Well Sunday was the best day for cycling in a long time - no wind, set off in balmy 1 degrees for the Sally Gap and it warmed up nicely on the way. Was delighted to shave 15 minutes off my time, doing the 29.2km from door (D15) to the Door (sign post at the top of the Sally Gap) in 2:13:00, despite some minor technical difficulties en route (bike will only go as low as 4th gear so fiddled about with the RD a few times at the side of the road). Persevered anyway, and for extra penance I headed on up to Kippure mast - delighted I did, the view there on a clear day is amazing. Had a banana and a sneaky slash, then enjoyed the down hill thrills on the way home.

Did my first moderate cycle of the summer so far from killiney to enniskerry to powerscourt and up to the top of the old long hill where i descended back into enniskerry for tea. then went to glencullen and onto to glencree and looped back to glencullen to stepaside and finally to home to home. was absolutely chuffed wasnt entirely interested in having a planned route but wanted to tackle some nice climbs. forgot how scary descending can be! had a bad crash coming down off a hill last year that left with some serious scaring road rash! took nearly six weeks to heal consider myself very lucky to be alive considering how fast i was pelting. all it took was one stray bit of grit to kick the rear wheel out.

think the best part of the day would have to have been the scone and coffee in enniskerry village

any one know a nice route say 100km or so from the south dublin area to the wicklow area?

Allez, nice route that is 100 km on the nose.
Dundrum town centre to enniskerry, head to powerscourt waterfall but take a left to go to djouce/sugar Loaf and then on to laragh via roundwood. Then follow sign for Sally gap (immediate right at coffee shop in laragh). When u get to sally gap head crossroads go left down to manor Kilbride then brittas, take a right in Brittas off n81 to head to balinteer and home. Took me 4hrs on yesterday.

I broke out my 3/4 length shorts for a 4hr spin yesterday. Was fully expecting to get rained on at some stage, particularly heading up Wicklow Gap and seeing dark clouds looming on the horizon. But other than a few drops at one stage it remained dry throughout. Maybe it was my expectation of rain that kept me from even thinking of suncream before I headed out. Cue some of the most ridiculous sunburn I've had in a while, stretching from above ankle to below knee on both legs, but only on the outsides of the legs. And, of course, my shorts rode up a bit on one leg mid-ride so the sunburn is not even uniformly ridiculous across both legs. *sigh* Lovely weather though, great day to be out on a bike.

On my way down Ballinascorney hill on the way home, while chewing on the last few tasty oats of my energy bar, a fly bounced off my lip. But bounced where? Did it simply bounce off and away, or did it bounce into my mouth? I couldn't tell. Was I chewing on 2 oats before this or 3, 'cos there were certainly 3 oat-sized objects in my mouth now? I didn't know. Should I just spit the entire contents of my mouth out just to be safe? Probably. But it was a tasty bar. I opted to continue chewing and not dwell too much on it. Nothing went pop in my mouth though, which I'm taking to be a positive sign. Hmm, less dwelling, more denial.

It wouldn't have been my first fly of the season either, that was several weeks ago as I strode from my kitchen table to my fridge. The bastard intercepted me mid stride and adhered itself to my tongue. In my kitchen, for feck sake, and on foot! I'm not fond of flies.

A regular favourite which I did on saturday is Rathfarnham - Cruagh road - Sally gap - Glendalough - Roundwood - Old long hill - Enniskerry - Home, about 80k. A bit longer is same up to sally gap but take a right down to Manor Kilbride - Blessington lakes - Wicklow gap - Glendalough and back about 120k from memory. Both great spins on a nice day, though can be much colder and blowier than the likes of the old long hill in poor weather.

grueling today but was mighty fun. what started off as a supposed spin to Glen Cullen and Enniskerry got a tad longer when i took the wrong turn and ended up on the Sally Gap. was pretty comfy on the climbs though to my surprise and even managed a pit stop in Enniskerry on the way home for a fine raspberry scone and coffee and got home a minute over the 3 hour mark. Is this a good time? I will say this Banana power bars are absolutely disgusting!

    heres the mapped route

Cant wait to upgrade the little allez to ultegra this week. next up is a carbon frame :) Thinking Dolan Hercules.

Heres a little shot of the scenic surroundings.

I've been off the bike for around seven weeks due to a combination of injury & bereavement. So first day back was disappointing. Did a 30k run from here to Ballyboughal / Nags Head / Five Roads and then home on the flat. Averaged barely over 20kph and took 90mins.

I suppose I can only get better...

Went from Drogheda to Naul to Ballyboughill, across to the N1 and back to Drogheda via Balbriggan this morning.
That was my first time climbing to Naul since breaking my wrist there last year.
As I passed the junction where I crashed, I let out an involuntary primal scream of rage!
Weird..but very satisfying, felt like closure. :)

EDIT: might have met you out there shamwari!

