Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    You might try:

    It ran out of juice....

(to be fair that may not work on an eleven year old, but I've a seven year old that thinks it is comedy gold)

Changing chain and cassette - Should I change the cables too?

If it's been a year or more, then yes.

My tourer, in close to daily use, has had the same cables, inner and outer, for about five years now. I really should change them, especially the brake cables. Shifting and all that is fine. I do squirt a bit of oil down the outers when I clean the bike. Seems to prolong life.

I just changed the wheels after five years too. I had intended to change them two years ago, but I bought a house and then had a cash flow problem of enormous magnitude.

The rims deformed under the tyre levers when I installed some new gatorskins. That's how you really know it's time for new wheels.

Cables are one of things that deteriorate so slowly that you barely notice it's happening, like your eyesight. Eventually the outers get gunged up and the two parts grate on eachother, increasing friction, but in daily use you'll barely notice.
Switch the cables out for a new set and it'll feel like a new bike, silky smooth.

Back in the day, before I did proper maintenance (long before this enforced maintenance hiatus I find myself in now), I once had a brake cable snap on me in traffic. I definitely do not advocate leaving them for five years!

Ditto, had both of mine snap (well shred and then snap) on me one day, right before I went into the side of a white van. I pulled and the cable snapped, the van hadn't indicated but it was clear at the junction so I presumed he was going straight through, he wasn't, pulled a U turn and I luckily managed to turn enough to make it a glancing blow.

Scared the **** out of the guy but completely my fault.

It's a very easy and simple task and should take no more than ten minutes to change your cables.

Apt for this time of the year, and considering the discussion going on about the Giro at the moment, but I noticed during the week that Clean Spirit was added to Netflix, a documentary following Argos Shimano in the 2013 Tour and their determination to be a clean team.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/cycling/clean-spirit--in-the-heart-of-the-tour-review-joy-and-agony-in-the-worlds-biggest-bike-race-9915938.html

Edit: I just noticed it was mentioned in the Books/Films thread but I'll leave it here anyway in case someone like myself missed it there.

Just watched it myself this evening, it's a brilliant documentary and show the positive side of cycling for the most part. Some really insightful stuff from behind the scenes. A quote from one of riders after the Orica Green Edge bus caused confusion over where the finish was to be had me cracking up.

    Thoroughly recommended.

If it is in checked luggage there should be no problems.
However if it is in your hand luggage there may be questions asked.

Not in hand baggage, checked baggage I am not sure. Where are you going, would it be easier to buy on arrival?

  • Registered Users Posts: 95 ✭✭astraj

Just had a quick look on DAA website

    http://www.dublinairport.com/gns/at-the-airport/airport-security.aspx

Checked luggage should not be any problem.

    Hand luggage however
Compressed air and CO2 guns, such as pistols, pellet guns, rifles and ball bearing guns
    e) Signal flare pistols and starter pistols
    f) Bow, cross bows and arrows
    g) Harpoon guns and spear guns

I had them confiscated from the bike box by security on a return flight from Germany.

(In saying that, it's only happened once in many flights with the bike).

Why would you clean a bike? Clean it? Puzzled!

Lily looks good - the 20 minutes is a biiiig difference from current ones, and with any luck the price will coast gently downwards and land somewhere affordable.

Apparently it doesn't have collision avoidance.
Lily does not have a collision-avoidance system yet, however. So the company recommends that people fly it in open spaces only. "We would love the user to go through a dense forest, because you could get some awesome shots," said Bradlow, "but the technology is just not there yet."

I cleaned my bike last week for the first time since I bought it.

    Cleaning is bad.

I do a bit, nothing massive though, max rides are 2 to 2.5h. Haven't use strava in a long time!

I've taken CO2 cannisters in my bike box on many occasions through Dublin Airport and have never been asked about them.

Only got through the first 15 minutes (had to go elsewhere not because I couldn't watch it). Have to say, the power of a select viewpoint is interesting. I had taken the view of the shoulder from Cavendish was just him being a sprinter and defending his line, but looking at the Argos camera and the select cuts of him before the race, it looked like Cavendish was as guilty as f*ck.

I will watch the rest but as a question, do you really think the documentary is impartial or non biased?

Seen it too just few days ago - interesting how Kittel went from yes its Cavs fault right after the crash to completely opposite conclusion at the end of the movie.

I think you could say Cavendish was just him being a sprinter and defending his line but not when it resulted in the other guy hitting the ground.

Interesting to see daily life of the team during the tour, my wife thought Kittel wasnt a nice guy.

    Another Kerry accident - I laughed unkindly…

The other Kerry, poor lad, apparently hit a kerb and came off and smashed his femur, having already had a hip replacement (ouch). He went back to the US for treatment, not something I'd choose myself, but Americans are odd that way, and I suppose you want your own specialist in scary circumstances like that.

He sounds like a pretty dedicated cyclist:

Took a lot of effort not to get on the bike today. The weather helped.

Sitting at 891 for May just 9km short of 900 is not nice when you have OCD.

I'm not the only one? Right?

Have beer to distract me now.

Don't think beer would go down too well at petrol stations to alleviate the whole rounding off the digits at the pumps though! :/

Since my cat is no longer available to discuss this type of stuff, you lot are going to have to put up with it.

    hashtag:something.
