What's happening on campus?

It depends on which one it is. The theology ball is organised by the SU's St. Pat's rep. The Irish and Law balls are usually organised by the respective societies. The Science ball was organised by the Clubs and/or Socs officers for the last few years, but they happened to be science students themselves as well.

I don't think there's an economics ball, but you'd have to check with MEFsoc (Maynooth economics and finance -if they still exist) they might hold one...

Political Debate

This will be a political debate with representatives from each of the main political parties in the country. Students will be given the opportunity to voice their opinions and ask relevant questions, that they feel affect them. Also, if there are any specific questions you would like asked, please feel free to post or send them as a message to communications@nuimsu.com at the society and we will do our best to ensure they get asked and answered.

So when is Raise and Give/Charity week this year and anything confirmed for it yet? I heard that the Gathering is a seperate event at the end of April now. Is this true?

I dunno about raise and give week, but the diaries we got at orientation this year said the Gathering was the 29th of April.

What is The Gathering anyway, do we have to go and do we have to pay for it

The Gathering is a mini-festival thing. Tickets were 35 euro last year iirc. You don't have to go, its just something the SU puts on.

Also there's a 3rd year English exam that day, so I'll defo not be going :P

Not technically on campus, but I hope nobody minds too much if I point out that there's a blood donation clinic on in the Glenroyal today (bit late, I know!) and tomorrow from 5pm-8:30pm, if anyone is interested in donating.

ELECTION 2011 - All you Need to Know
A one hour discussion session devoted to the upcoming general election. Amongst the issues to be considered will be the nature and ideosyncracies of Ireland's PR-STV voting system; the battles being waged in close-fought constituencies; what campaigning has been like in the election, and the challenges facing a new administration. All are welcome.

French Society have begun a "Club Francophone" - 2 hours a week of French speaking for anyone who wants to practice their French with others. Also, we are having a French debate against Trinity next month, hope to beat them in their backyard.

The talk is titled Socialism and the fight for Womens' Liberation in the 21st Century. The Socialist Workers Student Society are having their first meeting of the year tomorrow, Thursday at 5pm in Meeting Room 2 in the Students Room. The title of the talk is Marx and the Alternative to Capitalism. Keiran Allen from UCD's sociology department has written a book with that title and will be speaking about the book and socialism in general and what we do as a society.

Anyone who has an interest in left-wing politics, socialism or political activism should come along, we'll also head in for a few beers in the SU afterward and it'll be a bit of craic!

Free Education for Everyone (FEE) NUIM will hold its first meeting of the new semester tomorrow at 1pm in the SU. Up for discussion will be last week's petition campaign and the USI student march in November. All are welcome, anyone believes that education is a right and not a privilege is free to affiliate to FEE.

The UGM to debate the Class Rep training weekend will take place tomorrow at 6pm in Iontas. The meeting will not reach quorum but FEE would encourage everyone interested in debating the issue to attend as an informal meeting can take place instead.

Free Education for Everyone NUIM holds its first public meeting of the semester, Wednesday, 1pm, SU Meeting Room 3-4, to discuss the forthcoming USI march in November. FEE will discuss how we can get students to mobilise for the march and what role FEE could play in the march itself.

We will also discuss what FEE is and what role we hope to play in the fight against fees and education cuts for the forthcoming year.

Everyone is welcome along, to affiliate to FEE a student must only be opposed to fees and believe that education is a right and not a privilege.