Nice cycle yesterday, a loop from my local village in south Wicklow around the nearby mountain Croaghan Kinsella with a little extension out to Woodenbridge and back via Aughrim.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/179751400

Really like my Giant TCX2 bike. Gives me the option to hop onto a trail for an offroad diversion if I want one. Its also solid on some of the bad road quality you often find.

Saw a unique sight on this cycle. Something you only really see on the nature documentaries. I must have spooked a bird that was about to tuck into its lunch. Couldn't see what type of bird it was but it was quite big. It took off and released a small bunny from its talons. The poor mite was probably already done for and seemed to float in mid-air for a second before it fell into the bushes that the bird had alighted from. A camera moment if there ever was one.

Had a great spin yesterday. Covered over 83 miles, Swords over to Trim, down to Enfield and then back again. No hills to speak of. The new High5 stuff I picked up on Saturday morning kept me energised. Only moment of note was the young lad in the small red car that pulled onto a roundabout right in front of me. Was completely oblivious of my presence. Copious amounts of brakes and swearing and I was able to proceed safely.

Nice mellow spin up to the sally gap this evening, and some great downhills on the military road and cruagh. Wasn't so gone on the downhill past lough bray, road is truly in sh!te in parts. Amazing to be warm in the hills in the evenings in shorts and short sleeves. Long may it last!

Cracking day for it today. I decided to try do a bunch of roads I rarely do - Woodside Road leading to Devil's Elbow, through Glencree and up to Sallygap from the north side, and then the little turn-off near Laragh that brings you to Roundwood via some back roads. And then took the main road back to Enniskerry instead of heading back over Old Long Hill.

Shouldn't have gone to the pub last night though, legs didn't respond well at all. Felt like I was riding with the brakes on. Still though, have a nice burning sensation on my arms now, and got some motor-pacing training over the 'gap!

There's very few other things I'd rather spend a day like this doing. :)

edit: Also, tonnes of Orwell jerseys out there!

Cope charity cycle today. Cork - Clonakilty -Cork. Bones of 100 Km, road is good enough but very busy. Wind was with going down but against coming back:(. Tough going, even picked up a bit of a tan. Fitness building up nicely for the Tde Burren and the RoK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,200 ✭✭✭manwithaplan

Buggered off out of work at lunchtime yesterday. I was a bit sick of hammering around the roads of north county dublin in what passes for training and, in view of the weather and my not-fully-recovered back, decided to enjoy a spin around wicklow. I rode out from town over the Sally Gap and down that heavenly road past Glenmacnass into Laragh. Good coffee and a sandwich at the café (and a bit of a stretch of the back on the grass out the front - it's OK to look like a tit when no-one knows you). Up over the Wicklow Gap and through Valleymount into Blessington. Tough headwind on the way back into town but nothing could disrupt my good spirits (not even the upturned car on the way into Blessington - hope the poor soul is OK).

Can feel it a little in the back today but that gives me an excuse to stay in bed in the morning on a precautionary basis so every cloud...

Same, on all of the above. Took a spin with the sis out to Enniskerry, Powerscourt, Sally gap, Laragh, Sallygap, GlenCullen and home. Chatting to an Orwell lad in the hippy cafe, and wishing to feck I'd put suncream on my arms as well as my legs. 110k, hills and some words to the wise if this weather keeps up.

First time on the bike in over a year due to injury and illness. Delighted with how strong I felt on the bike and completely surprised myself going over the 4 drags that I hate with a passion. Really pushing it now because I have a massive charity cycle in planning and it's a great incentive.

Took advantage of the warm spell yesterday and brought the bike with me to work in the hope of getting a half day. The God's approved and off I set on this http://app.strava.com/rides/9396757. Big thanks to the Fourtrak drive with the low-loader who I drafted for about 5k @ c.45kmh on the N2!!:)

I went out with the Swords 8:30am spin on a lovely morning, the pace was quite sedate for the first 30km and then someone went off the front and some bad men spent the next 40km trying to shred my legs :)

Got pulled over by a Garda in unmarked car (with lights and sirens )in Lusk this evening for not using the cycle lane on the Rathmore Road. When I protested that to use it would be dangerous and pointed out that it was full of walkers, joggers, dogs, buggies etc. (all going merrily by as we spoke) he said he wasn't interested in my opinions on safety!

Did 102km from cork to fermoy and back, got a flat on the mountain change it couldn't find anything in the Wheel place a new tube in got another flat but it was a slow one same with the first one got home notice the wheel was flat change it again took the tyre off the wheel to find a small little bit of wood put a new tube in started to pump the wheel and the. A big bang a part of the tyre never went in fully and popped out and the tube blow from the metal of the wheel..

By Law, do you have to use the cycle lane.

