Sounds promising.... Bryan Fuller has a very good CV, so I have high hopes for this.
EXCLUSIVE: In its first U.S. sale, recently launched L.A.-based indie studio Gaumont International Television has set up hourlong drama Hannibal at NBC. Written and executive produced by Bryan Fuller and executive produced by Martha De Laurentiis, the project, based on the iconic literary and film character Hannibal Lecter, was bought by NBC preemptively. It marks a reunion between the network and GIT CEO Katie O’Connell, who previously served as NBC head of drama. Fuller is developing a script against a 13-episode commitment, meaning that the project won’t go through a pilot stage but straight to series if NBC brass like the script. The network has a short window after receiving Fuller’s script to pick it up. In a model similar to that for NBC’s midseason drama series The Firm, GIT, the U.S. arm of French film studio Gaumont, will fund the potential series by a mix of a U.S network license fee and international sales. The project was taken to MIPCOM last month, and a number of international deals are already in the works.

I hear that Fuller, a well-known foodie as evidenced by his previous series Pushing Daisies, loved the dark, sick side of Hannibal, who tends to feast on his victims. (Who can forget the line: “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti”?) De Laurentiis — who has produced the Hannibal Lecter features Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising — and CAA brought the rights to GIT, which opened its doors at the beginning of September. O’Connell brought in Fuller, with whom she had had a long relationship going back to the time she was at NBC and WME-repped Fuller worked on the network’s drama Heroes. (O’Connell also bid on Fuller’s Pushing Daisies, which ultimately went to ABC.)

A show about about a cannibal on NBC, that's most definitely not going to work... Might have been interesting if a cable network picked it up..

When I read the title I thought it was going to be about the Hannibal that attacked Rome.

Was expecting another series like Sparatacus, Rome, etc.

I hope it's sponsored by a suitable Chianti wine producer, they'll make a mint.

    http://www.digitalspy.ie/ustv/news/a397136/hannibal-lecter-tv-series-adds-wonderfalls-star-caroline-dhavernas.html

Caroline Dhavernas has joined the cast of NBC's Hannibal.
The forthcoming drama - based on the Robert Harris novel Red Dragon - will chart the early days of the relationship between FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and serial killer Hannibal Lecter.
Off the Map actress Dhavernas will play Dr Alana 'Al' Bloom, a protege of Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), TVLine reports.
A psychology teacher at Georgetown University, Bloom introduces Lecter to the FBI's Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne).
34-year-old Dhavernas previously starred in short-lived Fox series Wonderfalls in 2004 and also appeared in 2010 mini-series The Pacific.
Hannibal - exec produced by Wonderfalls co-creator Bryan Fuller - has been described as "psychological" and "experimental" by its star Hugh Dancy.
The series is expected to premiere on NBC in 2013.

Camelot actress Lara Jean Chorostecki has joined the cast of the Peacock’s upcoming Hannibal Lecter drama series in a role previously played by Stephen Lang in 1986′s Manhunter and Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2002′s Red Dragon, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Chorostecki will portray Freddie Lounds — aka Freddy Lounds, the sleazy tabloid reporter played by Lang and Hoffman on the big screen — in NBC’s contemporary take on the characters from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel.

    http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/58601/cast-addition-puts-asian-food-menu-hannibal

Actress Hettienne Park has joined the series to portray Beverly Katz, a bright-eyed yet weary crime scene investigator.

Park's character specializes in working with fibers. She’s part of a team of three who piece evidence together. When she first encounters Will (Hugh Dancy), she confronts the criminal profiler about his unusual role with the FBI and flags the special treatment he receives. While the duo initially clashes, their relationship could potentially become a romantic one. Mads Mikkelsen will play the psychiatrist-turned-serial killer in the 13-episode dramatic take from “Pushing Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller.

Congrats, Aunt Vivian, on getting out of the house! Ellen Greene, who played one of Chuck’s shut-in aunts on Bryan Fuller‘s Pushing Daisies, is reuniting with the show’s creator on his new gig Hannibal, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Greene will take on the recurring role of Mrs. Komeda, a novelist and member of Boston’s cultural elite. She’s also a pal of the titular cannibal, Dr. Lecter (played by Casino Royale‘s Mads Mikkelsen) which – we assume – should protect her from becoming his lunch.

I love the movies and books (yes even Hannibal) so this could be interested, Mikkelsen is excellent but I'm not sure of the other casting, or why change Bloom to be a female character, its clearly a male character in the books, even if he's mostly talked about instead of being directly in it afaik. He may have a role in Red Dragon, been a while since I read them. It seems to be messing with the canon of the books as well so not sure how it will turn out, NBC will prob make a balls of it.

You were expecting the Carthaginian commander? Come to think of it, that would make for a better show.

