Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

:) A hole shot is when you are taking off from standing still it's handy for getting a skier up on the water quick instead of pulling through the water and ripping their arms off. I already have an adopted 20 year old girl although she was 3 months old when I adopted her now she is in collage and using up all my boating funds :( so thanks but no thanks :D

    .

If you change your mind let me know. I come with a nice wife and 3 ready made, well behaved (mostly) grand kids for ya ;)

My Sims Super V is in ****E. Left it in a 20' container in a mates yard for storage. Turns out it was removed from the container last year at some stage, dragged across a yard (so the tyres, which were flat, came off the trailer). Somebody saw fit to throw metal poles into the boat (on top of the cover). The poles shredded the cover and the boat filled with rain/snow/sleet, maybe even piss. It sat there, like that for AGES. The brand new battery was completely submerged, along with the fuel tank etc.
All they had to do was open the plugs (bungs, is it..?) in the transom and it would have been grand. Head melted!!

That's why watching you work your magic on this boat gives me hope and inspiration for my own :)

Thinking of picking up another boat, just the boat, and transferring everything from my one onto the "new" one. There was a Sims Super V on Donedeal a while back for €300.00. It was up for ages. I've contacted Donedeal and they have forwarded my details to the seller so hopefully I get a result there. Like I said, the one I have is in ribbons. When I noticed that it was filled with water I levelled the boat out to get access to the battery and as the water ran to the bow it was leaking out all over the place from various cracks and previously patched up holes. Also, the supporting beams on the trailer were bunched so the boat has been leaning heavily on 2 metal posts and this has weakened the hull and caused serious dents. Not too sure it has been too compromised or is even saveable. Question is, the Tohatsu engine on the current boat is Bolted on and the bolts seem to be welded sealed. Mike Clinton reckons he may have done the job himself (prevents theft apparently). Is it a problem removing them..? Can it damage the bracket/clamp for holding the engine on the transom?

Start up a new thread and post some photos, you might be able to zap them off with a dremel.

Not much to show today just built the fuel tank and battery bays the battery is in the fuel tank bay by the way :) the bit of wood at an angle is just holding a block of wood in place till the epoxy sets I'll use it to give some extra strength to an AUX bracket.

Another crappy day so I did a bit of upholstery on the side pads and a few of the seats nothing fancy just fold and staple :) it would have been a lot of extra work for me to sew them up like the original so I just went with cheep and cheerful and they turned out fine, I might do another burgundy stripe at an angle in the side pads but I will wait till they are dry fitted so I can get the top and bottom angles to line up right.

A better day today so I got a good bit done :) the transom top is back on.

    The carpet is down.

    20150807_160117_zpstr8eoec9.jpg

I played around with making a new dash "not sure on it yet"

    20150807_160125_zpsn33duj7o.jpg

And just dry fitted the seats and the new drinks table to see what they look like I still have to do the back cushion for the table.

Cheers Guy's I'm hoping to get a wooden steering wheel to match the dash and there will be a few other bits of wood around the boat as well, I'll do one with just the red and see how it looks :)

I love the timber dash (walnut? is it off something else?) but I don't like the screwholes - could they ne filled and fix the dash from the rear? Also the switches/fuseboard is wrong there, why not drom it down to the grey box to the right of the wheel?

Yep the dash came with the gauges I got for Old's Cool, the switches have to be moved I might put them down near the control box out of sight :)

For anyone interested in boat restoration there is a new program on Animal Planet called "flipping ships" it's right up my street :)

Wonderful work Fergal. Love your build threads.

Can I ask why you used carpet? I would have thought that would be terrible in a boat?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

Thats not showing off, this is :) at the moment I am wiring up an underwater camera with 30m's of cable to a tv that will be built into the boat it will also connect to a camcorder so I can record anything interesting I come across.

Thebody the carpet is rubber backed I also drilled some drain holes in the floor to let any water out and to keep it aired, with the plywood being encapsulated in epoxy it should be fine.

Looks great... Just wondering how you did it? Presume it was sanded down, fiberglassed, gelcoated and painted? Wish I had the time and skill to do the boat!

