Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not listed on front row but only a few players are. Whoever his agent is deserves a medal. Maybe we could send him when we need another trioka bailout. When I saw "Irishman Ryan signs for Agen" on RR I immediately thought Dominic or Donnacha!

However, given how Agen were promoted late maybe they cannot find better players. Look at the players London Welsh signed last year.

Are they going to sign Ruadhri Murphy next?

Awec, you need to organise a boards meetup to watch Ulster vs Saracens when John Lacey is inevitably the referee.

Am hearing that Ireland u19 (and full mens) 7's player Alex Kane (Exile- WImledon College) has joined Ulster acad/sub academy. Do not take it as gospel as am not yet sure.

During the RWC I'm guessing ye'll have

    FR: Herbst, Herring, ??
    SR: Franco, O'Connor, and Stevenson
BR: Faloon, Diack, Wilson, and Williams
    SH: Marshall
    OH: IH
    Centre: McCloskey, Marshall, Cave
Wing: one of Gilroy or Trimble, and Scholes
    FB: Ludik

Bit light in the pack but not bad overall

  • Registered Users Posts: 95 ✭✭bradders90

Sam Arnold will also probably feature in the centre at some point.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,219 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

He'll be doing well to get in ahead of any of those 3

    SH: Marshall, Rowley.
OH: IH, O'Hagan - if he's still here?
    Centre: McCloskey, Marshall, Cave

    FB: Ludik, Nelson

A good front row and second row when FVDM and O'Connor (if fit) are together plus the new guy signed from L.W. The back row is odd. Good players but not a good balanced combination.

Of course, but Arnold's already made 2 caps for Ulster, i'd be surprised if he doesn't make more next season, and the world cup time seems when he s most likely. Im not saying he's better than those 3 at all.

Back row and half backs are a major concern. The tight five and outside backs are grand. I suppose at least Marshall has it in him to perform well on occasions, even Humphreys can, albeit hose days are fewer and further between these days.

So which new signing are we looking forward to seeing the most in the new campaign?

Great to have Willie back as his fills a hole in the squad, although I hope he has lost his habit of missing the odd tackle in games. I don't really have any opinion of Rowley and Windsor, but I don't see either featuring much. The guy I'm intrigued by most is Peter Browne. Sounds like just what we need in terms of the positions he plays. Hopefully he delivers on the pitch.

As a side note I see Charlie boy starts for NZ against Samoa this week. Looks like a strong NZ selection as well so he is clearly well in with a shot at making the WC.

I am not excited by any of them. Roll on 16/17. :pac:

I see Andrew Trimble is progressing well with recovery - good news story.

There is universal agreement both from the print media and Joe Public on forums/blogs that he had a pretty good game. He is never going to be as destructive as a Julian Savea, but he seems to do the simple things well. A good player for you, whether a good signing is another matter given how much he is costing and your issues in the pack.

The NZ backline for the game realistically only had Carter who should be in the starting XV, I think Savea, B. Smith and Naholo will get the back 3 spots, but Charles remains in contention for the squad. Most people think Dagg's goose is cooked, so Charles has it all to play for in regards to Jane and Milner-Skudder.

    They're both Fijian really.
Naholo just moved to NZ as a teenager to go to a rugby school and is making his career there.
Never understand why players that are good enough to be selected for their native country would play for another country just for a better career instead of playing for your own country for your national pride.

I think you've answered your own question there.

(Why is this in the Ulster thread?)

You can't buy things with national pride.

Also, this is the Ulster thread, so I'm going to vanish now.

Which Ulster players are likely to go to the WC and what does it leave us with?

    Definites
    Best
    Henderson
    Pienaar
    Payne
    Bowe

    Probables
    Henry
    Jackson

    Maybes
    Trimble
    Tuohy

    Unlikely
    Gilroy
    Cave
    Herring

    I think that covers it.

    Black/Warwick
    Herring/Jackson/Andrew
    Herbst/Lutton/Ross
    Van Der Merwe/O'Connor/Stevenson/Browne
    Diack/Wilson/Faloon/Williams/Reidy/Taggart/Ross
    Marshall/Rowley
    Humphreys/Windsor
    McCloskey/Cave/Marshall/Arnold
    Gilroy/Scholes/Stockdale
    Ludik/Nelson

I think that is pretty much it for the WC.

Sean Reidy is an interesting one. He looked half decent in a couple of games early last season. However Ross was preferred to him later on so maybe that speaks volumes. Great to have Faloon back. Our back row has a tiny bit more depth now. Although that is offset by Wilson and Williams being a year older.

Jackson is a definite. Other than that I agree completely.

First game of the season is Ulster v Ospreys at Ravenhill.

Nice tasty one to start with.

Trip to Galway at Christmas makes for a pleasant change too.

I see a very reliable poster on UAFC has said Piatau is Wasps bound.

I hope he doesn't get too comfortable there.

Ah couldn't see those stripes at the side in the catwalk pictures.

    Be way nicer without them.

If you look at the club shop online the cheaper non "player jersey" has a completely different neckline. It looks hideous, and quite cheep.

They're the looser fit ones, I think, so anyone who can't squeeze into the proper one is left with an inferior looking shirt.

  • Administrators Posts: 54,109 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

They're a looser fit but a different material as well.

Player fit ones aren't really comfortable to be wearing leisurely. You sweat too much in it cause of the material.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,816 ✭✭✭✭bilston

I didn't realise Kingspan were the shirt sponsors as well. They'll be called Kingspan Ulster soon!

Not massively sold on the jerseys to be honest. But sure it's what's in them that counts!

That's why I like the away one, it has the look of a continental club ( I love how the French clubs do theirs ). White meh, but white is the 'Ulster colour' so white it'll probably be.

btw. There will be 3 jerseys as normal, the player tight one (dearest), kohilo (looks the same but looser, and lastly the cotton one that doesn't look a thing like the jersey. So try not to get kohilo mixed up with the cotton folks

On the website the Kohilo one is the one with a different neck line.

There's only it and the players one listed.
