    This does two things.

    1. It makes me very jealous

and 2. Reminds me I need to buy a couple of nice bottles of whiskey for the coming months.

I just ran out of Bushmills 10year old. Booooooooo

Aye this wasn't intended to get people jealous at all. Plenty on here have nicer whiskeys on their shelves at home than I do. I'm relatively new to this game (4 - 5 years). It's just a quick reminder to people that Christmas is quickly upon us, and if you're like me you'll want to get yours before places run out.

It's a ritual for me, I always get myself something nice for Christmas, and the past four years it has been whiskey.

I can see myself making another purchase closer to the time to be honest. One of those Green Spots doesn't have much left in it.

Perhaps we should have a Christmas whiskey thread? :)

It's something I do as part of the overall Xmas drinks run. Some good beers and whiskey.

I have a bottle of Middleton but you need the inbetween whiskey too.

What would people say is a good price for Green Spot? I've seen it at €55, €58 and €60 in different shops, but can it be got cheaper?

I've not found it as cheap as €55 lately, seems like a good price.

55 for green spot? Brilliant. Has anyone tried yellow spot yet? Seriously thinking of dropping some cash for it

    Beautiful whiskey.

I tried it before and didn't like it however I've since tried it again and I loved it, totally different to the first time, I'm pretty sure now the first time I had it, a random whiskey was poured into a bottle to pass it off as yellow spot.
It's definitely worth getting if you fancy it.

At the complete other end of the scale has anyone been drinking the Highland Black Whiskey from Aldi?
I love it, fantastic value for a very nice whiskey imo. No brainer at under €20 a bottle.

Think I will try the new Teelings Single Malt as my Christmas Whiskey this year, I'll be in France so I'll get a chance to pick up a couple of bottles of Scotch at reasonable prices as well!

You can get Powers Johns lane edition usually a lot cheaper than yellow spot which have very similar taste profiles. IMO

Had a taste of the Jameson aged in Franciscan Well stout barrels last night. Probably one of the nicest smelling whiskeys I've ever had, lovely stuff altogether. There's a very limited supply in Ireland; Celtic Whiskey Store getting 12 bottles, Redmonds getting 24 with the the bulk of it going to duty free stores and the US.

Yes. Suggestions on some UK forums that it may be a Glenmorangie product, going on the postcode on the earlier bottles of it produced. Very good for the price, its become one of my regular bottles here.

I got Greenspot in Fort Collins Colorado for $45 last week, at a liquor store my daughter describes as expensive!

I'm glad I live in the States and can try Irish whiskey for less than it can be had in Ireland!

It can be had for just under $60.

The 21 year old is 220 USD where I am, but I've seen it for as low as 180 in some places.

Bought my first whiskey this year (Jameson 12 year old special reserve). Haven't had a chance to taste it yet (saving it for the right time) but I have heard good things.

I'm a newbie to this and was wondering of a nice whiskey to get that's around the €30 euro mark? Best off going to lidl or aldi for a nice one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,822 ✭✭✭Morf

My local O'Briens has substantially added to their whiskey selection with green spot, yellow spot, writers tears, redbreast 21 and several others.

Seems to be a good sign for Irish whiskey if they're stocking them even at the very very premium (still less than Japan I Imagine) Irish prices.

bought her dad a bottle of Teelings Whiskey Small Batch recently.
was really nice - got it for 38e.

otherwise my non special whiskey (ie regualr whiskey) is black bush - usually about 29 - 34e despends on where you go.
Oddly I got it in a petrol station for 28 once.

Tempted to pick this one up myself...Aldi's drinks range can be quite tasty.

There are a couple of different varieties of the Clontarf range available...check the in-store leaflet if you get a chance.

Will be pickin up a bottle of this and a bottle of Bushmills 10year old in the coming weeks.

I'm a big fan of the bushmills 10year old so it'll be interesting to see how they compare.

Picked up a couple of bottles of Teelings Single Malt on Sunday in the Celticwhiskey Shop. One for me and the other for the Father in Law for Christmas. It's a lovely dram but hard to get. That was my second visit to the shop to try and get it and I walked away with the last couple of bottles. The lad that served me said they were walking out the door! Great to see a new Irish brand doing so well.

