Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

In the long run upgrading to an IP panel with free apps, free notifications and free remote access would be the cheapest option. As all these services only require an Internet connection you will never be tied to any provider either.
Just beware of companies trying to sell or over sell you subscription service for these.
Siemens, Risco and GSD provide all this for free.
I was pricing a job the other day where the customer was quoted €120 a year just to use an app to connect to the alarm.

No it will not effect you if using a GSM-P.
These systems use there own sim card. Nothing to do with Eircoms Phone service.

GSM is almost pointless unless it has heartbeat/keepalive

    blocker - 5 dollar :(

    I agree,
Very frequent polling. Looking into the setting on the new Siemens software you have the ability to set polling as high as you want.

Just came across this thread, never heard about fixed line SMS being phased out as currently don't have Eircom as our service provider on the fixed line so didn't get /probably won't get notice about the seice becoming redundant.

We sue the fixed line SMS of a SW812 and its very handy feature, so when the service disappears then looks like 2 options really?

    GSM-P unit to exisitng panel

Replace with a new control panel

What would the cost for either?

A voice dialler would be your best option.

Spotted this is the Eircom November roadmap document here

    Withdrawal Fixed SMS Service
eircom are withdrawing the Fixed SMS service as of the 30 June 2015 to all Operators.

It's on the bottom of page 24 in the November 2014 roadmap doc.

I take it you are comparing to a polling device?

Radio would be the hardest to block.
Polling devices work by missing so many polls but by the time that happens an intruder may be long gone.

They are all different and most situations will come down to cost and what the customer is looking for.
Multi paths is the best option to use.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭faolteam

    is Multi paths

GSM, Gprs, IP, Radio, digi/voice dialers, dual com. all devices that are used to monitor your alarm. If you use a combination of these its called multi paths.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭faolteam

which would be the cheapest ?

After the initial outlay on buying the device, IP with an app once internet is available in a premises is the cheapest.
Not the most secure with regards to using one path as could be off for a number of reasons.
Some will choose GPRS where internet or a line is not available.
Some will choose a GSM if they have no line either.
Some will choose a voice dialer if they just have a phone line.
Some will choose Radio where no line or internet is available also.
Dual com can also be used which polls to the monitoring station.
Its all about what suits a customer and budget.
Do they want to self monitor the system, do they want it monitored by a monitoring station.
To be honest every device used to monitor your alarm has flaws, that's why multi paths where available are used to back each other up.
I am not saying every system out there has this but with this becoming cheaper to do then its becoming more popular.

I got a letter from Eircom today announcing increases in every part of my contract plan, plus termination of the SMS service as of June 30th 2015.

    It'll be 'bye bye Eircom'.

A GSM would be the cheapest solution.
You can use a ready to go sim with the GSM.

Here is a link to the App.
For pricing an install you would need to contact local installers.
Here is a link to the PSA website of installers.

Prices can vary, you would need to contact local installers to compare prices for an installation.

Grand. But the equipment itself would be around how much for the above panel and LAN card? I couldn't see any prices on the website provided?

If you add installation, vat plus other costs the first price you received was great value.

If you ring a company to clear a blocked drain you will pay call out charge & an hourly rate
If you call an IT company out they also will charge by the hour & not cheap.

That is a very good price as that company
    1st Must collect your equipment
    2nd Drive to your premises
3rd Strip out your old alarm panel
4th Install your new control panel, test & commission
5th Do you an invoice , lodge your payment
    6th Give you a 3 year warranty

7th If it is a registered company they have the following expenses

    PSA Licence
    NSAI or EQA Licence
    Public & Product Insurance
    Stationery
    Bank Charges
    Account Fees
    Vehicle payments & servicing
    Tax. & Insurance
    Diesel
    Toll & parking expenses

There a lot of costs involved & you factor them all in that company has no big profit margin on your quotation

Ok if you asked an Electrican to change a fuse board what way do think there charges would be and their RECI licence is a lot cheaper than ours
    Just an example

You should get two more quotations for the same job and compare them .

Is the price on that list incorrect? How much does it cost to buy that panel?

That's convenient. You come on here making claims re the prices you post and you have nothing to back it up.
I would suggest that those prices have increased in the past couple of years. I would also suggest that they are exclusive of vat. No suppliers would create a price list that includes vat.
As advised, get a few quotes and see how you get on. The percentage of price related to the equipment price is irrelevant.
If I replace something that costs €10 should I charge you €15?
