bit early for this but hey.... :D. Did anyone here that this winter coming is supposed to be another arctic freeze? Could even be worse than 2010/2011 winter. I heard the presenter from RTE 2fm reading it off a newspaper this morning.

What are your thoughts or did you hear or read this also?

Well, I'm fairly well intune with nature and have predicted the cold snap for the past two winters all by myself :o

I don't however forsee a cold winter again this year. I "feel" like we're in for an exceptionally wet one, mild at times and only a brief cold spell in February but nothing on the level we saw last year.

Extreme weather will hit parts of France by means of a Tornado, most likely to occur in Northern regions.

Could be a mild one too.Low Solar seems to promote greater chance of blocked westerlies. So not written in stone im afraid.
