What happens if you decide to get rid of a landline phone? We are thinking of it, but will sky+ stop working or what?

I currently have a Silvercrest STB, (bought in Lidl) which works fine.
I'd like to get a HD stb though, so

    1. Which is a good, reliable box to buy, doesn't need to be top of the range, and

    2. Where can I buy it?

(hope this is in the right thread)

Hi, I had a Sky subscription and had to cancel it due to hard times and all the levies.
Can I just purchase a FTA box on ebay and connect it up to my sky dish easily and get the reg english channels?
Can my current sky box be reconfigure to recieve FTA channels?

Is there any difference between the €40 boxes on ebay, and will they all work here in Ireland?

    Any info greatly appreciated

Can my current sky box be reconfigure to recieve FTA channels?

Just turn off the power and remove the Sky card - turn on your Sky box and you should get all the Uk channels. You can add Five to your "Other Channels". You pay Sky one month in advance, so you should have all your normal subscription for up to 30 days after you cancel Sky.

Did Sky make an offer ? - friends of mine were offered standard Sky package including Irish channels for less than half price for 6 months.

There are lots of threads on this - you shouldn't need to buy a new box on ebay.

Here's a small one one I just worked out for myself ;) : if you've set your set-top box to receive UK channels and are getting some but not others, consult your TV listings - certain channels only operate in the evenings etc and you might have tuned in before/after broadcasting hours.
i have ceased my subscription with sky
    what can i do now
are there any other providers out there,

Thanks for all the info lads. I was on to sky last week and asked the man in the Cork call centre lots of questions and he sussed what I was planning to do. He told me it will work for a max of 3-4 Months after which the box will no longer be able to receive a signal if the designated phone line is not connected. This is designed to stop people taking boxes to Spain etc.

    thanks for that
i wondered why we had to have phone lines attached
    now another question
can one get some other way of rigging up phone line, other than the wire going around the house if it is two rooms away from sky, it is a nusance
    help

why do you want a phone line to a sky box without a sub?

a phone line is only required for multiroom.

    Here's a great site I used to find out satellite locations without a satfinder-type tool;

Quite accurate and I get a great reception now!!:D

Sky is not required to receive the FTA overspill UK channels, a FTA or freesat satellite receiver will do also. An EU Directive allows the FTA channels to be received legally in Ireland by aerial or satellite dish. I'm not sure whether this only applies to a domestic situation or both. I assume there are lots of pubs both sides of the border receiving the other jurisdictions' channels via aerial.

Do IMRO fees cover such a situation?

i have Sky+ and want to get the Sky+HD box (since it is the standard now) , i have no multiroom, just sky on main TV.

If i rang them up and said i want to change my Sky+ box to a Sky+HD box with no HD pack, would they allow it and how much would it cost for the box?

I assume my sub would stay the same as im not taking the HD pack.

but i would get the free HD channels (BBC,ITV and Lux)

i assume also its pretty easy to set up as all the leads are there from Sky+.Would i need to ring sky and get our viewing card 'married' so to speak with the new box?

    any help would be great!

    EDIT
Spoke to Sky, 259 quid, no way jose

Hi I just have a few questions regarding satelite tv. Firstly I have the standard sky digital package, but im going to have to cancel it due to financial issues. What I want to know is:

1 What channels will I have if I cancel my sky subscription?

2 Ive heard i'll still have some free channels on sky if I cancel what channels will they be?

3 Ive hear about being able to pick up free sattelite channels by getting a satelite installed and a once off payment for instillation, but I also heard that the sattelite moves every 6 months or so and I will have to get the installer back to get it re-aligned.

    4. Is that true- needing to get it realigned? Could I do it myself with the necessary Info needed to do it?

5 . basically Im just looking for a decent channel package for free without having to go back to being stuck with the Irish channels only.

You will receive over 300 channels and there will be a couple more new ones by the middle of the month. 80% of the free channels are pure crap though. For information on installing or realigning your dish go to www.dishpointer.com and www.techtir.ie For channel line ups go to www.lyngsat.com One only needs to usually realign the skew of the lnb after stormy weather. Some unscrupulous installers under tighten the fittings on purpose in order to earn more money for extra call outs. Take out your card and switch off your box and turn it on again within a minute. Lots of other extra channels can be added in the other channels section of Sky boxes manually which aren't on the Sky epg. I have never owned a Sky box, Humax make good HD Freesat boxes which have their own epg's and allow one to record, pause and rewind and have series link. :)

100% agree, all BBC, ITV and Channel 4, E4, More4, lots of music channels etc.
Adding channels manually to Sky box is easy via "Services" button.

The Channel codes are listed on this Sticky on main forum
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055520627

Once you turn off your box, remove your Sky card and turn it back on, you'll understand what I mean. BBC will be on 101 etc so you won't have Irish channels on your Sky box.

You won't need to realign your dish or call out a Satellite Installer every six months. If channels move, which happens occassionally, then you can get the new codes here on Boards.ie and input them yourself.

Sky tried to charge me something ridiculous as well when i first enquired about changing to HD. (I wasn't even on SKY+, still on the old system)

I left it about 2 weeks then called up the cancellation department. Lo and behold I ended up getting full installation for nothing and 6 months free HD pack.

I used the old "I'm moving to Freesat cos you won't give me a good deal" but as long as the threat to cancel is there they'll nearly always offer some incentive to stay

I seem to recall reading that you could configure a Sky box EPG to display only the Favourites and no other channels (ie. channels you don't have access to). Can anyone confirm/deny and if possible show me how please?

It's a Sky+HD I have and just want to display only the UK free channels, BBC,Ch4, ITV etc.

Nope I was wrong. What I was thinking of was the Favourites bar in the TV Guide...

