RIP The RoverJames and of course, poor Tiddles

It was an enjoyable episode, the Multipla has got to be one of the ugliest cars ever designed.

:D Not our RJ. He's useful to have around (and almost definately prettier!)
But Multiplas i hate more than Micras. Multiplas must have been designed by a blind man.

My God the Fiat Multipla is the most hideous car ever made. Glad it blew up.
Bad comparison saying the Focus is too complicated for old people. It was the ST. No OAP is gonna drive one of those. They'll have the basic LX.

Range Rover vs Terramax Drone was impressive. Self driving vehicles are the future.

Source of the Nile next week should be good.

video of the testing and development from 2007. very interesting.
they've come a long way in 5/6 years.

The mk 4 golf was replaced in 2004 (9 years ago).

I have a 2002 vw bora (mk 4 golf with a boot) from new, no issues at all bar 2 doorlocks.

I've seen a few 06 MK4 estates on the net before, unsold cars or something Id guess?

They certainly have. In 50 years we'll all be saying to our grandkids.
"I remember when we drove cars ourselves"
And our grandkids will be saying "Shuttup granda. talking shite again"

in the video you can see how something rudimentary like going through a gate can confuse the early systems. a lot of refinement has been done.

IMO we're not really 'that' far from seeing these on the road, its only a step up from radar guided cruise control.
baby steps and all that :pac:

The estate is usually the last to be replaced on the Golf's.

So a MK4 estate could be bought new in 06?

In your own opinion of course;)

I had a bora for almost two years. While it was never a stunning looking car I wouldn't call it ugly. I put almost 70k miles on it without a single problem. I have had 3 mk4 based cars and never had problems with door locks or electrics on any of them for that matter. Same goes for the engine and gearbox.
    CianRyan wrote: »
Not to get personal but I'd definitely call them ugly.

I'd one for two years, did 50k miles in it in that time. It was comfortable, and reliable, but pretty plain looking, but I didn't have any major issues with it at all in the time I had it.

I'll give you ugly cars, Nissan Tiida (horrific) and the Corolla saloon (02-07)no design thought put into both.

On Top Gear I thought this was a good episode funny and interesting and Hamsters pulling the face to match that mini was brill.

Possibly. I seem to remember seeing an 07 one advertised at some stage on car zone. Most likely had been sitting up a while before being registered.

I was in a 2010 one recently as a back seat passenger.

    It was horrific.
No legroom (I've fairly long legs), and the suspension was like jelly, the slightest pothole and it jarred everyone in the car.

Put me off them for life. Didn't help that I'd a bad knee injury and restricted legroom caused me grief.

Lovely looking cars, with lots of ability but a serious -1 for me as a backseat passenger.

Sport I think, didn't pay much attention, as it was due to car seating for a funeral, I'm fairly certain sport was on the badge, there was about 14 inches legroom in the back.

The sport is disco based so a tad smaller than a full fat RR :)

Put me off them for life, couldn't walk for about two days due to existing injury, cramp, and the godawful suspension, not helped by the appalling driver, who has a hummer as a day to day vehicle.

I have to take the opposite view to you on Hammond.

That whole Mini thing was cringeworthy. All of his skits look incredibly faking with him just howling out some nonsense while on the other hand, Clarkson and May try to be witty.

The old person's car skit would have been much more entertaining if May had done it instead of Hammond.

The mother bought one new in late 2004. She got a very good deal on it because the Mk5 had been rolled out for everything except the estates, and they weren't expecting the Mk5 estate until mid-05 at the earliest.

Well I'm not usually a Hamster fan and I don't like the way he fawns over Clarkson, however I did think pulling the face was funny.

I'm not a fan of ripping perfectly good cars apart (Multipla) put what they did was funny especially Clarkson's new speedo.

Next week should be good the boys looking for the source of The Nile over 2 weeks.

Ok point taken, what I meant was the condition of the car was excellent irrespective of make or model.

The Multipla could have parts that never fail and run on a teaspoon of water but it would still be the most hideous looking thing ever

Second generation looked a lot better.

Not impressed with the new season so far, I think they are running out of ideas, and they are stretching every idea out as much as they can, there seems to be less and less content in the more recent shows

The first two or three episodes were very good and actually laughed at moments in them. The last two not so much.

I watched one of the newer episodes of fifth gear too and actually enjoyed it from a motoring perspective!

The new Range Rover is pretty impressive.

Though you would expect that for the price.
Looks like the version James drove is €160k on the Landrover website

Good to see Range Rovers are as capable as ever even if 99.9% will never see those conditions (and even less of a chance of me owning one )

More chance of owning an Oshkosh MTVR, British Army bound to be selling some soon :D

It's funny to see 10-11 year old Lianas on Autotrader for around a grand these days, I wonder how much Top Gear would get for their two models.

Yeah, but that would be sensible. :) Impreza was the decent choice while the other 2 were there for the entertainment/mishaps.

I thought the first part of tonight's special was great, really looking forward to next week. Alot more of the show focused on the cars (as it should be), compared to the India special last Christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,407 ✭✭✭positron

Missed last few weeks, but back in country just in time for the Africa special. Loved the first part.

I really thought James May would turn up a giant old Merc. It being Africa and all, that is one car you can by fixed everywhere in Africa not to mention the wood trim etc.

Very true, and i lost count of how many Landcruisers i saw in the film, about 10 alone in the 'president's motorcade', which are pretty much the only thing used outside of the cities in Africa.. but it would be too easy and not very entertaining to bring a vehicle built with African survival as part of its standard equipment. (each model tested for 6 months in the Australian outback)

I enjoyed it, if a slight bit predictable - an 850R - really?

Landcruisers in Uganda are only for NGOs, oil companies, ex-pats, high ranking politicians and the military.
The majority of vehicles are 20 year old saloons imported from Japan after at least 15 years of hard driving. Or else matatus, which are just hiaces converted into minibuses, some with 4wd.

I did a trip similar to what the TG team are doing two years, this episode just makes me want to go back!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,234 ✭✭✭darragh o meara

I wonder who actually goes out and buys the cars and ultimately where they end up? I'm sure Clarkson and May would both have picked something 4wd too. The impreza was a good choice but as said earlier the outback would have been the better car. Can't imagine they picked up the wrx estate for £1500. I went online looking online last night and couldn't find one for anything near that.

I had to laugh when they decorates the cars, I'm sorry but there is no effin way they done that themselves. Mays car with the workshop was my favourite btw.