So it'll be in the slot so rapidly vacated by Do No Harm...

You can understand why almost everyone who has posted on that link isn't happy.

First trailer. Pretty short, but sets a good tone I think.

Pre-empting the inevitable Dower "started last night" bump..

.. completely forgot Bryan Fuller was involved with this, until I read the barrage of good reviews... then I knew there was clearly someone very talented involved.

    Looking forward to watching.

Fridays are turning into a great TV night. Elementary, New Girl, Parks & Rec, Person of Interest and now this which looks like quality as well! All I need now is a few good beers :)

I really enjoyed this, great cast. Completely pisses over The Following.

    Mild spoilers ahead.
Going from the first episode it seems each episode may turn into a case of the week. Hopefully it doesn't go that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,143 ✭✭✭D-FENS

Not always crazy on the monster of the week format, but I'll give this a go.
I'm fearful they will just be stealing the basic plot of RD and SOTL, where the good doctor offers his advice to help catch other killers, only this time not from behind bars and without the FBI knowing the full extent of his expertise’s.
I am interested to see how they prolong Graham and Lector's relationship before his arrest, if it just consists of Hannibal sounding off clever metaphors to give Graham clues while he nods with approval, it could get tiresome quite quickly.
But the other series that comes to mind in a reimaging of a famous movie franchise is the Sarah Connor Chronicles, and I have to say I enjoyed what achieved with that (Before it was cut short), so it's possible here for sure.
Anyone hear when it's starts on Sky Living?
    Also like the episode names..
    1 "Apéritif"
    2 "Amuse-Bouche"
    3 "Potage"
    4 "Œuf"
    7 "Entrée"
    13 "Savoureux"

Graham and Lectors scenes together were very good. I won't say too much in case I spoil anything.

Generally enjoyed it. Better than The Following, which lumbered from one bad scene to the next. Thought the middle parts were the best. Of course, TV diagnosis du jour means Graham's autistic - thought they did a pretty good job with his anxiety. The relationship between him and Hannibal looks interesting and entertaining. Not so keen on the victim of the week business. Didn't think it was impactful as say, Forbrydelsen or The Bridge, though both of those are one ongoing case, their storytelling sensibility is different.

freaky, didn't know what was going on for half of it, could you not just look at lecter and know he's a pyscho,

thats 3 serial killer shows this season

    A couple questions on the first episode;
Did Lector kill the girl to help Graham?
Did he warn the killer to draw him out?

The girl found in the field was missing her lungs which Lector was cutting up and then seen eating in a following scene. I also got the impression some leftovers were in the breakfast he shared with Graham.

I think he warned the killer more to mess with Graham's head.

I just saw this pop up online and watched it knowing nothing about it. At first I thought the main character was supposed to be Hannibal up until Hannibal showed up.

It's interesting in that vague, I don't really know what's going on here sort of way.

It seems Hannibal is just setting scenes to confuse the detectives rather than having an MO?

Is the main character actually FBI? At the start it seemed he wasn't but towards the end he's armed and identifying himself as an FBI agent. Was he just retired or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭sham69

really loved it, big fan of mads so loved his take on hannibal.
Only negative thing I have to say is it was a bit hard to understand what he was saying sometimes.
Apart from that, very strong opening episode, really looking forward to more.

In TV land, I think they say people like him are consultants to the FBI rather than agents - like Walter in Fringe. I can't remember what if anything was said in the pilot, but yeah, Will had a gun ready to go pretty sharp ish when he needed it.

This is explained in the 1986 film Manhunter (essential viewing for anyone who hasn't seen it). I'm going to spoiler this just in case it happens to be a story thread in this show:
In Manhunter, Graham is an FBI agent who has been off sick / put out to pasture due to mental problems arising from delving too deep into the mind of a previous serial killer. Hence the warnings in the new show about not letting him get "too close" to the case. As it happens, in the film, the previous case was in fact Lecter so looks like they've just taken some of the plot points for the show.

I've mixed feelings about it now, but I'll give it a few more episodes, anyway. I'm not convinced it's stepped away from the likes of CSI et al that much, though I think some elements are making it stand on its own merits. The body garden seemed particularly gruesome. I think the weekly killers need a bit more background and motivation, not just insight from Will or digging up evidence, but I know the show is about him (and Hannibal, quite charming this week), so the other killers will fall secondary to him, which I don't mind, really.

I didn't like the tabloid hack, not that we're meant to, but the scene where they briefly handcuffed her was little OTT. Plus, Jack Crawford needs some better dialogue.

After watching the first two episodes and I really like it.

Definitely felt different to your normal crime type drama.. and some of the visuals in it are superb.

Going to give this a watch, I'm enjoying the show so far but some bits are a bit cringe. Nice to have something fresh to watch every week again. All I watch is crime/cop shows!