Is there any connections that I can get (not multiroom) which will allow me to connect the sky tv from the living room to the bedroom.
Even if i have to change the channels in the living room, all i need is a cable which will allow me to watch it upstairs??

    thank you

There should be 2 rf out connections on your sky box. Get whatever length of cable you need to run a line from said connection to your bedroom and bobs your uncle.
You will of course be restricted to watching whatever channel you're viewing in the living room though.

Yep. You can even get a little gadget that will allow you to change the channels on the box from the 2nd room. Should be able to get it in any TV/electronics shop or even dinky hardware shops.

    This is it:

You might be able to buy it alone or you might have to buy it with a remote. There is some fiddling around the settings to use this tihng but ain't very difficult.

How much does the sky bonus pack cost, the basic pack without any extras?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭norbert64

Regarding PPV channels like Setanta, ESPN, MUTV etc
Do you actually need an active sky sub to run them, or can you just sign up with Setanta themselves and they'll issue you with there own card to activate the channel?

Or does it depend on the channel concerned.

I have a question, I got a new HD ready tv that supports mpeg4. I have it plugged into a typical non amplified rabbit ears on the top floor of a building in Dublin city. The auto store finds 7 digital channels but the signal strength varies from 45->0 so the channels are unwatchable.

Any recommendation on how I can get these digital channels properly?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Roof aerial or different indoor aerial
    http://www.techtir.ie/radio-tv/uhf-aerials

Most "rabbit's ears" are for VHF, not UHF. The amplified indoor aerials are waste of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,684 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

I will be looking at getting a Satellite PVR. Most possibly getting a freesat hd+ machine. Currently have one coax cable going to roof.

Is there a switch or such device that I can take two cables from the dish, convert into one cable, and then divide into 2 again to connect to the tuners of the STB?

    Thanks.

    -. . ...- . .-. / --. --- -. -. .- / --. .. ...- . / -.-- --- ..- / ..- .--.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    There is Stacker / Destacker

Not recommended. Better to run another cable. It can go round the outside.

Run two more to other rooms while you are at it and all four LNB cables via attic so option to add a multiswitch indoors any time later.

    Hi folks,

I currently have Sky+ in one room.

I have been offered a spare Sky box from a mate.
Is it possible to set up this spare box in another room to receive the fta channels only, off the current setup?
Is it possible to watch fta channels in one room & watch a non-fta channel in the other room at the same time?

    Thanks.

Basically you need 2 cables coming from the dish to the sky+ box and then you will need a third cable to run from the dish to the spare box in order to watch free/subbed channels on 2 separate TVs.

Assuming its just a basic LNB you have on the dish you can either change it to a quad LNB capable of running 4 cables from it or simply split the signal to the sky+ box which will only allow you to view the same channels on both sets.

Thanks muffler. I don't know what LNB is on the dish, but I'd assume it's standard.
Is it straight forward enough to change the LNB?

Its the little round black thing that you will see on the arm that projects out from the dish. If you have the sky+ in at the moment then you should see 2 cables coming from it.

Trust me Im no expert on these things and I would just about know the basics from looking at my own setup and from posting here on occasions. Id imagine its a fairly straight forward procedure to change the LNB. The hardest part may just be getting the third cable fed through to the room where you propose to have the standard box.

I picked one of these bad boys up today and currently have the program that's on downstairs, showing upstairs :D
Where I'm going wrong is in changing the channel. There is no light on on the wee 'adaptor/box' thing in the image above, should there be?? Where have I went wrong with regards to changing the channel upstairs??

I don't know if this part makes a difference now that I can actually see a program, although still can't change upstairs. The instructions say about finding RF OUTLETS on the sky + hd box, but when i go to sky + setup (services > setup) then press 0, then 1, it takes me to picture; but no option (as it says on instrucions) to highlight RF OUTPUT POWER SUPPLY, and then turn it ON. The only option it gives on there is to change picture size, 16:9, 4:3 or 4:3l.
    This is the instruction manual

Im no expert but it looks as if you have only one active cable fro the dish. Check that both cables are in the back of the box.

Check the input via the menu on the TV remote and ensure its not set at "TV" - should be AV1 or the likes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Freeview no, Freesat/FTA yes. BBC1HD, BBCHD at least also work.

No recording or pause Live TV, so you can set it up to in menu to use only one Coax feed. No point in two feeds to it without a sub.

Thanks watty. Would you recommend going with a specific fta receiver or with the sky box? See ad in my sig, its a swap deal so no impact cost wise. I would prefer having a customisable epg, i.e. only the channels i want / have access to.

I have a sky+hd box. I can receive all the channels to which I have subscribed to, but tonight I do not know why but I cannot view Channel 4?!

I have looked at channel 4+1 and there is a programme on and for some reason the movie after it, is not available to viewers in ROI, like its not something I haven't seen before but what's weird is both programmes before and after are viewable. I just don't understand why?

When I used to have cable TV, I had no problem with it. So this makes no sense.

Can anyone clarify as to why this has happened?

    Thanks :)

    hi quick question.

I'm moving from Galway to Donegal and have my sky+ subscription until November. Can I move everything up with no hasle and set the dish up myself with dishpointer.com or will I have to contact sky to send out a technician to take down my dish and another one to set it up in Donegal. Also will this cost

Or am I just better of cancelling my subscription

You just need to inform them I believe. Fill in a few forms, put things down in writing.

    It's UPC now,not NTL.

Best option is get broadband from UPC and your TV from Sky,it actually works out cheaper plus Sky's tv offering is way better than UPC.
Check out fatcheese for offers regarding Sky-you get enough money back to cover about 9 months subscription.:)

Or go for Freesat. It is FREE, you only pay for the equipment. You will need to be able to get Saorview as well, which is also FREE.

(You still need a TV licence, but you need that anyway).:)
