Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does a sprinter feel guilty when they grab the finish after hanging out of the back of someone who's been doing the hard work out front?

And so the attempt to get the elusive last post....

The Mio Alpha heart rate monitor describes itself as "the world's first strapless, continuous heart rate sport watch accurate at performance speeds!". Basically it doesn't require that you wear a heart monitor strap, it measures your heart rate directly at the wrist.

That makes me feel a little nostalgic. Back in 1992 I knew a guy who was working on a heart rate monitor built into a watch, which measured at the wrist too, and he had a working prototype at the time. Admittedly he used different technology to measure the heart rate (can't remember what he told me about how it worked at the time though), and his watch had wires connecting it to a computer so mobility was, er, impaired, and I'm not sure how consistently accurate his version was, but I'm surprised that it has taken this long for a strapless HRM watch to be produced commercially.

I wonder what demand for it will be like though? I must admit my HRM strap gets annoying if it moves a little while wearing it but mostly I'm not conscious of wearing it at all so I'm not motivated to find an alternative HRM whose main selling point is that it doesn't require a strap. Running with a strap might be more problematic though I guess so maybe it'll appeal strongly to runners.

i run with my strap on (muhahahaha) and have to say i notice it about as much as i notice the strap on (muhahahahaha) the bike, which is not at all.

I dont think i would rush out to buy this because it doesnt have a strap, but maybe when i need to replace my strap or HRM id consider it.

So, it looks like the winter is here. Cold clear morning, long sleeves, bib tights, softshell jacket and full finger gloves.

As long as it doesn't rain, bring on the cold, it felt very refreshing on the morning commute.

Happens alot with videos and computer games as well, seller doesn't realise/care that there is a release date. Publisher might kick up a stink as if negative press came out before the first day of sales it could affect them.
Go on, throw up a review.

I use an Aldi motorbike balaclava that I bought a few years ago for €8. The mouth bit does get a bit wet from breathing though, but overall it's great in winter.

Yeah North Face is steep alright (pun intended)!

Do you use it for your daily commute or longer spins? Or both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,011 ✭✭✭✭Wishbone Ash

I tried one once on a very cold/frosty morning. It was way too warm and I ended up discarding it a few kms into a spin.

Yeah. Had the same experience myself one evening. I'd wear a hat under the helmet but wouldn't go full balaclava.

On another note, who's gonna be the final post in the Camper Van??

I tend to get ear aches once it gets cold so I use it all the time for spins when it gets nippy. Sadly my commute is four wheel related these days but I used to use it every day.

Ebay have loads for cheap if you want to try it out sure: http://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_odkw=craft+motorbike+balaclava&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=motorbike+balaclava&_sacat=0

That's a good time. I've started running these last two weeks for pretty much the first time ever (seriously, ever) and so far I can only do 5k in just over 30 mins.
