How can you limit access based on age? Isn't that illegal?

If you're living in those reckless 48 months between your 18th and 22nd birthday, step right on up. If you're not, sorry; don't hate.

If it was then it would be illegal to limit the sale of alcohol, tobacco and other items to under age citizens would it not? ;)

The Equal Status Act bans discrimination to anybody buying goods, using services, obtaining accommodation and attending educational establishments on the basis of age (among other things).

I'm reminded of an episode of Friends where Chandler's ad campaign was that the rollerskates were "not for adults".

Filled out the form to get a new sim on their site, no question of age, it would appear to be a marketing ploy :pac:

It is not a marketing ploy by o2 its simply a Mobile Network Virtual Operator, operating on the o2 network. It is unrelated..................

It is basically o2 though. Owned by Telefonica which o2 is also a part of.

Telefonica is an international mass media group, so its not O2. For example O2 will not be accountable for their revenue?

Well, they're not a mass media group. Telefonica are one of the world's largest traditional fixed line and mobile operators.

They are the Spanish equivalent of Eircom or BT but they are enormous and have a huge global footprint and revenues of about €60bn Euro / year and 299.7 million customers. So, basically an absolutely giant organisation by any standards.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens to them when that brand comes into conflict with the Equal Status Act.

It seems a little silly to me.

The site also comes across as sleazy rather than 'fun'. My immediate impression when I clicked the link was oh, that must be spam link that hijacked my browser. This appears to be the landing page for some cheap and nasty porno spam site.

Text from the free SIM link :
Cheap and easy sim card seeks 18-22 year old to share some wild nights and maybe more. Interested?
Fill in your details and we'll pop a sim in the post.

    Also interesting:
    From terms and conditions:
3.2 We reserve the right to limit the availability of the 48 Services for people in certain age categories (details of the age categories which qualify to use the 48 Services are published on www.48months.ie).
So, basically age discrimination. It'll be interesting to see if that's compatible with the Equal Status Act.
4.8 We do not offer Age Restricted Services as part of the 48 Services.
“Age Restricted Services” means services of an adult nature which are generally specified for use by people aged 18 or over.

Why not? You are marketing this to adults i.e. 18 to 22 year olds. To block their access to these services is also a bit weird.

O2/Telefonica : could you not have just launched GiffGaff Ireland ?!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

They don't discrimate on your telling them what age you are. Unless you try porting to them which is most ill advised given their T&C's. Take the 089 number and be happy. :)

I think I'll be giving it a skip!

More interesting MVNOs launching in March :)

Email info@equality.ie and complain about age discrimination, the more people who do the more likely Telefonica will be forced to change things.

Are you talking about BlueFace? or are you aware of another MVNO launching?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,265 ✭✭✭✭ted1

It's the norm in Ireland for a perent company to have mobile subsidiaries eircom have emobile and meteor, Telefonica have o2 and 48.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭jay93

Would it not be better if Telefonica improved o2's price plans instead of leaving o2 dead with useless plans?

Also there is 48,more mobile, blueface, and another to be confirmed MVNO setting up in Ireland.

So we will now have O2,Vodafone,Meteor,3,E-mobile,Postfone,Tesco Mobile,48,Blueface,More Mobile.

Very interesting stuff sudden rush of MVNO market in Ireland this year.

Plus Lycamobile Ireland (soon) and UPC (sometime this year) and there are clearly whispers/rumors of other MVNOs on the way.

We now have 12 mobile operators including pending launches.

Nah. Telefonica, like most big incumbents, think they are more profitable by taking advantage of inertia.

Eh, not to be pedantic or anything, but it's not the norm. Eircom has Meteor/Emobile as dual branding. However, until this 48 launch, nobody else has done a split brand/sub brand in Ireland.

Vodafone and Three are single brand operators.