Good luck in finding Old's Cool

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

Cheers bpmdj yep I just grind out the damaged gelcoat down to the fibreglass then build it back up with epoxy mixed with fibreglass filler "they are like tiny strands of glass that when mixed with epoxy it makes a nice paste to work with" no need for gelcoat as it's being painted so just pre-kote primer and top-lac paint.

Back together again and solid as a rock :) I'm not sure what the name on her means maybe some of you might recognise it.

I had a bit of trouble with the tilt trim pump getting hot so I stripped it down and found it was the top bearing sizing up with dirt so I cleaned it all up and it seems fine now, it wasn't fun trying to get the brushes back on to the commutator on the armature I could have done with a 4 year olds fingers.:)

Everyone knows that renaming your boat will bring nothing but bad luck and make your boating experience something that you will want to forget. But what happens when, after months of searching, you find your dreamboat with a name that you just cannot live with. Since the beginning of time, sailors have sworn that there are unlucky ships and the unluckiest ships of all, are those who have defied the gods and changed their names. So, is there a way to change a name and not incur the wrath of those deities that rule the elements? Yes, there is and this is how:

Before taking your new boat out for her maiden voyage, you must have a "christening ceremony." A proper christening and the accompanying ceremony ensures good fortune to the boat and her crew throughout the life of the vessel. If, after being properly christened, a vessel does have a run of bad luck, it will be because her christening ceremony was poorly performed, rather than due to her Captain's incompetence or to sea monsters.. So for you new boat owners, don't tempt fate.
Perform the ceremony below before taking your vessel out for her maiden voyage.

First of all, make certain that you invite everyone to the christening who is important to the boat. Since this is an auspicious occasion, it is a good time to invite your friends to witness and to party. Distribute champagne to all attendees. Then, recite the following:

"For thousands of years, we have gone to sea. We have crafted vessels to carry us and we have called them by name. These ships will nurture and care for us through perilous seas, and so we affectionately call them "she." To them we toast, and ask to celebrate (the name of your boat)." Then everybody raises their chanmpagne glasses and shouts "TO THE SAILORS OF OLD…TO_________ (the name of your boat)."

    Everybody takes a sip.

Then follow with: "The moods of the sea are many, from tranquil to violent. We ask that this ship be given the strength to carry on. The keel is strong and she keeps out the pressures of the sea." Again the glasses are raised, and the assemblage shouts, "TO THE SEA...TO THE SAILORS OF OLD...TO THE SEA!"

    Everybody takes another sip.

Continue:"Today we come to name this lady_____________ (name of your boat), and send her to sea to be cared for, and to care for the __________ (name of your family) family. We ask the sailors of old and the mood of God that is the sea to accept ________________ (your boat's name) as her name, to help her through her passages, and allow her to return with her crew safely. " Again, with the raising of the glasses, "TO THE SEA...TO THE SAILORS BEFORE US...TO_________(the name of your boat)."

A last, long sip by all.

Now pour champagne over the bow to appease King Neptune, and lay a branch of green leaves on the deck to ensure safe returns. (This is when you break the bottle accross the bow. Buy at the follwing link Christening Bottle )

Of course, any champagne remaining will be the beginnings of a suitable celebration in honor of the occasion.

Once the ceremony has been completed, you may bring aboard any and all items bearing the new name of your vessel. If you must apply the new name before the ceremony, be sure the name is not revealed before the ceremony is finished. It may be covered with bunting or some other suitable material.

I heard you had to walk around it three times (when it's on the water) and put a coin under the mast when re-stepping it, though a mast would ruin the lines.

No,nonononononono. Bunting, forsooth! It's not a jubilee or some monarchs birthday! That is some Established Church mumbojumbo or Jesuitical stuff for naming a NEW boat, not one that has been lovingly restored.. You need the re-naming one, with the anchor being passed over and under the keel. I'll have to dig it out......

Well thats taken care of the name out of sight out of mind :) I had to make up some wedges to bring the AUX bracket out to about 12 degrees I also had to rise up a bit more than I liked to allow the motor to lock when tilted up also normally I would put the AUX on the other side to counter balance the drivers weight but as there is a swim ladder on the other side it would have left me with 8 more holes to fill.
