    Brilliant tune!

Possibly the most under-rated band ever. Were it not for The Beatles....

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,581 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

Were it not for The Beatles a lot of things would be very, very different.

Mad as it sounds, I think The Beatles are sometimes underrated. There really has never been anything even close to being in their league.

    Very true.
But I sometimes feel a bit sorry for The Kinks boys, can't help feeling they got buried a wee bit under the whole Beatlemania thing.
In any other era, Kinks would have been way more successful.
Well, the songs definitely stand the test of time!

They were amazing. No question about that.

Hi there, Dolly and Kenny are back in their box for a while as the country season is over. The Friday ToyShow alternative is a melting pot of Pink Floyd and Marshall Amps ...

    Thursday BBC4

    7.30pm & 1am - Top of The Pops 1979
(It's a weird one where there was a BBC strike, and the presenter does a voiceover but can't be seen in vision.) Peter Powell presents an edition first broadcast November 29, 1979. Featuring performances by the Gibson Brothers, Police, the Tourists, Pink Floyd, Blondie, Thin Lizzy, Rose Royce, the Moody Blues, Skids, Status Quo and Dr Hook. Plus, dance sequences by Legs & Co

1.35am - Classic Albums: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Damn the Torpedoes
The making of Damn the Torpedoes by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which was released in 1979 and went on to occupy the number two spot in America for seven weeks. The programme examines how Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair and Stan Lynch created their third album alongside co-producer Jimmy Iovine and engineer Shelly Yakus in near secrecy while fighting their record company for creative independence

    Thursday TG4

12.10am - Later with Jools Holland
New York-based rock stalwarts Sonic Youth return to the studio to play tracks from their album The Eternal. Plus, electropop band Depeche Mode drop by to perform songs from Sounds of the Universe. Also appearing are Lily Allen, with a rendition from her second album It's Not Me, It's You, blues musician Taj Mahal, and American vocalist Raphael Saadiq

BBC4 Friday - Pink Floyd / Marshall Amps / Guitar Riffs

    9pm & 1am - A Pink Floyd Miscellany: 1967-2005
Footage from throughout the band's career, including performances of Arnold Layne, Another Brick in the Wall (Part Two), Grantchester Meadows and Cymbaline, as well as highlights from the band's reunion at the 2005 Live 8 concert in London

10pm & 2am - Play it Loud: The Story of the Marshall Amp
In the early 1960s drum shop owner Jim Marshall launched the loudest amplifier in the world at a point in time widely perceived to be the birth of rock. Young musicians like Clapton and Hendrix rushed to adopt the revolutionary `Marshall sound', and the electric guitar spoke for a new generation, while stacks and walls became an essential backdrop at concerts. The company was rescued from financial meltdown by comic exposure in the 1984 movie This is Spinal Tap, and the electronic boxes were propelled to iconic status. This documentary charts the amp's history, with contributions from rock musicians Pete Townshend, Lemmy and Slash, plus an interview with the founder himself

    11pm & 3am - Pink Floyd:Wish You Were Here
Documentary exploring the creation of the rock band's ninth studio album Wish You Were Here, which was released in 1975 and topped the charts in the UK and America. The record reflects on the legacy of Syd Barrett, who left Pink Floyd in 1968 and is eulogised in the song Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Featuring contributions by members Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason

Midnight : Great Guitar Riffs at the BBC (again)
A compilation of archive clips and performances which include some of the most memorable guitar riffs of all time. Featuring Jimi Hendrix, the Kinks, Cream, AC/DC, the Smiths, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Pixies and the Stone Roses

    Saturday BBC4

10.40pm - Imagine: Dame Shirley Bassey: The Girl from Tiger Bay
Alan Yentob celebrates Shirley Bassey's 2009 album The Performance, the David Arnold-produced record that was her first studio release in two decades, by examining a selection of her greatest archive performances. He also meets songwriters who contributed to the album, including Gary Barlow, Pet Shop Boys, Manic Street Preachers, KT Tunstall and frequent James Bond composer John Barry

11.40pm - Shirley Bassey at the BBC
A compilation of archive performances by the singer first shown to mark her 76th birthday - some 60 years after her vocal talent first achieved public recognition. Featuring footage from Show of the Week, The Shirley Bassey Show, the 2007 Glastonbury Festival and the star's Electric Proms show in 2009. Songs include Goldfinger, Big Spender and Diamonds are Forever

