OK, fair enough, comparing GBB to Moortgat Duvel is a bit unfair, as you say Duvel have huge economies of scale.

And I'd say that scale drives costs per unit down more than we think.

I know my local offie very well and he said when noreast were in he literally said it was double the cost wholesale to him, so I wonder if there is much margin @ 5.70 a bottle

Well deserved beer of the year, great innovation from the lads in Galway Bay, and there is more to come from them in 2014

Well, presumably all the bottles for off-sales go from the brewery straight to Noreast's warehouse in Dundalk. Any that make it back to Galway are probably coming from there.

Has anyone tasted this imperial stout yet? I like most of Galway Bay's beers, but they're inconsistent enough that I wouldn't drop €7.50 on a bottle unless I'd heard or read some exceptional reviews of it first.

Off licence prices of 5.50 to 7.00 have been mentioned, I presume for 50 cl.

I just bought a 50 cl bottle in a pub for 6 euro.

If they can do it at that price and offies can barely beat it then Noreast would have a lot of explaining to do if I was the owner of an offie who stocked the beer.

€6 for a bottle in a pub is a great price. You could easily pay that for a standard O'Hara's bottle in Dublin City Centre.

Yeah it's a great price for that beer.
Either the pub has no margin on it, offies are taking the piss or the distributor is mugging everyone else and giving this specific pub a deal.

most probably this, I remember getting Lean Folainn for 4.50 a bottle in a pub, it was priced at the same point as the other OH Stout and Red - just a mistake.

Having seen pubs selling other Noreast beers at ridiculous prices in the last while I reckon it's more likely that the pub got a very hefty discount.

As volumes are small, I don't think there's a volume discount.

I suspect the proprietor just felt that he couldn't charge more - it's a psychological price point, maybe.

I have no proof of this, just a feeling.

Here are other prices in the pub:
Tuborg = 350
Guinness = 420, I think
Guinness ES bottle = 420
Draught Kinnegar Scraggy Bay IPA = 450
Draught Donegal amber ale = 450

This is possible. He might have just decided "sure feck it, I've only got a case, if I price it high it wont sell, small margin is better than idle stock".

LF is only about 5 cent more expensive wholesale than the red or regular stout.

I forgot to add, I also have a "craft beer card", which gets me a free pint with every ten bought.

So a 4.50 pint of Donegal amber ale or Kinnegar Scraggy Bay IPA is effecttively priced at 4.05.

The card also includes bottles. So in theory, OFAF could be priced at 6.00 less 10% = 5.40.

Just tried this and it is the closest thing to Heady Topper you can get in Ireland, with Dirt Wolf by Victory close second. Amazing

It’s probably slight more balanced and swings between malty and hoppy but they are very very similar. They both use Simcoe and I heard they had some Vermont style yeast. OFAF is a little stronger too, but if you want to know the taste of heady topper, Of Foam and Fury is very close.