Often cycle over quincentinal bridge here in galway. I dont use the cycle path as it has been dug up a few times and is very rough. It also several ridges, about 5 or 6 cm wide going across the cycle path.

Also, there are several anti-slip strips for pedestrians, which could cause a fall.

Yes. I'm a reasonable person. As we spoke several walkers passed on the cycle lane. I pointed out to the Garda that I need to take my safety and their safety into account and, as I often average 40kph there, it would be unsafe to use it. He said that he wasn't interested in my opinions on safety and that I was legally obliged to use the cycle lane. (It's one of those segregated ones above road height and it's too short to be practical anyway).

It gets better - He said that if I encounter pedestrians or other obstructions on the cycle lane I should telephone the Gardai instead of breaking the law.

He asked for ID. I didn't have picture ID on me but said that I cpould produce a driving licence/passport later. He then stated that I was lucky that I didn't have my driving licence with me as he could have got points added to it for this cycling incident. Unbeliveable!

We should all start ringing balbriggan station to report people in cycle path. The Swords 8.30 group will have to use cycle lane from now on

I think they should monitor the road continuously - hopefully that should help protect my KOM (don't think anyone will be able to do it along the cycle path at 55kph)

Interestingly I use the by-pass rather than going through the village. If they are going to try and make cyclists use the cycle path I will just help congest the village more, probably inconveniencing motor vehicles (as the road is not suitable for overtaking) as well as the numerous people parking on the road and then trying to walk across it to the shops.

If you're legally obliged to use the cycle track (assuming it has correct signage and the proper painted lines), then the walkers are equally obliged not to use it and are equally in defiance of the law. He's going to be a busy Garda once he realises this.

AFAIK the signage there is incorrect and doesn't comply with the relevant SI. That was one of my arguments to him but he wanted proof which I didn't have to hand (obviously what cyclist carries SI's around with them!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,804 ✭✭✭✭tomasrojo

I think it's SI 273 or 274 of 1998. I'm not sure if saying something very specific like "Yes, Garda, it's all laid out in SI 273 of 1998" would sound cheeky and make your situation worse.

    EDIT: 274, it was.
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1998/en/si/0274.html
    14. (1) A cycle track shall be indicated by traffic sign number RUS 009 or RUS 009A provided in association with traffic sign number RRM 022 (continuous white line) or RRM023 (broken white line) which latter signs may be marked on the right-hand edge of the cycle track or on the right-hand and left-hand edges of the cycle track.

If Strava accepts the cycle path as the same segment, a southbound cyclist on the path won't have to do 55kph to beat the KOM.

Had a fantastic cycle early this morning and trying out a few hills I've not been up before. The Bohernabreena route into the Dublin Mountains is such a nice change from the normal Cruagh/Stocking Lane climbs, and it's so much quieter too. It was after seeing Jimm using that route on Strava that I decided to give it a go - I love that feature of Strava helping you get new ideas!

Came across what must have been the Mick Byrne on the way along Djouce - nice to see loads of people along there as it's sometimes quite quiet. I gave the climb in Rocky Valley a go for a laugh - my god that is one short/steep climb!

Added a few more climbs on the way back past Johnnie Foxes to the viewpoint. A nice change from the normal climbs anyway!:)

Very nice cycle today which took me from home in a loop through Woodenbridge, Avoca, Ballinaclash and over the hill to Ironbridge before heading home. Kindly souls sitting out with food and water for a Sportive that was in progress gave me some water on the hill above ironbridge, thanks guys. Should have brought me lighter bike. MTB was a bit heavy on these uphills.

tough day in the heat but very worthwhile. Killiney to Laragh and back via the r115 into enniskerry and then into glen cullen and descended home. managed to tag along into a small group for a good few km into enniskerry but lost them after i stopped for a well earned coffee. the climb from enniskerry to glen cullen is bloody sadistic nearly died. manged to complete the cycle in just under 4 hours.

This was enough to prompt my lazy *** to finally send a message to Varadkar re the mandatory use revocation. I know it won't get a response, but gotta try. At least someone might see the subject line. The more hassle DOT gets about this the better.

Re "said that I could produce a driving licence/passport later": do you mean that you were told to report to the station with a driving licence/passport:confused::confused::confused:
And does that mean they could still put points on your licence?

This was enough to prompt my lazy *** to finally send a message to Varadkar re the mandatory use revocation. I know it won't get a response, but gotta try. At least someone might see the subject line. The more hassle DOT gets about this the better.

Re "said that I could produce a driving licence/passport later": do you mean that you were told to report to the station with a driving licence/passport:confused::confused::confused:
And does that mean they could still put points on your licence?

    *spit, fume, outrage*

Envisages Wishbone Ash greeted at the station by Sergeant Pluck, who asks, "Is it about a bicycle?"

Have also sent an email to Varadkar. The more he gets the better.mad.gif