    12.40am - Top of The Pops 1979
    (as above)

1.15am - Sounds Of The Seventies
A collection of rock anthems from the decade, featuring archive performances by artists including Alice Cooper, the Faces, Nazareth, Bad Company, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath

    Sunday BBC4

9pm - Blondie: One Way or Another
Profile of the pop group founded by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, one of the world's most successful bands to be fronted by a woman, which first rose to fame in the mid-1970s. The programme features interviews with former members and fellow performers including Iggy Pop, Shirley Manson, Tommy Ramone, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, who discuss Blondie's eclectic brand of music. Mark Radcliffe narrates

So there you go. I didn't know that Marshall Amps was saved by Spinal Tap. If they had made all their amps go to eleven, maybe they would have sold a few more!

Ooooh, Shirley Bassey..... the Tom Jones progs were brilliant, can't see why the SB ones shouldn't be even better!

Sadly I have a VERY early start, involving a boat, on Sunday morning, so they'll have to be watched on some other occasion with the obligatory glasss(es) of vino......

    OOeerrr! Annie Lennox in leather.

The Tourists eventually had a megabustup with their record company Sire...and the rest is history.

Waterloo Sunset the best song of the Sixties for my money. I'm a big Beatles fan, and overall their output is much better than the Kinks, but my God, that song...as close to perfection as you can get, songwise.

Nice compilation of Pink Floyd performances on now ... worth taping the repeat at 1am if you like that sort of thing.

Wait a sec, there was a whole show about Marshall amps?? How the hell did i miss that?

I think i read Pink Floyd and lost concentration.

Ah no. Ah well, as I said up there

I think you would like it. The contributors are like a Guitar All Star Selection. And the Amp talk is good fun.

I think it is the same compilation as last week. Lazy, Lazy BBC.

I honestly can't believe I missed that Marshall show. Marshall amps are one of the greatest things in the world. And there's me half watching the feckin toy show. Grrrrr!

I know nothing stays the same, but if you're willing to play the game - it's coming around again :)

(Apologies to Carly Simon, I went for the excellent Ash cover version instead)

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,581 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

And now Ash are covering my guilty pleasure Carly Simon song?

    Man, I'm missing EVERYTHING today!

    :-(:-(:-(:-D

Ah man, that song ticks every box. Love Ash, Love Coming Around Again.

Here's another Ash cheesey cover classic

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,581 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

    Well, that's a strange clip!

Are Ash still going? Amazingly I've never actually seen them play, even though they seemed to play every weekend for a few years.

Used to love them. Still do, i suppose.

(Slightly coincidentally, i just watched that new Star Wars trailer. It had that Tie Fighter sound from the start of that Ash album in it.)

Oh yeah, new Star Wars. It's hard to keep up with it.

I suppose Ash's appeal has become more selective recently, as they say. But they are still one of my favourite bands. I've seen them lots, they always put on a good show. They played Whelans and The Academy in Dublin in the last few years, I really enjoyed both shows. If you like them, I'd highly recommend a trip to their live shows. Lots of hits, one of those "I know more of their songs than I thought I did" bands.

Your man Tim Wheeler is doing solo work at the moment but I'm sure they'll be coming around again (coming around again, coming around again ...!)

Defo gonna keep an eye out for them.

Kung Fu was one of my favourite songs. Largely because of the tune, but i could totally relate to the message of those lyrics. :-D

I have a decent Marshall amp.

For once in a documentary like this, all of the positive soundbites are true.

You can plug any old piece of crap into it, and it just sounds magic.

The final two episodes of 'Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways' are back on BBC Four next Sunday (7th. Dec) at 10.25pm :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 71,763 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

'The Girl From Tiger Bay' is an awesome song...loving that John Barry-esque symphonic swoop - written by The Manics, no less :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

I know I always post that Rock Profiles spoof of Shirley Bassey, but it's easy to forget what a fine singer and performer she is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,379 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Totp 1979 turning out some good tunes....well apart from the Quo that is!!

I really enjoyed the Shirley Bassey programmes last night.

I was just thinking her life story would make a good movie, and apparently there was a 2011 BBC drama Shirley starring Ireland's Ruth Negga. I've never seen it, hopefully it gets a repeat.

In 2012, Digital Spy reported that there were plans to make a Big Screen release about her life, but it doesn't seem to have happened (yet).