If you're flying anywhere, it's probably still on special in Dublin Airport duty free. I regret getting the standard Teeling over the Single Grain. It's much, much better.

Anyone spot the single grain Teeling around Cork?

How is the Redbreast 21? Had a bottle of the 15 and found it a bit musky tasting. Got a bottle of Yellow Spot last week as a gift and it is quite a good whiskey but I would prefer Bushmills 16 yo or John's Lane for similar money.
Actually the Bushmills is my whiskey of the year this year.

Teelings Small Batch is lovely too and quite complex for a young whiskey. 46% is perfect too for this.

Thinking about splashing out on a Redbreast 21. What price now?

You can still get it for 24.99 the odd time - O'Briens mostly. Often cheaper than "normal"/"white" Bushmills in the same shop which I find quite odd (ignoring that its 19.99 in Lidl all the time now!)

The Redbreast 21 is amazing. I got it for 219 USD so no idea how much it is back home in Ireland.

It's extremely complex, probably my favourite. I'd put it ahead of Midleton.

€190 in Celtic. Considering €65 is the most I've ever spent on a bottle (combined housewarming and Christmas present for a good friend) I'm not sure I'll be stretching to that even for my present-to-myself for Christmas this year!

Looking at getting a similar (to the €65) cost bottle of something for the house for Christmas though if anyone has any suggestions though. Talisker 10 would be my "normal" dear bottle to keep around, but there's an unopened bottle from when it was last on offer in Tesco here.

kinda off topic but livingsocial had an offer of a scotch tasting pack from flaviar.com for 10e a while back.
Bought 2 - 1 for me and 1 for her dad.

Finally arrived - took weeks

    45ml bottles of

    Auchentoshan 12
    Laphroaig Quarter Cask
    Lagavulin 16 Year Old
Singleton of Dufftown 15 Year Old
    The Glenlivet 18 Year Old

they sell it for 34e on their site for a tenner can't go wrong.
i'll launch into this at the weekend.

Have only tasted the Auchentoshan before which was nice

Decided that this Christmas I'm treating myself to a nice whiskey. I've never drank much of the stuff, being a Guinness/red wine drinker, but like the idea of coming in from a swim, fire lighting and pouring a nice whiskey. I haven't tried much so don't even know what my preferences are. Thinking of going for a bottle of Talisker 10 to pop my cherry :p

Has anyone tried the Paddy Centenary yet? Might pick one up when I get my Christmas bonus if it gets any recommendations on here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,154 ✭✭✭Flex

Ive had Redbreast 21YO and thought it was excellent, really great stuff.

Ive a bottle of Jameson 18 YO and Gold Reserve for myself and my dad. Have had 18 YO before and thought it was amazing, but never really had Gold Reserve, so looking forward to trying both. Wouldn't mind getting a Scotch too to have...

Has anyone tried Midleton Barry Crockett?

Quoite sweet with a lot of vanilla.
It's not hugely unlike Middleton but around twice the price.

I'll second the support for Talisker - particularly if you're not a current whiskey/scotch drinker. Has the mix of the taste and the smoke.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

Talisker is a lovely whisky but I would recommend you buy an Irish if possible!
We really have fantastic exciting whiskeys on this island that are as good as if not better than Scotch.

Talisker is €45-€50 but I would stretch it another tenner or so and buy a really fantastic Irish like Powers Johns Lane or a Redbreast 12.

Even a Lockes 8 year old is alot cheaper and a great little whiskey also Writers' Tears which just crackles with pot still. Greenore 8yo grain Whiskey is also a good experience at around €40.

Other brilliant but more expensive whiskeys are Tyrconnell Madeira Cask, Bushmills 16 year old and Yellow Spot all around the €75

I tried a few on the weekend actually. I enjoyed the Bushmills 16, Redbreast, Green Spot. I also enjoyed a Macallan. I tried a Laphroaig which was such an unexpected taste I didn't know what to make of it. I think I would enjoy peatyness, just a bit less!

Also, just FYI you can get a bottle of Talisker 10 on Amazon for €35 now
