Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So here is my next little project it's a 70/80's Glastron SSV178 with a 115 hp mercury tower of power
I think I'll call her Old's Cool hunter 
I have bought the boat just going on the photos "something you should never do":eek: but she looks complete and as she has been stored in a barn for a number of years she may not have a rotten stringers,transom and floor I'll know a bit more when I go to pick her up tomorrow I just hope the trailer is up to the trip back from Galway.

You have to look under the dirt and dust there is a shiny new penny in there .
Steve and Heidi beat me to it with glutton and energy!! Possibly a shiny penny there but I saw straw, heard of a barn, so there must be chickens... hope you don't have a poop deck! Anyway, that penny ain't legal tender, no matter how shiny, decimals now ruling the roost.;)
Is that carpet on the cockpit sole? How does one describe nautical "rug" when it is wall-to-wall? Transom-to-bow? Bulkhead-to-bulkhead?
Looking forward to seeing the progress over the winter, don't let it keep you off the water this summer!0 -

Well she made it home safe and sound and to my surprise when I picked her up the owner had taken her out of the shed and given her a wash, maybe he should have done that before he put her up for sale not too bad looking.
And of course I had to play with this little baby

Don't judge a book by it's cover :eek: Well I half expected this the transom is rotten so I'm going to split the boat in half and replace it along with the stringers, I was hopping to get a bit of use out of the boat this summer but that is so bad I'm not going to take the chance "not with my look"

To be honest Fergal, I'm glad you bought it rather than some unsuspecting newbie wanting a thrill only to end up with the engine overtaking the hull and becoming a drowning statistic somewhere in the Irish sea..
At least you know what you're doing and it will be seaworthy before getting it wet again.0 -
A bit of stripping out today, why o why would someone put chipboard down as a floor in a boat
they didn't even try to seal it :roll eyes:
A guy in a builders providers tried to convince me to use chipboard rather than marine ply for my new floor recently. Said marine ply was too expensive and wasn't really needed.
Maybe the owner of your Glastron was swayed by someone like him.

I'll do my best James so far the stringers look good but the cross beams and the keel board are rotten along with everything in the transom. I'm going to try and save the metal flake paint but it's not easy to restore and will be hard to get it back to bright blue as you can feel the flakes if you rub your hands along it if it can't be saved I will paint over it or I might even try a vinyl wrap :roll eyes: not much to show today rain kept stoping play.

Well thats one use for a mobility hoist :eek: I used it more to keep the engine balanced than to lift it, to take the engine off I lowered the trailer with the jockey wheel placed wooden blocks under the skeg and then lifted the front of the trailer up till the transom was lower than the clamps then pulled the boat forward.
That one 2 minute bolt that snaps and turns into a 2 hour bolt
I used the stand I got for the V8
More holes than a golf course.
A bit of a mess.

As the transom board doesn't go the full width of the boat I was able to get away with just cutting away the splash well
I'll just paint a stripe or use some timber moulding to hide the repair.
I'm going to make some plywood stringers here with knees that go up the transom for extra strenght
Dont think I will be able to get a template off this one.:eek:

I cut out a cardboard template of the transom.
Then epoxied two prices of 3/4" marine ply together and marked out with the template making it 1/2" bigger top and bottom to allow for the offset of the transom when I cut it,side on it looks like a parallelogram.
To finish off I gave it a few coats of epoxy then covered it in fibreglass cloth.

A bit of extra support for the transom I still have a bit more to do on each side.
Floor in and epoxied coated. I planned on putting a grey rubber backed carpet down but today I found a remnant of black rubber back for €15 so I grabbed it
After all that hard work I needed some retail therapy "My style" my wallet wasn't too impressed

Not much I could do on the boat today with the rain so I dropped the gearbox to change the impeller.
A good bit of wear on the blades and the o ring was broken.
I also started to removed the old decals using a heatgun and then thinners to get the glue off it turned out to be a very messy and sticky job.
After a quick lick of paint, just waiting on the new decals to arrive.
As the work is getting a bit much for me on my own I decided to drop out to the DSPCA in Rathfarnham and pick up this little girl, not as nice as a mercury face plate but close enough

Cheers, nothing fancy for this one just Halfords gloss black over the etching primer "you need this for aluminium" and then a few coats of clear lacquer.
I decided to go with a new water pump kit as the top looked liked it had overheated so better safe than sorry. I also picked up a new prop it had a 13x19 but I went for a 13x21 as I think it will be better for all round boating instead of water sports where the 19 would give a better hole shot.

I'm not much hassle really A hole shot is when you are taking off from standing still it's handy for getting a skier up on the water quick instead of pulling through the water and ripping their arms off. I already have an adopted 20 year old girl although she was 3 months old when I adopted her now she is in collage and using up all my boating funds so thanks but no thanks

If you mean the two bits of the transom yes after they were glued I covered them in cloth. The glue is a thickened epoxy called SP 130 it's a pinky brown when mixed and I just found it handier than mixing epoxy resin and filler.
